Gold at the end of the rainbow... Look at what I found.
I thought I had a neat vise when I bought the Stewart Handy Worker but this new vise takes the cake. Three jaws that rotate and one of the jaws takes different attachments. And to beat all it's American made only a few miles from my home. Only cost me one C-note. It looks like a tough one.
No welds no cracks and it works just fine... The Vise also tilts and rotates.

This is my small metal bending vise that I've had for a while. I haven't really used it much yet. It's made in the USA, but that's about all I know about it. Approximately 3.5" jaws.

I have one like that somewhere without the tooling...

What a great find Jeff! That is the first swivel jaw Rock Island that I have seen so you schooled me today Mate. Very nice that it has the original jaw pin also. What is the jaw size of it? Rock Islands and women.....I have equal knowledge of both.
Craig

The jaws are 4 1/2". I didn't weigh it but I'd guesstimate 50+ pounds.

I enjoyed working on it!

Woohoo, I can finally join the club.

I've been salivating over all these amazing vises for so long, it's not even funny. I've got (soon to be had) a cheap Chiwanese vise and because of that didn't give vises much thought at all. Seeing all this amazing, vintage metal, though, really got me hooked on finding a nice, old, honest vise. I'm currently working leads on two local vises that I hope to show off early next week, but I couldn't even wait that long.

So . . . I just picked up this (1950s?) Parker 63 1/2 off of eBay. I probably paid a bit much ($40), but I don't care at this point. The vise jones was strong and I couldn't resist. Once it arrives, I'll give her a nice restoration. The red looks a bit dark compared to other pics I've seen, so I don't think the paint is original.

Anyways, here are pics from the seller, as well as a period ad that I stole from another GJ thread

The "art-deco" look. Very similar to my Prentiss of the same vintage:

DSCF6109.jpg

Which by the way is also a # 63 1/2, and was made by Parker when they took over the Prentiss line. Yours still has the hardy too - cool!

I found the Garage Journal and this thread on vises several months back. I was inspired to find myself a hunk of Iron. I realized these little jewels are in demand and the classics are scooped up and resold for gold. Well last week I scored a Parker 805. Its a beast, more than I need, and unfortunately its a fixed mount, but I plan on using her just the same.

I am curious what the original finish might have been. I think it was black, but I am not positive. Are the do's and don't of restoration posted here anywhere?

This thread has given me a vise addiction!
Picked up three more, a Reed NO 1C, a 4" Morgan marked "Star" on one side and "Aurora" on the other and a 3" Morgan marked "30" and "Chicago"

The Reed is in good physical condition, the jaws are in nice shape, important since they are not removeable.

The Morgans had a repaint by the seller and are in good shape. Note they are NOT swivel vises, have 3 mounting holes each.

Paid a Franklin for all three, not bad.

when was the reed no.1c made what years

I finished a quick restoration of the Wilton 450S I got for $100, except for polishing the new paint off of the moving jaw. Stripped, primed, painted and lacquered. EEZOX on the bare metal surfaces. It works perfectly, just had some surface rust and slightly bent lockdown bars (which I don't mind since they still slide through the collar nuts just fine).

Before:

After:

Now I get to mount and it and proceed to beat up the new finish until the next time.

erm.... why paint on only the dynamic jaw ends & not the static?

I just haven't gotten to polishing the new paint off the ends of the dynamic jaw. 60 seconds with a scotch-brite pad on the die grinder and a coat of EEZOX and she'll be done. Mom wanted pictures, so I stopped to take some and send 'em to her (and post 'em here).

Great looking bunch of vises lately! I haven't been able to keep up on my daily thread "fix" so I am way behind. Love the Wiltons....want to steal the little Prentiss cutie vise....amazed by the Emerett.....jealous of the C3 Wilton find.....and the list goes on and on. Keep finding them and saving them! Meanwhile.....back to the monster Prentiss project.....wait....I've said too much! Prank call....prank call

Went a little nuts on the vise thing. Aside from the Parker 63 1/2 I posted seller's pics for a few posts up, I picked up a second one for $10 (no swivel base, so I'm calling it a parts vise or a back up) . . . and, erm, a 3.5" jaw Craftsman from 1947-1958 (that's when it shows up in the catalogs, but I'm not sure specifically what year it is) and a Made in Japan Sears 3 1/2 that I'm guessing is from the '70s or so (?). And I'm going to pick up two (final, I hope) more vises tomorrow. My wife is going to blow a gasket. I'm going to need to hide these around the garage. She can't see them all together--no way to explain that :shocking: If they're all spread out, I can keep telling her she's seeing the same one if she asks about it.

Will post up a family portrait when they're all here and possibly some before/after shots if I ever get around to restoring them all.

I so need to stop following this thread!

NAH! Don't do that, just go to her closet and see how many pair's of shoes she has! Than build a closet in your garage just for vise storage-you can always change your last name to Mr. Marcos of the vise!!:lol_hitti

Not a bad idea  Sadly, I don't think wives think along those lines. Shoes (including 10 pairs of basically identical black ones) are "necessities." Or something :D

Okay, so I went a little nuts. Over the last week or so, I've picked up six new vises. From having one Chiwanese vise for the last few years, this was kind of an unexpected (but fun!) binge. They're all relatively small, but I'm only using them in the garage, so that's fine. They all need a good cleaning and restoration, but that'll give me something to do when it's too hot to go outside.

What I've got is the following:

  • Parker 63 1/2
  • Parker 63 1/2 (missing swivel base)
  • 3.5" Craftsman (late '40s to late '50s)
  • 4" Craftsman (late '40s to late '50s)
  • Sears 3 1/2 Made in Japan
  • Fulton Machine and Vice Company Peerless 26 (Never heard of this vise or the company, but it looks old and cool)

The only issues are rust, except on the Fulton Peerless, where the back end of the slide has a three or four inch long crack in it. Not sure if I'll JB Weld it or try to find someone in the area who welds cast iron (I don't have a welding setup :()

Anyways, here are pics (all from the sellers, as most are still on their way to me). Will post up a family portrait when they're all here, as well as some resto pics when I get working on them).

Incidentally, any tool experts know anything about Fulton or the Peerless 26 model? (I'll post better pics in its own thread later).

Cool vises!!! I really like the style of old Craftsmans!! I have also never herd of or seen a Fulton Machine and Vice Company Peerless 26, but its very cool:thumbup: I'm sure the experts will chime in soon. Someone out there has to know something about it. I found a cheap swivel base for that old Parker 62 1/2 http://cgi.ebay.com/PARKER-VISE-63-1-2-/320733548586?pt=Clamps_Vises&hash=item4aad35902a Hope the link worked  $7.50 is cheap for a parts vise

Thanks, Swingit! I'm going to have to think about that Parker on the Bay. $7.50 is definitely doable. Now I just have to decide if I want to pay the $10.50 shipping. I'm getting cheap :D It would be nice to have a parts vise for my parts vise, though
