Thank you so very much for the congratulations. This little guy rocks! And my wife has been so amazing...I am in awe of her everyday (including that she still puts up with me!)

While it's true that I haven't gotten a lot of sleep at night, I think the garage kinda sorta had a similar effect not too long ago

As budget allows, I will continue with projects out there! Some next steps are painting the stripe on the door, and then redoing the entire inside of the main garage door: flat black hardware, poly finished wood framing, then teal/tan paint with the stripe.

While I'm not out there, I will continue to work on ideas for the workbench and such. I really appreciate all of your thoughts, suggestions, encouragement, motivation, and inspiration. It has really moved me to make this project happen. And it will continue! And someday not too far away, with a little helper

Congrats on the baby, RL!! Take lots of pics and video. It's amazing how the time flies by and looking back at pics of my youngest (twins), there are huge gaps of time I seriously don't even remember anymore, probably from lack of sleep. So glad I have the pics.

Here's my advice: also think about some kind of carpentry project for the nursery -- and fit that in before you go back to the garage. I'm not half the carpenter you are, but the first project I did in my garage was a kind of a wall unit for my son's room -- a place to put books and also some storage. It got me a lot of credit later, I think. The 800-lb cabinets were met with an eye roll, not hostility.

Also: right now, the kid is basically a little living miracle and, well, kind of a houseplant. But wait for the next four years or so tp play out. You'll get a chance to rediscover the world through that kid's eyes. It will change you in ways you never imagined.

(Plus, one day you'll be able to make him sweep out the garage.)

Congrats! No reason you can't put a rocking chair out in the garage and feed him while you are getting more ideas for the garage. The sooner you climatize him to the garage the sooner he will be your helper out there.. May want to start thinking where his work bench is going to go.

I'm coming in kinda late to this, been off GJ (and the computer) for awhile, so I've missed alot.

First, congrats on the lil one!! These are times that you'll always remember and cherish, and plus you can bring up at embarrassing times when he gets older (like a first date)

Second, AWESOME job on the garage. I'm really digging all the thought, and attention to detail that you've put into everything you're doing. For sure get a couple thumbs up from me!!

Third, while you might not have the money for a steel door, you might want to consider laminating a piece of Stainless to the wood door. A lot cheaper than a full on steel door, easily cleaned, and you can use those refrigerator magnets to hold up lil ones artwork, report cards, or until he gets old enough, that nice Pin Up Girl poster!

Also, what Jack said! And, the first three months for him will be eat, poop and sleep. The next three months he will start to have a personality and will recognize you. Then the next three months will be when he has a personality and he interacts with you and everybody. Then when he starts crawling, cruising and walking, all bets are off. God Luck and have fun. The three of you will have fun together.

RL, Thanks to your idea, I have now finished painting the hardware, bracing supports, door tracks and opener bar on my 16' garage door flat black. Since the 'Salt Life Escape' is in a tan color scheme with tan and black RD floor, I don't know why I hadn't thought of this myself . It really does look good.

I didn't get any pix of the paint process on this door, but when I get my build thread up and running soon, I'll get shots when doing the other door.

Not bad for 6-1/2 cans of HD 97₵ flat black paint... (Thanks for asking me to post on your awesome thread)

When my baby girl was on her way 2 years ago, I built a big changing table/bookcase for the nursery to my wife's specifications. I think its her favorite project that I've ever done. (and it was alot of fun to build)

Ultra Thread Update!!!


Ok guys, I have exciting news.

lol. This has more to do with the wall paint being off than the door paint. However, the stripe on the door isn't exactly straight, so it makes it look even worse. I'll touch it up at some point, but for now it'll do.

Little did I know that his offer was out of this world.

So, I humbly accepted his offer and he put this radio into a box and sent it my way. The box ended up at my office (so it wouldn't be stuck outside my porch when the baby came) and I just recently had the chance to pick it up.

When I opened the box I was stunned. Because THIS is what was inside it:

I am totally flooring by 'Wingnut65's generosity. I was 'dreaming' about having a radio of this caliber and beauty up on the shelves, but with the budget of the garage (and the new baby), I didn't think it was going to happen for a long, long time.

A HUGE thank you goes out to Wingnut for his amazing contribution to the '1950s Garage'. He definitely didn't ask me to post about it or where it came from, but I thought sooner or later someone would want to know the story behind this GORGEOUS radio that resides on the shelves.

This forum continues to amaze me. Some real stand-up gentleman on here, that's for sure, with Wingnut leading the pack.

You're very welcome. It looks a lot more at home in your shop than in a spare bedroom on the top shelf with old Wheaties boxes. Almost looks like you measured the spacing of the dials when you built those verticals. Glad I could contribute. Take Mrs. RL out to dinner.

I was going to comment that we need to get Jack a straght straght-edge. Seems almost everything he builds, he uses a curved or warped straight edge. But those curves and arches look awesome. Beautiful wall unit, Jack.

Thanks. Initially, my plan was to have it curve out. But then I thought I'd be restricting a toddler's access to his books too much -- so I curved it in, instead. I just used a string and a pencil to make a curve on some plywood, and then made a sideways ladder where what would normally be the ladder's uprights were cut as a curve. Then the rungs were put in along that line and the plywood (I used a thinner piece there) was held in place with a bunch of small screws and some glue.

I don't have Red Leader's design or woodworking skills, but he's probably helping with burping right now, so I'll drop in a couple of pictures that will illustrate what I did.

The trick was that the top piece had to swing up in order to open, so I couldn't just sandwich the 'rungs' between the top and the bottom of the box.

Did you just set the rungs in the bottom piece firm enough to hold the curve, or use a curved stringer piece at the top lip to keep the curve the same?

I actually built the curved 'ladder section' and then attached it (on its side) to the base piece, so there's both a header and a footer. I don't think the top of the curved piece would have enough strength, otherwise.

I just used a graphics program (gimp for Windows), but you can just as easily us 'Paint' in the Start > Programs > Accessories menu.

The grinder made it's way from PA to CO via a forum member on the Old Woodworking Machine's forum. I hold a lot of gratitude towards the two gentleman who picked it up and held it for me, then transported it for me. It is now home in the 1950s Garage.


And on top of all that, the picker-upper put together this sweet transport box to give it a comfy ride all the way to Denver. Check this out:

I have a grinder exactly like that, bought at a auction. It has two grinders on one homemade mount, it has the brown krinkle just like the Kennedy tool boxes. If I ever get money to buy a new camara I'll take a picture. Mine looks like brand new.
