needing an outdoor shed for motorcycle

seems my 20x20 garage wont be able to fit all the **** i have and two cars.

So i'm going to venture out into looking at outdoor sheds and put my motorcycle, lawnmower, garden hoses and a bicycle in there.

Being in chicago it will need to withstand the harsh winters, maybe possible theft, i'm not super worried as my motorcycle will be insured.

I've never DIY anything in terms of housing structure, nor do i own like a saw or played with wood. I only know a little above the basic automotive work. So i'm thinking/looking at lowe's or sear's sheds. They seem to work in my mind but i figure i'll asked you guys.

I can go as small as something just fitting my bike, because everything else can be put in the basement.

do you have any friends that can help you build one?
I personally would just build a shed that kind of like a little house
2x4 framing and exterrior plywood with comp roof
alot like a tough shed would be

The wood or plastic flooring of an inexpensive prefab shed may not provide the necessary support your motorcycle requires and the last thing you want to see (at the end of a Chicago winter) is your bike on its side. You may not have the tools or experience, but I can't think of a better excuse for both right now. Look into pouring a small concrete pad next to your garage, then construct a "lean-to" shed on the side (or back). Check local codes and yard easements, but a basic 10'x8' lean-to with a large door (or two) should suffice. Good luck as the snow comes early in Chicago and the clock is ticking.

negative. Its an older all brick 20x20.

Actually my shed cant even be built along the side of that as there isn't much space. I'm putting the shed along the side of the house.

One postive thing, is my backyard is all cement. So if i can avoid the flooring that would be great. The motorcycle should never be on the floor as i have a centerstand on mines and if i didn't i would get some motorcycle stands.

Most of these have a pointed roof, which is a negative for me. The place where the shed is going has a window, about 7 feet off the ground. I would love for it not to be blocked so that room can have some ventilation.

Ride it through the doorway and keep it in a climate controlled area!!



Sounds like a pretty gravy thing to build. Must be someone unemployed with the basic tools to build a small lean to.

Wife and I recently moved into a tract house here in Springfield, Oregon. We decided to have a shed put in right away, and I was too busy with other projects to build it myself (I work too slow...).

Happened to see a 'sample' shed put up in a local shopping center. A guy was in the business of building what he called his 'Mini Barns'. He and his son had our 8 x 10 shed up in about half a day. Shingles and siding match the house. All I have to do is paint it. Price was a lot cheaper than the big box stores, too.

- You might want to check out in your 'country' areas for someone who does this for a living.

Couple places build those here but they are stupid expensive. For a 10x12 the price was about as much as the 16x20 I built. They were built cheap as well.. walls where 2x4s on the flats 24 in OC, floor was 2x6 24" OC. T-1-11 siding (yuk!), etc.

I have a rubbermaid storage locker and kept it outside. It eventually gets chalky and loses it's nice finish. Not sure if these will do the same, but something to keep in mind.

There are 8' X 10' shipping containers that provide security and weather proofing you're looking for. See my avatar at left. These are 8' X 20' containers with hardwood floors. Cost $3200 each six or seven years ago.

If you need a low slope shed roof to avoid blocking the window, then you need a rubber roof and if attached to the house you will need flashing and counter flashing.
What is the siding on the house? Photos?

First things first.......what are the zoning regs, easements, setbacks, HOA rules and deed restrictions?

No prebuilt shed will fit your unique conditions. Either have it built or build it yourself. You'll get a better job for less money than a prebuilt anyway.
Give us photos and measurements and results of your zoning and rules search.

Tools you need to build it are a hand saw, hammer, pencil, utility knife, Caulk gun, speed square and tape measure.

Materials will be:
Sill seal
Galv. 16p Ardox nails
Galv. 10p Ardox nails
Galv 1 1/2" Roofing nails
6" straight anchor bolts, washers and nuts
Tube of 2 part epoxy to set anchor bolts in existing slab
7/16 OSB for wall sheathing and roof sheathing
Wolm. 2x4's for sill plates
Hem-fir 2x4's for wall framing and maybe roof framing
2x6's for door header and possibly ceiling joists
Vinyl siding, J-mold and corner pieces
30# felt roof underlayment
White roof drip edge
3 tab roof shingles
Prehung door and frame
Lockset
Caulk

First thing is to design it based on your storage needs and lot layout and the rules governing you. So get us some photos and measurements and tell us your zoning and location.
What size is the motorcycle? What other things will be stored (Make a list)?

After it is designed we will price it so you know exactly what it will cost.

I just use one of those 10x12 tent type shelters that you find at the home stores for around $100. I store the dirt bikes/ATV's and mowers in it for the winter. Its held up pretty well thru 2 bad winters, Next time I see them on sale I want to get another to replace it.

I dont have to worry about security thats the nice thing about living in a small town.
