I am having an issue with a Clopay spade handle set getting installed on a garage door with 30" of lift.

The handle protrudes 1.5" out from the door and it hitting the framing before the door comes back into the garage along the track.

Does anyone know where I can get a matching handle(s) that don't stick out so far?

I don't want to have to start welding/fabricating handles....

Thanks
Mike

First, I'll stick to the question at-hand-
Cabinet handles that look almost exactly like that have a 7/8" projection but are obviously smaller in scale(1st pic)
Another suggestion- pull rings in wrought iron probably about a 3/4-7/8" profile (2nd pic)
And my third suggestion- stretch out the handle to give it a smaller profile.

From experience- I had a similar problem with a H/O. I had my garage door guy come out and adjust the track and door so it would clear the header trim. And when I say clear, it cleared by a gnat's *** hair- but it did the job.

Even with the garage door track adjusted, it will not clear...if we move garage door back anymore, the gasket around the jamb wont be doing it's job.

Knocker would be an option, but really would like to find a solution on handles.

Those handles aren't a problem with a regular lift/track- Mike's using a 30" high lift (in his OP) and generally large profile handles won't clear the header trim.

That is about as low profile as you will find those handles. How far are you from being able to clear the handles? How tall is the door, and where on the door do you want to put the handles? The lower on the door, the better. There are some things you can do with the track to get you more clearance, but depending on how it is put together, may require a decent amount of work. This problem is nothing new. Even on standard lift doors, this has to be done sometimes to clear trim that gets applied to the front of the door.

Hmmm, I guess I'm not understanding what he's needing then. :dunno:

He needs handles that will clear the frame of the door/house. Imagine lifting your garage door straight up from the floor, without having it roll back along the tracks over the bay of the garage. Or imagine the tracks over the bay being several feet higher off the floor. If the handles stick out too far, they're going to hit the top part of the garage door frame.

Well hell, that's what I thought was going on. Have you emailed Clopay to see if they carry anything that doesn't stick out as far and would gain clearance ?

I would think if they build a door like that, they would carry handles to clear.

Or better yet, call Clopay. Call their home office in Mason, Ohio or their plant in Troy, Ohio. I hate waiting for big companies email responses from some clueless, pencil pushing, dolt.

No other handles are available.

What we do in this situation: re-do your high lift so the splice between the vertical track and the highlift track is lower. This will kick the sections back away from the opening at a lower point; if done correctly the handles will clear the header.

How about a recessed handle? Not knowing the style and layout of your doors, it's tough to recommend. Are the doors flush or paneled? Hollow core metal, or wood? If space is there, and the door is hollow, you can use handles meant for road cases, the type used in performing arts (bands, plays, circuses, etc). These are durable as hell, can be painted to match, and sit almost flush. But these will not work if your have a raised panel style door and the handle is in the middle of the stile or rail, unless it is wider than about 4 inches.
