Opinion on new Snap on Box...

I was discussing picking up a new Snap on KRL 722 (w/stainless top) with my dealer the other day, I would be consolidating down from a Snap On KRSC 31 and a Craftsman Roll Cab... I've know him a while and he said he would sharpen the pencil best he could for me...

He basically offered it to me 15% off MSRP and in addition would give me full retail for a trade in on my KRSC 31 (Which I bought from him a year ago for MSRP)... Wanted to get some feed back on what other comparable deals other GJ members have seen out there. Thanks in advance for any input...

The top better be free. A cover or a jacket should come with the deal too. He better be giving you the best intrest rate if your making payments. The SO box you are trading in is a actually a cart, right? Keep the cart. You will sooner or later want a cart again. Also is this a box he has, or has to order. When it comes to new boxes, the ones sitting in the dealer's garage are the best price. What Back to Class is saying is new boxes will always drop a lot of value and used boxes can be a steal The 722 is very populat and a lot of guys out grow it in a few years. Watch ebay and craigslist, one in your area may come up, or better yet a bigger 1022 or 1032 may come a long cheaper than that new 722. My not saying never buy a new box, all three of mine came off the truck.

You realize used snap on boxes typicaly sell for 30% of MSRP in average used shape and like new used ones have a resale value of 40-50% of msrp. It is crazy to be buying new boxes every year. It is throwing away thousands of dollars, so with that name I had to tease you. Welcome abord.

Good points for sure, but for some people (i'm not one of them) buying a new box is like buying a new car. There is a satisfaction that is gained by purchasing it new (even though the economics of it are not optimal).

Calculate the payments with your dealer and then tell him "no thanks" take that payment amount and stash it away each week. Within one year you will be able to pay cash for a larger used box. If you need storage right now find a craigslist deal and make it work.

Basically its about $6200 (KRL722 w Stainless top) - $930 (15%), then he'll give me an additional $850 for my cart which is basically like new... so the actual cost to me is $4420... I've been looking around a bit after you guys were so adamant about the used stuff and I've seen some CL deals in about the 2-3K range, but without the stainless top... and some were pretty beat up...

I'm in southern, CA if that matters, things might be more in demand around here... who knows... I may wait it out a bit longer... One just popped up on ebay...

What type of discount constitutes a good deal, 20%, 25%, 30% off MSRP?

I bought a $15,000 SO Combo for $5000. It had never had a wrench in it, brand spanking NEW! If you have Cash, my Feelings are that you should be treated by a Physician if you are thinking of giving it to the Snapon man. You can get 3x your Cash Horsepower on Ebay or Craigs list.

The box I bought was $300 miles away round trip, the seller delivered it into my Garage for free. Got it off Ebay, even came with a roll around SO cart.

I just watched Ebay and took my time. If you have cash, you can take a month or two and watch Ebay everyday till you find the Box in the Color you want for the price you want to pay.

You could finance it thru Snap-on credit and qualify for an additional $300 instant rebate and then pay it off within the 90 days same as cash period and not pay any interest.

are the US General boxes nice? I have a Snap ON box and a Matco box at home, as well as a Kobalt and had a craftsman I gave to my father in law. the Matco and snap on boxes are way nicer than the cheaper stuff. my shop supplies me with a Shure box.

They are worth 7 times more, at least to me. There is a HUGE difference between a KRL and those HF boxes. That is an HF box, correct? Maybe it's not...

The real point is that with some looking around, he may get into the $1500-$3000 range.

Carl, when do you ever see that box for $639? $639 seems like $799 with 20% off, but HF does not allow you to use the 20% coupons anymore on boxes.

Not trying to call you out, but rather to understand if these things are ever really available for less than $799. If so, I will buy one at the next sale! Hell, I may buy one anyway!

Sheet metal thickness?
Slides as good?
Does it have a lifetime warranty?
Is the paint powder coated? Is the resell value as good?
Is it made in the USA?

Then see why it's 7X cheaper...

Looked at it last weekend in our local HF Store here in Clearwater, Fl. We were discussing the HF vs SO box in another thread - so I stopped just to look the US General box over very very closely to compare with my Snap-On box.

They had it marked in the Store at $639.99. Didn't ask at the time if that was the price for the display.. or just an in-store sale price.

The snap on guy just sold me a krl1023 with stainless top even threw in a extra long dual 80 ratchet for 4k including my old box.

I think it all depends on where you live. Around my area, snappy krl's go for top dollar. Even used ones. I think bottom line is that you have to do your research to see what comparable boxes go for in your area. Somebody else 5000 miles away may think it's expensive but that's irrelevant unless you're willing to buy and ship across the continent.

I am in SoCal. There are ALWAYS Snap-On boxes for sale. Some rough, some like new, all well below retail. I like new stuff as much as the next guy, but that depreciation is just too brutal.

In this thread there have been comparisons of quality. There have been some on price. To stay on topic 15% off is nonsense. If you must have NEW, maybe that is some sort of a deal. Buy used (all over the internet, here even) for 50% off or MORE.

The comparison on quality: I break down like this. SO may be better quality than HF, but it's not by much to ME. I'm not an aircraft mechanic. I do NOT assemble rockets. I tear **** apart and sometimes it goes back together, other times not so much.

Some toilet paper (TP) is like wood. I dont buy it. Some is like silk. I can't afford it. Some is like cotton and does the job. I can afford to double up from time to time, when necessary. Having TP encrusted with diamonds would be nice to show my friends, but would I really want to PAY for that? Again, I'm not knocking the QUALITY of any truck brand only talking pure **** about the retail price. There is a difference. I'd be proud to have a SO, but I have 4 MACS that I got used. They all cost less than 1 SO roll cart (not box, roll cart- yes, the cheap ones). Mine are bigger, better and badder and cost less, but they are not NEW and I didnt get a free ratchet. I bought most of my ratchets here, again at 30% of retail or LESS. I did buy a roll cart (black) from HF with a $99 coupon form the dentist. It has yet to fall apart or prevent me from doing any work. It has yet to make me any money either. Glad it was just $99. It is of comparable quality to a SO one for $800. Stickers are $5 all over FleaBay. Havent wasted the money yet, but I will eventually. I'd skip the ssteel top for the $ and have one bent up in sheet aluminum, like a guy here did his entire shop, for less than the cost of 1 SO ss top! That's just me. Alot of people are out of jobs and losing their assets. I still have high speed internet so I'm OK, but some things are just a waste of money. Just because it is for sale does not make it valuable. <-- Life Lesson!

Where I live, I see alot of Exkalades parked outside of trailers. Something is unbalanced in those households and I dont need to go inside to see it. If the box were 'paying for itself' then it would be an asset, but MOST are not doing any such thing. To each their own though. I'd like an escalade, but I got a diesel and a car hauler I can tow one with for $ if an escalade should ever break down.

I love these sorts of threads! Ideas all over the place with little support / advice for the original question. Comparisons of quality and what great used deals are out there -- in the right places.....if you have cash....
The only part of all of that I tend to agree with is that I would NOT advise people who don't wrench for a living to put out that kind of cash for brand new SO stuff just for decorating the garage at home.....

Now, in regards to the original post, my advice is this: For 15 years I've been wrenching / buying truck brand tools, I allways got about the same sort of deal your looking at - sometimes a little better (throw in a cover maybe or a free something like drawer dividers / wrench racks, etc) - when I bought a new box (only about 4 or 5 times - only bought another when the old one was full). So I would not say that's a bad deal. Brand new - straight off the freight truck, still in package, delivered to your shop. He's giving you full price on the trade and a decent discount. I don't know exactly what his percentage is, but most business is only around 20 - 25 %, so I'd guess the guy is planning to still make 10%. And, he'll likely loose money on the trade. You ultimately have to decide what it's worth to you, and set the deal up where you are comfortable. If there's financing involved, are you oaky with that weekly payment to the tool man? I guess my only question is if this box is on a promotial deal allready or not? If not, you might save some more by telling him that box is exactly what you want, but you will wait for the next promotional deal to come up. They do this fairly often, from my expereince. Sometimes its a particular model of box they want to get sold. Sometimes it's group deal where the SO man has to order a number of boxxes at once to get another adittional percentage (another 10 or 15%) off from corporate. I remember 2 boxxes I got this way.
