rant on: Just received my latest tool purchase from ebay; a new 9 piece SK t handle hex wrench set for $20 shipped. Sounds good right?? well What I got was an ENVELOPE with 3 loose hex wrenches that had been re-taped somewhere in it's travels. To make matters worse this is the second time in a few months this has happened to me. Another seller thought it would be ok to send an 11" breaker bar in an un padded envelope!! WHAT ARE THESE IDIOTS THINKING???

I am sorry to hear that. I on the other hand had by best ebay experience today in two ways. First my SO battery service kit came in the best packaging I have ever received from an ebay package. The roll was wrapped in bubble wrap, and then the plastic airbags were surrounding it. Emailed the guy that I couldn't have been happier. Second, I waited all day for a deal... and got one on a ratcheting screwdriver handles. Again, sorry to hear about your bad luck... but ebay is my source during the week when the truck isn't around.

That's what feedback and paypal complaints are for.

OHHHH yes I already had a nice back and forth with the seller and then left my feedback. All I got was "we ship like this all the time and never had a problem" so it would cost me $10 for a proper flat rate box to return a $20 item to get my refund well F@#K that I gave her plenty of chances to resolve but I said screw it and just wrote it off as a learning experience.

I must confess that my last purchase before the allen wrenches was a big lot of proto stuff that came from an APO address in Germany and that young serviceman sure knew how to package tools!! every tool bubble wrapped individually and stuffed with newspaper in every nook and cranny. I actually sent him an email after receiving it thanking him for the excellent packing job and for his service

Couldn't you return it in a flat rate envelope or padded flat rate envelope? Those would only be $5.

Also, if it's 13oz or less you can ship it by first class. That's really cheap.

Those flat rate envelopes are NOT for shipping hard items more that 1/8" thick. that is what started this mess. The automated sort machines have rollers that squeeze the items out like a zit. This is the "cheaper shipping is better" mentality that caused all this in the first place. If i shipped them back in a padded envelope I can almost guarantee that none of them would make it back and I would have no wrenches and no refund. At least I have three of the nine and I'm not taking any more chances. Also I would have to figure in my time and aggravation to return it and it's not worth it.

I've shipped probably 100 1/2" drive ratchets in flat rate envelopes. I properly packaged them and I've never lost a single item in shipping.

I realize you're pissed, but if the seller was smart, he could easily have packaged them properly and shipped those in a flat rate envelope.

Also, you should dispute it with ebay. This GJ member had a similar situation and won.

I just don't get it.

Priority Mail boxes are FREE from the Post Office. What is the seller saving in weight by using an envelope? A couple ounces to save 50 cents in shipping?

Whenever, and I mean, whenever I receive a damaged or re-taped package or envelope I always refuse it. I immediately send the seller an email stating why the item was refused. I also try to take a picture.

eBay and PayPal will always back the buyer in a dispute if a package was refused due to damage.

The OP's wrenches were probably too long for a small flag rate box.

Also, can you refuse a package after it is delivered? My items are always delivered when I'm at work, so I can't refuse them. Could I take a damaged package back to the post office an tell them I'm refusing it? I wonder if they would accept it back?

I've taken packages right back to the counter. Never had an issue.

I have made my first and last 4 eBay tool purchases within the last month.
The first item paypal lost the payment.
The second item still hasn’t arrived. Lost by the post office. I hope it comes thru.
Third item was fine.
Forth item arrived today. A ¾ Wright ratchet looked great in the pictures that I looked at, described as excellent condition. I open it up and there are these four huge numbers ground into the side of the head. Not just a little etching, but ground in 1/16th inch deep. So I re looked at the listing and way down at the bottom of all the pictures is a shot of some of the numbers taken at such an extreme angle so that the numbers are barely visible.
Now I didn’t look at all the pictures, my bad, but to burry a crappy off angle photo, and not mention the markings in the listing. Sorry, but I too am done with eBay.

File a claim with both ebay and PayPal. Although it's not fair to the seller, PayPal WILL refund your money and you will not be required to return anything to the seller.

PayPal tries to prevent what happened to you by pretty much automatically issuing refunds when stuff like this happens. Unfortunately, they also issue refunds for virtually any complaint, even when there is no fault on the part of the seller (clearly not the issue in this case). PayPal tried to stiff me as a seller for $3500 on an item that the buyer received promptly, was happy with, and never filled a claim about! I finally had to involve the state Attorney General's office to get my money and then I closed my PayPal account.

Moral of the story - if you are buyer PayPal is your friend. If you are an honest seller, PayPal is your worst enemy. It's not WHETHER they'll rip you off, it's WHEN.

That link was pretty funny! Reminded me of an ebay tool seller from many years back. He was just like the sports card seller.

BTW, I gave up ebay long ago. Never looked back.

Any seller that doesn't think something like that is significant and doesn't high light it in the photos AND the written description should get a negative immediately just to warn the rest of us.

I suppose youve never heard of the tractor collectors stuffing the larger versions of those with tractor weights in recent years then? Regarding the breaker bar in an envelope, I had several long extensions shipped to me years ago with just a label and stamps taped to them, no envelope or other packaging period. I suspect the postman was more worried about the other packages than mine that day. :bounce:

I gave up on ebay several years ago for tools but for a very different, more important reason - ITS RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE!!! Ebay = 3000% real world value on 99.9% of the tools. Only on ebay will SO sell for more than it will off the truck.

i wonder who is ending up with all these tools, they are probably laughing while they put another one in there toolbox lol. i received two empty envelopes before which shoulda been a mac 1/2" ratchet (25$) and a mac 3/8 flex head ratchet (30$). I dont understand why my mail man would put an empty padded envelope in my mail box and not say anything, because i would have rejected it. I dont see why people dont take the time to package there items correctly. when i sell things I see it as i dont want to replace it when i sell it, so why not slap confirmation and 5lbs of tape on it lol.

ebay tool sellers are too hit & miss to get a good one.

You should stick with the classifieds here! :)

Most recently UPS "lost" my 18pc CMan Pro 6pt SAE combo's from Cripe. Not their fault by anymeans and they only had one. Funny part was it showed delivered.

Now I can't rule out somone took it off my doorstep, but nothing else has ever happened and we get quite a few things. But i've also heard other stories of things getting "lost" to the parking lot.

had one bad ebay lately with someone listing sockets a new and they clearly weren't, he took offense and i filed a dispute. said he would refund if I shipped back, he listed the address to send them to which was not the orginaly origin. Said whatever it was on ebay's site as proof. Well, he claims he never gets them and then the return address changes on ebay. So ebay sides with him. So I have no money and no sockets. turns out a few other things he sold that week were not as described either. Filed an appeal but never heard anything. I still buy on ebay quite a bit but alot more careful now.

Before I started selling on eBay, I bought many, many Snap-on tools on eBay. While there are a few purchases I regret, overall I ended up with a large selection of Snap-on tools for a fraction of the cost of new. My general rule was to try to pay 50% of new price or less including shipping. And I only bought tools in Very Good, Excellent, or New condition. With a price cap like that I got outbid frequently, but with a lot of patience, I gradually built my collection. There were a few items I needed to pay more than 50% for, but those were items that were a bit less common or in high demand, (like new F80 ratchets right after their release).

My 'regret' items were almost always due to my failure to properly read a listing, but I learned like every one else that if a listing does not say if a tool is not engraved....ASK before bidding. I also try to stay away from listings without clear pictures, (or stock photos).

I've seen every sort of crazy packaging, but I don't know why folks get worked up over poor packaging. Since it's 100% the seller's responsibility to get an item to the buyer without getting lost or damaged, the only one who can lose is the seller. Tools are a commodity, and as long as you look at them as tools, and not some irreplacable collector's item, if an item is lost or destroyed on it's way to you, it's not the end of the world. Most sellers will immediately make good, or eBay will force them to. I don't see a lot of risk of loss to the buyer.

I bought a suit once from a guy in England. It arrived repackaged by the post office, shredded up. He'd sent it in a plastic bag...with nothing else. Not even a padded bag. He said, not my fault, your USPS damaged it. I pointed out that the new bag it was in said Royal Mail on it. He said too bad.

Anyway, Ebay made me spend $50 to mail the damn thing back before they'd refund my money.

Not a fan of used tools or private sellers, especially private sellers selling used tools, period.

Yes, that means for the most part no ebay/clist/classifieds for me. You guys can have that junk.

I will deal with "private" sellers selling new or bulk quantities of new items. Tool condition has nothing to do with shipping quality, but covers other problems commonly dealt with in the tool buying arena.

I gave up on ebay because of paypal.
I sold a real nice Iwata lph400 spray gun kit on ebay for $400 with free shipping. The winning bidder paid right away and the gun shipped the next morning via FedEx. The day the gun arrived to him, he sent me a message saying the gun was not the one he wanted. To be nice, I offered the guy a full refund once I received the gun back. I even offered to pay for the return shipping.

The day BEFORE the gun was to arrive back to me, I get an email from paypal saying that the buyer had opened a paypal dispute against me and they took the $400 from my account until the dispute was resolved. I assumed the buyer was just new and nervous, and wanted to make sure I refunded him his money once I received the gun back.
The next day when the packaged arrived, I realized why he opened a paypal dispute before I received the package. The box was full of very carefully weighed out grass seed! The thief put just enough grass seed in the box to weigh the same as the spray gun.

Paypal, being completely non human said that because the package he sent me was the same size and weight as the package I sent him, That was "proof" that he returned the same item I sent him. Paypal gave him the $400 + $15 for return shipping.

I had a 3 year spotless account with paypal at the time, with over 200 positive ebay feedbacks (1 negative) and his account was less then 60 days old with only 5 feedbacks from $0.99 items.

Two weeks later the spray gun was back on ebay with a BIN of $300 from a member with great feedback.(2000+). It was very easy to tell that it was my gun because I had my name laser etched into the handle by a zippo engraving shop.(BTW: Real cool way to mark tools) I quickly pointed this out to paypal, but by then the buyer/thief had already closed his paypal and ebay accounts.

Paypal did nothing but treat me like a liar from the beginning. Now ebay only allows paypal as payment so I'm done paypal and ebay all together.

The flat rate envelopes are acceptable for shipping items such as you handles but common sense dictates the pointed ends need to be covered.
