Cool video  I freely admit I'm a nerd, but I love to see how mechanical things go together.

They manufacture all over the place.

The majority of their production is claimed still to be German, but they have/use plants in France, China, Mexico, and the US. Long and rocky relationship with TTI, it tried to buy Metabo a few years ago.

The funny thing is, some of metabo's tools are made by TTI, in china
And some by black and decker, in mexico

I have never heard this before, and I'm quite surprised!

I have a recent Metabo SBE750 hammerdrill that was made in Germany, and a Ridgid R3120 jigsaw that was made by Metabo in Germany. I know that at least one other Ridgid powertool was also made by Metabo in Germany - a 6" random orbit sander.

Of course, many of the other Ridgid tools are made by TTI, so I'm wondering now if this is more than a coincidence...

I have heard nothing but good about Metabo. Supposed to have one of the smoothest buffers on the market, well balanced too.

I bought the Metabo Powermaxx 4.8v drill/screwdriver from Rocklers during the half price sale ($79). The basic design is VERY good, very German, says made in PRC, but the quality seems first rate.

What?! Dammit, I was thinking about trading in my 10.8V mini Bosch.. even in a product catalogue it says built in germany.. you can't trust anyone..

Wanna read something depressing ?

By 2010, Metabo aims to have closed its plants in Meppen and Laichingen, employ 50% of its staff in Germany (a loss of 500 jobs) and have manufacturing sites only in Nürtingen and Shanghai:

Link

(Google translation, original German here)

The only positive element I can see is that the dodgy translation suggests that the future of Nürtingen is "controversial", whereas "unumstritten" actually translates as "certain".

This made me laugh, from their forum:

"In spite of its country of origin (Made in PRC) there was a feeling of it being a strong device, very robust, durable housing material and really violently strong."

How do you say 'deja vu' in German ?

Don't worry, the good metabo tools are made in germany. The chinese made tools include that little cordless screwdriver thing they have, an entry level grinder W6-115, and the 18v reciprocating saw that is mechanically identical to the ridgid X2 version (the plastic handle and battery attachment are unique to metabo though). Their PSE 1200 reciprocating saw is almost identical to the mexican made 9748 tigersaw, aside from the rotating handle.

Aside from those, metabo makes really good hammer drills and grinders, and their random orbital 6" sander is good for the money. The cordless stuff is weak. The portable table saw, miter saw, and planer are too expensive.
