I'm looking to add a side shelf to my cart with top lid. If you have a side shelf for your box or cart, I'd love to see some photos. If you could list the manufacturer and model number if you have it, that would even be more helpful. I've seen them in various threads but having 1 thread to consolidate might be helpful for others as well.

Here is a red Craftsman side shelf that hangs off the lip of your box. Don't know if this would work with a cart with top lid though.

I'm a huge fan of this type of setup. That said those craftsman shelves are a pretty good deal. However if you look long and hard you can find the Snap on ones on ebay for about the same price shipped (recently purchased two) the SO shelves retail for 150$ and are a couple inches larger in all directions and quite a bit more substantial. I think if the lid on your cart will close over the shelf you'll be good to go.

I bought a pair of Husky folding shelves at Home Depot for my 1970's Beach roller cabinet. I removed the cabinet handles and they bolted on without any modifications to the box or shelves. The cost was about $35 each and the quality is good.

HF does not have one that I could find online. I purchased the 5 Drawer Cart yesterday and plan on installing a side shelf. So far I'm considering the Sunex Tools one listed in this thread.

http://www.tooltopia.com/sunex-tools-8004.aspx

I am making several changes to the HF cart.

1. Removing front lip of bottom shelf to make access easier.
2. Removing drawer lock/lid down system.
3. Enclosing upper sides with 12ga sheet metal painted to match (I don't like seeing the black rivets and my screw driver/prybar shafts hanging down)
4. Addition of side shelf
5. Addition of "something" on the back to cover the 8 holes where the rivets were removed for #2 above.

I am seriously reinforcing the front lip on that bottom shelf by the way. I took a 1 1/2 flat stock that I milled matching caster slot holes and used a series of 3/16 inch rivets down thru this and the shelf. Along with fender washers to support the rivets.

Also covering the bottom shelf with thick front door welcome mat.

After surfing the web a bit... I found "Hoffman ACSHELF18 Folding Shelf" that is 18 x 18 and can hold over 100lb. It's white so it will need a paintjob but I got it for $55 shipped.

Will update after I get it setup on my HF 5 Drawer.

Update 5/4/2014...
The reason I went with this folding side shelf... Most side shelves have the lip on the top that hook to your cabinet or cart. This folding shelf requires to perm attachment and can be attached lower on the side, which is what I wanted.

The older Craftsman steel side shelves are great. I have two and they are nice and stable. Too bad their no longer available. Their new plastic one looks like pure junk. I have never knocked one of the shelves off of the side of the box but it could happen I suppose. They pop up on eBay from time to time.
