Wood look on the walls

I am planning my garage renovation to start in teh next few months, and I am wondering...

Here are some pics of what I am starting with:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114576

I am going to be cruising Craigslist and anywhere else I can find to get some previously enjoyed kitchen cabinets on the cheap, and build a workbech on the back wall...

But I am looking for the "Rustic" look... on a budget... It is completely sheetrocked, so that killed the open ceiling/beam look, but on the walls, I want some of the warm, natural wood look similiar to this:

Any Suggestions?

Clean wood like that will be expensive. Old fence wood is cheaper and easier to find, especially in large quantities. We decorated a hot rod shop I worked at with old fence wood. Just started nailing it to the sheetrock then finished off all the edges and openings with more fence wood. Gave the place an old barn look to it. We moved to another shop about a year later, tore the old stuff out and reinstalled it all at the new place. Of course it's not as nice looking as above, but it did have the look the owners were after.

While you're cruising CL look for old wood flooring too or old wood fencing. Either could be used to give you that wood rustic look for very little money. There are several threads in where folks have used these materials to create a rustic look.

One of the members on this site did the same exact thing, but I can't remember who it was. Maybe someone else does. He used repurposed wood put horizontally on his walls. Everyone was kind of down on him until he showed what it looked like.

Man I hate the CRS syndrome:mad:

I search the forum under "Wood Walls", "Wood Flooring", Paneling.. etc but never got any good hits...

I'll keep searching...

I dig the rustic look.. I wish my ceiling wasn't finished, I like the exposed trusses as well... but I am not tearing the sheet rock out for it ;)

Knotty pine tonge and grove beaded plank covering kits are relatively cheap. Comes in like 3/8"x6" wide board 3 pieces per box. At around $1 t0 $1.15 per sq ft. The size of your garaqge walls would probably cost under $500 to do it all with *new*. Look it up at home depot or lowes. Not the 1" think stuff but the lighter beaded plank covering type. Heree is a link.

I am using the Tongue and Groove Knotty Pine Planks in the Upstairs of my Garage.
I also like the Rustic Look and feel.
Lowes, Home Depot and Menards all Carry them.

I'd recommend checking out the local papers for anyone that tears down old barns. The wood doesn't look the best on the outside but if you sand it or run it threw a planer its beautiful underneath.

Do you have any saw mills in your area? Native 1 x 10 siding is usually pretty inexpensive, at least it is around here. If you don't have a planer, most of the mills will plane it for you for a charge.

Check your local lumber mills for rough sawn lumber. I get kiln dried rough sawn white pine 1"x 12" for .75 a board ft and rough sawn Poplar for $1.00 a board ft. If you leave the rough sawn outside for 1-2 months it will have the "weathered" look. YMMV.

For even a more rustic look, I have seen it done with boards from old palets. Here is a lousy pic, but it gives you an idea.

One thing to keep in mind: if the garage is attached to the house, the sheet rock is there to meet fire code. You can cover it with a layer of wood, but don't tear it out.

Jack..

Your Garage is incredible... so is your Porsche...

Considering the house we bought is only 4 years old.. I think the Sheet rock will stay... The Boss would freak if I ripped that out!

Also keep in mind that type of wall will contain more dust. If'n you're gonna do bodywork, you might want top look into some kind of curtains.

Thanks Nighttrain...

is that just pine boards?

What did you finish it with?

Incredible place BTW!

I'm not much of a bodywork guy, so I think what little I do will be OK.. Thanks for the tip though, I hadn't thought of that.

Reverend,

Thanks

Yes the wood is just pine I bought pre- milled from Home Depot. Lowes has the same stuff. It is pretty thin but I had plywood behind it on the office. It would go over sheetrock easily.

I used a Minwax spar urathane, just one coat with a brush. There were several colors to the wood but with time and the big garage door open it has all reached the same fade ? color. Keep us posted

You could use T1-11 siding inside and stain it my buddy has it in his garage and it looks good. Here is a picture
