My son has an issue at his shop in ohio.He is feeding a sub panel and there is an existing 1 1/4" conduit that he can either use,or if he cant, he will have to tear out 16' of his deck to bury a new pipe. he will be running 3 - 2's and a # 6 ground. Is that going to be allowed in the 1 1/4" pipe?

should work just fine. assuming Sch. 40 PVC and THHN conductors.

Its going to be inspected and his concern is that they will not allow those conducters in that size pipe. I told him to use 1 1/2", and he would but he doesnt want to tear out the deck to dig the trench. He put the 1 1/4" in when he built the deck because he knew that he was going to run this elec in the future.

you can put 5-#2 THHN's in a 1.25" pipe. what he wants to do will pass inspection.

If all he's feeding is a 100 subpanel, three #3's and a #8 ground are all thats required unless he's upsizing for voltage drop.

Upsizing ungrounded conductors kicks in the requirements of 250.122(B).

Here is a copy & paste of it from the 2008 NEC.

(B) Increased in Size. Where ungrounded conductors are
increased in size, equipment grounding conductors, where
installed, shall be increased in size proportionately according
to the circular mil area of the ungrounded conductors.

Just tossing that tidbit in.

THHN will not pass in buried conduit. He needs THWN-2 or other wet service rated wire. Some types (such as THW) are larger in diameter and might not meet the conduit fill limits.

Most THHN is dual rated as THWN, but it is good to verify before buying

I've never seen any that wasn't dual rated. But it seems like someone always has to point it out on here....:headscrat
