Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Here's a quick one of mine - a vintage Powr-Kraft radial dp. It's perfect for my little setup, and in very good working order:

dp.jpg

I also have an old Atlas bench top that is going to get a good going-thru this winter. More to come on that one when I get going on it...

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

all these restored Dunlop bench top presses are making me jealous. Maybe its time to give mine some lovin'.

Does anyone know a good source for parts on these? mines missing the depth stop bar and starting to get a little sloppy in the spindle bearings. are the bearings replaceable or even serviceable?

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Okj Bill started a thread to show off his new Buffalo drill press and Jabberwoki insisted we start a new thread to show off our cool " old " drill presses . Soooo I will kick it off with my 1959 Craftsman 15" floor model I picked up yesterday and will toss in a few pics of the 1959 Craftsman Bench lights I picked up at the same time :D.

Rick

I've the exact same one but a bit older. I have something I'm not seeing on any of the other examples, the optional infinitely variable speed drive. An adjustment knob on the top allows varying speed across the full range without changing belts or pulleys. Change speeds as you are working.

Oh, should I mention this unit is still being used in a production environment on a regular basis? Yep, it drills many hundreds of holes every week.

Is yours a Craftsman, or a Dunlap? they made these with all sorts of different bearings.

This one had bronze bushings and should be replaceable if you can get the correct size replacements.

OK,
One more I paid for recently but haven't picked up yet. This is a Dumore "Sensitive" drill press. It is a drill used by jewelers to drill very small holes accurately. Speeds up to 20,000+ for very small diameter drill bits. Paid $35. See online for hundreds.

Anyone else use one of these?

It looks almost exactly like the one on the right. (picture from widerbergs post) The main difference being the colour, mine is grey. I also see now that there probably never was a depth stop bar.

As far as being a dunlop pr c'man. The nameplate on the front (like the one below) says Dunlop but on other markings (the motor iirc) there is mention of craftsman.

Ok, I'll bite, just to add another touch of old amongst all of these "modern" DPs.

DSCN2584.jpg

19-teens 10" Buffalo I found in the shed on my brother's farm when he first bought it. I actually stubbed my toe on the top inch of it that wasnt buried in the dirt. It has since been "restored" by me. Unfortunately I dont have an assembled pic of it, and its still in NY.

DSCN2603.jpg

Almost finished.

1109092052a.jpg

~1900 Wescott drill chuck. Very much pre-Jacobs and fully functional/restored. I need to make a MT1 arbor for it to fit the Buffalo.

DSCN3624.jpg

A project that I am being rather slow with finishing. 1952 Bport round ram w/J-head, one of the earliest w/the J from what I can find. Its currently the only "DP" in my Indiana garage as Ive been moving west for about a year now.

My oldie...

I'd get a pic of mine, but it looks exactly like this one, cept for mine being a floor model.

Works great, and still is running with the original motor, date stamped 2/56.

These often got sold without motors, or the motor was sold separately, and I could see them supplying a Craftsman motor on the Dunlap. I was not sure they badged motor's Dunlap, so I checked, and yes the bronze bushed motors were badged Dunlap. (Craftsman would be an upgrade)

If this 1954 ad matches yours, (it may not, they made these for years and years) then you are still looking at bronze bushings. any matching oil-lite bearing will also do fine, assuming the shaft is in good condition.

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Interesting thread! It isn't an exactly a "seen one, seen them all" kind of thread, right?

I just bought this pre-1947 Walker-Turner a couple of weeks ago and needs to be restored after I hunt down a top cap, table and base plate (and the money to buy them). :)

The red info label indicates a pre-1947 model while they were unowned by other companies.

You may know this already Steve, but that is part of a production drill press, not intended to have either a base plate or table. Gangs of these were bolted to a common table or part of another industrial line machine by the four bolt holes at the bottom of the column, then multiple spindles were used by a single operator. Some have managed to convert these into standard light drill presses, but for the money I think you would be better off buying another WT drill that is complete already. You could also simple mount that on a bench and use it the way it is as well.

There is a complete setup here http://auctions.machinesused.com/listings/details/index.cfm?itemnum=846976423

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Outlawmws, I think that may be the model. Well with the exception of the two motor options you mentioned. Gauging by the dates on the motor I would venture to guess it may be the original mounted one. Being in Canada the Westinghouse motors may have been more common, heck this one was probably manufactured not more that 6km from where I live now.

Anyways on with the pics of it. In the pic with the spindle pulley removed the collar around the spline that it attaches to seems to have a lot of play, almost 3/8" up and down when the splindle is lowered. Is this something that should need some attention, or is it just part of the design for the pulley to ride atop of the top bushing?

If I'm following you, the splined drive collar, moves up and down in the bronze bushing? that "backlash" may be settable depending on where the pulley is cinched down on it, and would not be a critical issue even if it is a bit sloppy up and down

What really matters on a DP is the spindle run out on its bearings, (Don't expect machine shop tolerances from bronze bushings) and the quill in he housing.

Once that is good to go, getting it perpendicular to the table is your next concern, at least if you want holes to be perpendicular...

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Thanks for clearing this up. I have set the pulley down so that there's almost no backlash (~20-30mils), things seems to run fine this way. Regarding making the column plumb Im going to start another thread for this, I have some larger, drilling machine issues to address.

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Here are mine. I have a total of $150 for the 3 of them, some folks just do not appreciate old iron.

First one was a Beaver 13 bench top model ($60):

Then came the Canadian Buffalo 15 floor model($30!!):

Then the last I picked up, had no need for it but could not resist, Beaver 16 Floor model ($60):

Here's my late 40s Craftsman. Bought it from a son cleaning out his father's shop. Paid $70 for it off of CL about 2-3 months ago. I did a little cleanup, but it could use a new set of bearings on the pulley.

I sincerely didn't know that, thanks. But I suspected it. I did know it was modified. I jumped on it though when I saw it going for $60 (paid $50), with the red info label. I haven't seen them up for sale around here until recently so I guess people are letting loose of their "dream projects" for actual cash in hand. I think I'll look around to see what I find though before I decide whether to part it out or restore it. I'll weigh my options.

But hey, most of the fun is restoring them. :)

Thanks,
Steve

Rick has already seen it but the rest haven't. I grabbed a 1953 Delta Homecraft 11-120 11" drill press for $65 on Saturday.

Clausing 15" VS Drill Press

I picked up this Clausing 15" VS model 1673 drill press a little over a month ago from a CL ad. I called Clausing to aquire a manual/parts pdf for it and they emailed it along with the vintage date: 1974. The PO stated he had it in his basement for over 30 years and purchased it from the widow of the previous PO for a few hundred dollars.

Purchased it for $100, but also got a Milton vise with it. While trying to negotiate a lower price with no luck, I asked the PO to throw in the pencil sharperner that was mounted to the wall.

DSC_6733.jpg
DSC_6732.jpg

The POs wife was so impressed with my 1 & 3 year old boys that I had to take with me, that she gave me, um them, about $75-$100 worth of lego blocks. They had just purchased it for their grandchildren at Christmas but no longer play with it.
DSC_6730.jpg

My wife says the kids got the better end of the deal. I say I have to clean up lego blocks all over the house now.

Here are a few pics of my two Deltas. The beige is a pre-war machine. It's a little noisy but still good. The 600 has nearly no run-out and needed very little to be put back into service.
