School me on oiling air impact guns...

I have an older Ingersoll Rand IR236 (i think, name plate has fallen off) that I bought years ago at Harbor Freight. Other then adding a few drops of air tool oil down the air inlet, what other maintenance should I be doing? Whats the deal with the plug on the side that says OIL? thx guys!

I you want, take the 4 allen screws that hold the bell on, out. inspect and grease the hammer mechanism, reassemble.

That looks like an IR223, which has an oil bath mechanism. No need to take off the front end, just pull the plug out of the side and put some 10 weight oil in it.

That's incorrect. That tool takes oil in the hammer case, not grease. IR customer service told me to use use compressor oil, i.e. a non detergent 20 or 30 wt oil.

It is true, HF did sell IR at one time. I bought one from them in the early 90s...

It depends on the model and that one as well as the one I have are oil bath versions......

So as not to confuse the OP, Dezranger that will require two different types of oil. The hammer case uses something like compressor oil as I mentioned previously, but that is separate from the air motor. You will also still need to oil the air motor with a commercially available "air tool oil" through the air inlet.
