So I am in need of a 1/2" socket set all I have is a craftsman shallow SAE set in 1/2" I found the 26" Triangle Tools Set for $50 (MSRP $179.99).

http://www.sears.com/triangle-26-pc-uni-grip-metric-socket-set-1-2-in/p-00912765000P

Now reading the reviews they seem to be very good quality. The sizes range from 8mm to 32mm with just a few missing in between, it also includes the ratchet, extension, Superman u-joint, T-handle and probably a couple other things, in a very nice metal case.

So I am about to order this but I thought I would check with you experienced folks:

-Is there something better in quality around this price range I should be looking at?

-Will these compare to my craftsman sockets/ratchets in terms of quality?

I mean this seems like an unbelieveable deal, If I like it I am going to get the 1/4" and 3/8" ratchet set for $50 and the extension set for $20 so they all match and I really need some quality ratchets.... Thanks guys!

Looks identical to the cheeseball stuff Stanley makes. I'd take that $50 and put it towards something a little better. Craftsman would be a better choice mainly due to the ease of warranty replacements.

shouldnt need to warranty 1/2" drive stuff ever unless you're really going to town with cheaters and impacts.

Looks like a decent deal. I want to say mrholeshot tried out their ratchets and really like them. I believe they're double pawl and have something like 100+ tooth count.

If you need the tools you cant go wrong for $50.

I'd suggest searching the board for reviews...

...the ratchets are 72 tooth with dual pawls, so it acts like 144 tooth. The u-joint is fantastic. The satin finish is very nice.

Quality seems to be pretty good, although they don't have much distribution network in North America right now if warranty is a concern (which for the price it really shouldn't be). Looks like a good deal to me, just need to add deep sockets.

Wow, is Sears blowing these out to get rod of the brand for good? That's a steep discount.

I have a 1/4 drive set, as well as a 3/8 ratchet and some sockets/u-joint. The quality seems to be quite high. I'm not familiar with what specific cheeseball Stanley stuff the poster above is referring to, but I believe that Triangle is making some nice tools. I absolutely believe that set is worth $50, I'll tell you that much.

Jerry Lin, from Triangle, was trying to become a sponsor here. I don't think it's happened yet, though.

Thanks guys the order is in, should have it by wednesday or thursday and will do a review. The quality looks excellent to me and all the reviews on this board seem very good, usually I only go american made but couldnt pass this deal up. I am not a heavy user anyway but I want my tools to last a lifetime if I am going to invest in them... Im guessing they will be closer to my craftsman than Stanley stuff but we will have to wait and see I guess :pimpflash

I have no idea why but I couldn't resist this. I want to try out the ratchet and I like the large sockets. I read some reviews and it seems OK for the price on closeout.

Damn. I really need better sockets in those sizes. My craftsman only goes up to 19mm and my larger sockets are china shits. Kinda wish I saw this before puttung in my harbor freight order.

Same story here. A friend of mine bought a set earlier this year. I think that they're a lot nicer than the current Craftsman ratchet and sockets. I ordered a set first thing this morning.

I needed another 1/2" drive ratchet and more sockets like I need another hole in my head. I guess I'll be battling the cat over the Seafood Sensations toward the end of the month. :wtf:

I got my set today. Sears put it in a 3'x3' box with maybe 100 packing peanuts, so it was thumping freely. Luckily it appears unharmed.

I didn't have much time to play with it but I like it for my purpose (paddock at the race track).

The ratchet definitely needs some lube. Clankity clank.

I received mine Monday and must have gotten your peanuts. Mine was chock full. The box was 27x16x6.

The OEM packaging from Triangle was pretty impressive. The box, brochure, and spare springs, were very professional. As were the metal storage box.

I pulled the ratchet apart first thing and added a tiny bit of Lubricate Aero. I also oiled the detent ball.

All in all, a hell of a bargain for $68.85 delivered, with tax.

A hearty thank you to dj00140 for the initial question about this set.

Mine are so pretty that I kind of hate to use them. :)

I see that Sears has now placed the Triangle 3/8 set on closeout for $49.97 too. Not as good of a deal as the 1/2 set, but still, if someone needed an extra 3/8 set, probably worth considering.

Thanks again for the original post.

This stuff is no way in comparasion to Snap-On. These are not highly-polished and the ratchets do not have .00001° swivel capability.

If you work on your car with these tools, it will start falling apart around the sockets and ratchet.

Oh and in. Woot!

What are you talking about? Have you ever even used a ratchet? Sockets dont fall apart? and who compared to snap-on? and what is that angle in referance to? If you meant snap-ons univ. joint angle is .000001 degrees then that would either be straight or a complete U pointing towards the handle....

Laz,

Thanks for the post!

What is Thooks talking about? Is this seriously going to fall apart? I do work on my car a lot and though most of my tools are snapon/craftsman stuff I don't want to waste 50 bucks if this is going to fall apart..lol

Do these have any kind of warranty? If so, what is it? I can't find anything on the sears listing or or Triangles website.

I received my kit today. Wow is all I have to say. This is a very nice set of sockets, the ratchet is nice, all of it is. If the finish was bright, polished chrome, these could be selling for twice the price, easily.

I am going to recommend a few a my friends get one of these if they need one. I appreciate the OP tipping us off, I now have a nice set of 1/2" metric sockets with nice accessories...it will keep my inherited 1/2" drive SAE set from SK company.

I don't disagree that a lot of people look for the polished finish, but personally I really like the satin / matte finish - I'd take it over polished, but maybe that's just me :D
