Bug nest in attic space

Doing some electrical cleanup in the attic and saw a mound in some of the insulation. This was what was inside the mound, a bunch of cacoons or egg sacks. Nothing around the area (wood, drywall) seemed to be damaged and I couldn't find any other signs. There were no large bug carcasses in the area either, but there did seem to be very very tiny empy bug shells inside the sacks, but very hard to tell.

Anyone have any idea what the heck these are?

Definitely not acorns, insect of some kind. Someone mentioned bumble bees and they look similar to pictures of them.

Looks like what bees or hornets leave around. Clear it out and spray the area with wasp spray for further deterrent.

Are they hard or soft? If you break them open, is there anything in them? Is there evidence of water entry?

Bat guana? Mud daubbers?

See what being energetic and wanting to improve things does?

You found a bumble bee nest. Can't tell from the pic conclusively, but it doen't look active. Where I live these are commonly found in the ground at the edge of bushes, flower beds, wooded areas. I have found some that are as large as a soccer ball.

Instead of expensive bug spray, I use brake parts cleaner to kill any insect I want to do in. It much cheaper and it kills them so fast its really remarkable. Just be careful where you spray it for the usual reasons.

I did a google image search and sure enough you're right. I've never seen on before, they are pretty creepy.

Same here, I had no idea those big yellow fuzzy guys are actually called bumble bees.

I've seen plenty of bumble bees, but the nests are a new one to me.
