I have seen some fake snap on tools on eBay. Before. And wondered. Well today I was at a truck stop. And saw a nice aluminum flashlight. That said snap On. It was the official logo. And on the back it said officially licensed product. But also said made in china. I was not going to shell out. 25 bucks for a china flashlight. But my question is. What are these fake imposters and how is this legit. More info would be appreciated.

These are "Real" snap on flashlights made in china... Snap on licensed their name to these producers. I bought a bunch from True Value or Ace hardware on sale for like $7.99 and sold them for a profit on Ebay.....
They licensed their name to a bunch of other stuff... Powerwashers, knives, stools and Electrical cord reels.... Often these are available at Costco or on Amazon.

Apparently, Snap On Corporate in a arguably moronic business decision, licensed the Snap On name to a Chinese distributor. Whether it was a cheap marketing attempt or a quick cash cow, there are now a number of "accessories" from China with the Snap On name being offered at Costco, Hardware Stores, Ebay, and other bulk outlets. I've seen cheap chinese Power Washers, Shelves, Stools, Bags, Flashlights, Knives, Extension Cords, Trouble Lights, etc.

Saw a Snap On compressor @ Costoco last week. I think it was like $189.
It's no different than anything else - they're all just brand names. You think Ralph Lauren has a cologne factory (or even a clothing factory)? Or that Mont Blanc now makes watches? Or Victorinox Swiss Army makes backpacks, flashlights and luggage?
There are brands with a helluva lot more identity / appeal than Snap-On that license their name.

Actually, from a stock holder stand point, it is a brilliant move. Look at what Harley Davidson has done with brand imaging from doing this exact same thing. Why do you think you are able to purchase HD stuff at Target or Walmart, or anywhere else for that matter from anywhere other than a HD dealer?
How does one avoid purchasing branded "****"? Simply purchase from the real deal which would be your local Snap-On franchisee.
By the way, in case you are wondering, the SO franchise force threw an absolute fit when this was announced. Keep in mind that there are obviously exceptions to the following statement, however, the average SO stockholder is neither your local franchisee or SO customer.
For what it's worth, I am or previously was in each of the categories I just mentioned.

And that's exactly why there is so much pathetic garbage on the market today - "brand imaging" and worrying more about kissing the stockholders' asses than producing a quality product have done more damage to American businesses than anything else has over the years. Look at what Sears has done to the once proud Craftsman marque in the name of stockholders getting an extra .00000013 cents per share. Look at what Stanley has done not only to themselves but everyone that they've bought out.
Sometimes you have to put "the market" aside and take some damned pride in what you are doing.

I saw this too. Strange because snap on also sells air compressirs as actual snap on products. If that costco one had one more cfm I would have bought it, though.

Great first post, way to dig up something from almost 10 years ago to make a statement.
They have ended the licensing deal almost 5 years ago now. Might want to dig that up for your second post.
I thought this was going to be about something current like HF on ebay with the name hidden and usage of misleading words in the titles to make people think it's snap on. Like the people selling print outs of game systems as the system itself. But it's actually a 10 y/o thread about the marketing teams modernization (modern being +5 years ago really, 10 y/o post but branded knifes were big for awhile despite their quality).
Isn't the lights still made in china? Or are they NOS being found? Thought the SO site had something about electronics being made somewhere US but the lights still get hit with the china label.
