Didi anyone else ever make something like that?

Here is a posting of the 1960 Craftsman Catalog, It states in the Catalog that it is a new tool. Oddly enough, there is no mention of it in the 1964 Catalog!

HERBRAND made one Similar to it.

I have tool envy! I have only seen one in person and that was about 25 years ago; I tried to buy the ratchet on the spot buy the guy wasn't selling. I have continued searching for one ever since. I hope to one day find one that does not cost stupid money to add to my little pile. I did snag the dogbone for a few bucks some years ago; I have never put it to use though. Funny thing about the dogbone is you could catalog order them till about 10-15 years ago.

The speed wrench is totally cool, but an obvious casualty of cheap air wrenches.

No homeowner needed one and a shop needed something easier and faster.

The bent speed handle was all I ever saw anyone using prior to air impact.
Still have one of those but except for getting oil started in a rebuilt engine it hasn't been out of the drawer in 23 years.

:headscrat
I've always heard the old big ratcheting wrenches called dog bones. Even seen them sold as such.
They are dog bone shaped, big loop at each end. Like a milk bone.

Never saw that rather cool tool (1) in the picture before.

Gotcha ... I think I remember seeing one of those odd looking little rascals in my grand father's (Paw Paw) tool shed many moons ago.

Sadly, the shed was pilfered by a crack head cousin immediately after my Paw Paw's death and most everything worth a flip is now gone. I hope he enjoyed the high.

Thats the damnedest thing I've seen in awhile! Thanks for all the links, kind of a perverse comfort in knowing gimmick tools are nothing new. As an aside my Craftsman speed handles have the knobs on them as shown on the old catalog pages, not the knurled handles like the new ones.

The dog bone was offered far too many years to meet the gimmick criteria, for years that baby was a staple item in the old catalogs; not to mention other nifty offerings that have fallen by the wayside like the chain wrench, and the set of saltus wrenches (that was sears name) open end and a socket on the other end. If you still do not know what I am talking about scroll back up the page and look at BWP's entry that shows item 2 next to the dog bone!

I have 2 of the 3/8 ratchets that are listed as #7 in the first catalog scan They are the last of the hand tools I have left from my grandfather I am assuming that he bought them about the same time as the Mcculloch 1-41 chain saw I still use the saw to cut firewood.

$50 is kinda steep for a oil change wrench ...

Put the words "Snap On" on it and folks would fall over themselves to pay 3-4 times that much for it. Those same folks would find their way here and then boast about what a great tool company SO is for coming up with it and they don't know how in the world they ever lived with out it. :bounce:

I got one of the c-man dog bone wrenches off of ebay last year. Haven't used it on anything though, just thought it was darn cool.

The williams looks like it's better made to me though.

I'd looked up the modern version after I bought it and thought it was too much money. But I like that it's magnetic. I always end up laying down a ratchet or wrench when I'm laying on a creeper and then have to fumble around to find it again.

Ok, now I still maintain that I am not a wrench collector;) but I could not pass up this old dog bone wrench today. I was the only bidder. 99 cents plus five bucks shipping.

You will likely do the same thing with yours as I did mine, throw it in the bottom of your box and forget to ever use it! I am still glad I bought mine though!
