Years ago I introduced my brother-in-law to the hobby of junk yard "treasure hunting." Today I no longer have time to do it, but he is retired, and goes about once a week. Now every so often I am the lucky beneficiary of something cool that he has found.

One of our favorite places is a scrap metal yard. They haul junk in, and crush it almost immediately, so you have to be lucky and find something quickly after it arrives to the yard. Lee and I made friends with the owners years ago, and generally speaking they sell us just about anything we find at scrap metal prices or below (often for free, because we haul all of our scrap metal to them, and accept no payment for it). But today Lee called me from the junkyard and said, "There is an OLD floor jack down here, badly rusted. It's mechanical, not hydraulic, and kind of short. You want it?" I told him sure, bring it home!

Lee showed up at my office a few hours later, and this is what he had found:

As I started to check it out, Lee said he hadn't seen a name on it, but it seemed too old to be Asian. He pointed out that it had a stylized "W" on the side, and so I guessed it must be a Walker.

Then I noticed two brass tags riveted to the handle. One side listed it as a "Walker," just as I had guessed. But my good camera wasn't handy, and I had a heck of a time trying to photo the tag with my old camera. Sorry:

The tag on the other side had no important data on it, so OF COURSE that photo turned out fine. Sheesh!

Below is a pic of the right side:

Look at the handle, with wood riveted to the steel bar. Cool, eh?

Here is a shot of the underside. When Lee called me about it on the phone, he said that the rear wheels were missing. But that was because it was so dirty and rusty, and the rear wheels so small that he didn't see them.

This jack is REALLY rusted up. All but one wheel are frozen, and one of them even has a flat spot where the jack has been dragged across the floor on the frozen wheel for years. Most moving parts everywhere are stuck. But it can probably be saved, with work and ingenuity. And...it was FREE. :pimpflash But the LAST thing I need is another project. So now I've got to decide whether to drop some other project I had in mind and keep this...or send it back to the scrap yard.

:dunno: Whaddaya think, folks?

I guess you are going to have to drag it into the house and use the tub for an electrolysis bath.

Lump, that thing is awesome! To me the tag says Walker Lift-a-car 716A.

I'd love to just soak that thing in marvel mystery oil for a week (or more, what's the rush) and see what happens!

Don't scrap it -- if you decide to move it on, and you've got a corner to store it, maybe I can have a friend from Columbus pick it up and hold it.

Great find!

Doggone it, Heelsroll! You're gonna get me interested in this thing. And I've been trying so hard to remind myself that I have too many projects, and too many hobbies!

That is a piece of history right there, and deserves to be saved.

Very cool.

I agree, that is a great find! I saw a mechanical floor jack about that size, (but it was not a Walker, started with "W" though..) similar in size and condition to that one, all rust, at a yard sale. Had to leave it behind though, he wanted $100. (he also wanted a lot for some of his other "Antique" tools, stuff I usually can get for a couple of bucks...)

I'd have gone about $25, maybe $50 if it wasn't locked in rust so I knew it had some prayer of working again, but not a C note.

Hmmmm....don't you wish it could talk? Wonder what stories it could tell. Wonder what kinds of cars and trucks it has lifted, and what year models? Probably way back.

Sigh. You guys are killing me. You should be ashamed of yourselves. :eyecrazy:

Just repaying the favor to you and the board at large!

Heck, let it marinate in a big contractors garbage bag, inside a tub to be safe, with a thick coat of MMO. Betcha the patina will win you over.

You have any connections with someone that has a large blasting setup? You could bead blast that thing and in short order it would already look 100% better. Or, just soak it in a huge tub of something to lube all the old joints and free up stuck parts, while you go about your other business.

Just thinking out loud!

You guys are twisting my arm... Gotta sleep on it for tonite.

Getting up early tomorrow morning, for one of the most promising auctions I have seen coming up in a LONG time. Best thing about it is that there are several other ones going on at the same time, and I am hopeful that bidding competition will be light.

Film at 11....tomorrow night! Wish me luck.

Looks like something that would be at home lifting a Ford Model A. Any idea of when it was made?

I agree that electrolysis would be what I would do first (well, actually I'd degrease it and then do electrolysis).

Awesome Jim! And wouldn't ya know it, American Restorations just had an episode Friday night of them restoring a 1920s tire changing machine, completely rusted over like your jack, that had been sitting outside as a lawn ornament for the last ten years. The guy paid $1,200 for the restoration and said he thought it would look great now out in the front yard. :shocking:

Too bad you're so far from me. Restoring this thing would make up for the Walker restore I screwed up last year.

Lump - that's a great tool, and well worth saving if you can!

Personally, I use a Boric Acid (Borax) for cleaning heavily rusted stuff!

If you're interested I'll detail how, but it's dead easy, works as well as electrolysis, but you don't need to piss about with the 'electro' bit!

Hey, hello guys! I am so glad that someone besides me in this old world cares about that old Walker floor jack.

YES, I still have it.

NO, I haven't touched it in a while.

NO, it isn't so far gone that it can't be saved. I don't plan to part it out.

I just finished up producing my fifth big outdoor event here in Ohio this past weekend, and I'm still exhausted. Nearly all of my "projects" have ground to a halt this year. I haven't even had time to share recent treasures I have stumbled onto at a couple estate sales. And now it's deer season!

YES, I promise not to scrap it.

NO, I don't really want to sell it.

NO, I can't promise I will work on it this year.

YES, I really wish I could get started on it.

YES, I love the folks on Garage Journal who love old garage equipment, just like me!
