As the title states, where do I, average Joe Smoe buy:

Proto
Snap-On
Mac

sockets?

I know I can get S&K at Sears. Its just hard fr me to pay that price when the Craftsman brand is there for 1/3 the price!

Okay, I see Grainger sells Proto, Blackhawk and a few others. Not likeing the prices and don't you have to be a buisiness to buy from them?

Snapon.com has most of the current catalog items available and periodically free shipping. I prefer E-bay, or the local pawnshops myself.

The Snap-On and Mac guys are both listed in the local phone book. I just call them up, tell them I need or want whatever, and he tells me where to meet him at. Usually, the next stop on his route that is handy for me. I don't know if there are other salesdrivers that are that accommodating in the country but they are around here. I think they realize that a good number of farmers, ranchers, and others who may not directly make a living turning wrenches, still rely on them heavily and appreciate what they have to offer. I've seen a lot of farm shops that are outfitted as well or better than a lot of commercial shops.

you can buy from grainger without being a business, i believe. you should be able to just walk in and ask the guy behind the counter. i use my companies account when i get stuff there. im sure somebody else on this forum in your area has a company with an account there if they won't let you buy. you just buy cash or credit on your own using the account.

I know you didn't ask specifically about SK, but you can buy some of their stuff via Amazon. Sometimes the prices are pretty good, but they still carry a hefty premium.

Thanks fo the info. Part of the reason I ask is that I was going thru my box and putting things on the new Hansen trays and noticed a few things.

1. I have NO 1/2 metric sockets! (Other than the impacts I scored last weekend.) I have nearly every 3/8 and 1/4 but no 1/2. I have no idea how I over looked this. I have seen a few "sets" but would still need to fill holes in them. I guess I'm just looking for a cheaper alternative.

2. The Snap On question is more of a warranty thing. I have 3 whole SO sockets. Yep, only 3. Two of them are complete trash. The 1/2 inch 3/8 drive is completely reemed out. The 1-1/4 inch 1/2 drive is loose on and showing a lot of wear inside. Both or nearly devoid of chrome. How do I get these replaced? Its not like I don't have others in those sizes (Craftsman, Proto, Thornton, Pittsburg, "Taiwan" and no name) but it would be nice to have them in good condition.

I took a look on Ebay. The "damaged" Proto sets (case damage) are not selling any cheaper than Grainger's web site if you include the silly shipping costs these people are asking. Some of the S&K stuff is okay but still on the high end of what I am lookng to pay. (I have a $$ point in mind.) I know I am looking for a super deal and may be passing up some very good stuff.

I don't know much about Cornwell. Guess I need to look them up. Are they a truck only outfit? How would a ruck only outfit like SO feel about a warranty on 2 small pieces from a non-customer?

from the snap-on website:

Snap-on Tools Company LLC
Consumer Warranty Information Center

write them a letter and be sure to post back what they tell you
I would love to know what their policy on this is, it would detremine if I buy anymore of their tools

If you do not mind me asking: when was that? and what address did you use? I wanted to send in a couple of items and was told by phone to contact a local truck but I am now getting the run around from the truck - actually two trucks. Thanks.

That address is for warranty information. I would like to know where to send the item for replacement. When I called SO asking for an address to send the item to, I was told I needed contact a truck for replacement. The trucks are not coming through for me. That is why I asked the question.

I see your point. You could always call them back up and tell them what happened with the truck guys.

Why aren't the truck guys handling the replacement for you?

You could always call up and tell them that there are no tool trucks that service your area. If they tell you who to go to, you can then tell them about your experiences with the tool trucks.

Steuy,
Thanks for getting me motivated on this, been messing with it for 3 months and pretty much gave up. I am not a professional wrench and do not regularly buy from the trucks so they do not have much of an interest. It is only a 3” wobble plus extension but I was annoyed at the truck treatment. I called SO this am and made noises about consumer fraud. I got kicked over to the manager for the Pacific Northwest area. She promised to send a new one to me in the mail today, I will give her the benefit of the doubt for a few days. Seems like a lot of hassle for warranty tho.
Sorry for the post hijak.

It was about 3 months ago, I didn't call anyone first(they can't say no that way), I just sent it here:

Yes, good to hear. I am also in Norcal, and it seems my Snap-On warranty ended the last time I stepped off the truck 15 years ago.

speaking of pawnshops, I happened to be driving by a 24 hr pawnshop the other night at around midnight, and was wondering if anybody actually sold stuff....I saw the shiftiest of shifty guys pawning something...you wouldn't think it'd be worth it to pay someone to work overnight, but I guess people actually do use it , go figure

Great to hear! Let us know if/when it arrives. This really is good to know for those of us who, like you, aren't pro wrenches and don't have good relationships with the tool truck guys.

Even though it was a pain, SO finally came through. The truck guys were of no help but my call to the company got results. They mailed me a new extension and a prepaid postage label to send the old one back.
