File Handles

Bought four new Nicholson files today...6" round, 6" half round, and the same in 8" variations. All made in USA Was really disappointed to see some of what appear to be the newer Nicholson files are made in China

Anyway, I am looking to get a file handle. Are these pretty much all the same or what? Looking at this one from Snap-On, not sure if it will work or not...

I wouldn't waste the money on Snap On handles. I used the Nicholson handles and I think they work great. Nicholson has soft grip handles for about half the Snap On cost.

for my small files, I use the Stihl grips that i found at a local dealer.

I hear from Merkava (see, I spelled it correctly this time!) that the snap on soft grip handles dont wear well. Based on his research on www.ebay.com, these handles are made of inferior materials, and they will end up breaking and coming apart. Despite no actual hands on experience by Mr. Merkava himself, relying on auction photographs from www.ebay.com is a very reliable way to get correct reviews on various professional tools.

Golf balls work just fine.
Just remember to NOT use the same brand of balls the little woman whacks around the pasture. Nothing pisses a woman off more than when she thinks you swiped her golf balls. Well, there are other things that'll piss a woman off too, like continuing to breathe.

$10.80 for a file handle? Yikes! Just get the Nicholson handles they have at the local big box - $1.99 or less for the wooden handle, $3.50 or less for the "ergonomic" soft plastic one.

I have several General tools handles. I like them because they adjust well and I can change them to different files quickly. There are expensive though $8.25 ea.

I guess I'm the fish to take the bait today. How do you make a file handle out of a golf ball? and the wire nut thing, tiny file?

I haven't used golf balls as Franz suggested, and he's banned for some reason so can't answer.

As for the wire nuts, they just keep the pointed end from poking you, but seem to stay on in my case.

A stick of 1" dowel works well cut into lengths of about 4-6 inches. Round the edges and drill a hole in the end and jam your file in.

I am surprised no one has suggested an old cron cob. Which I have seen used many times, will never slip out of your hands.

My guess is to drill a hole in the golf ball ,hammer the file tang into the hole. Add JB weld to keep the tang in

I was looking at some files I got from my dad years ago. The handle is called "SKROO-ZON" . I was at Wholesale Tool in tulsa the other day and actualy saw them, so i bought two . It is a nice wood handle turned and shaped on a lathe,steal cap,w/ a threaded insert. Oh, and made in the U.S.A.
There is a # stamped on the end of the handle, why? File size? Cheap from 3-6 dollars each. Sorry no pics.

I would have suggested corn cobs if you had not beat me to it! I have some Crafty handles (round black plastic) a set of red SO (just like the old screwdriver handles I got em cheap & new in a hock shop, so I couldn't resist them) I also have a few red plastic Nickolsons (alright but always seemed to fall off on me) some with dowel rods as was already suggested and a couple made of steel that I spun and knurled on the lathe. I also have a few with plain jane wood handles so I have em covering the spectrum! The fancy ones have made me look down my nose on my old corn cobs in recent years, I may have to ditch em!

If your really struck on having snap on handles ask your snap on guy if he has any warranty screwdriver handles around.Some times they dont have to ship them back and just throw them out.One of the guys in my shop has three or four on files that he bought of the dealer for ten bucks.

Rather ugly, but easier to accomplish and easier to hold is the corncob! The golf ball has nothing on it!
