This thing!

I was searching for some other stuff and came across this bad boy. I immediately thought of y'all.

Yup, chainsaw blade for an angle grinder. Apparently woodcarvers who think a regular chainsaw is too safe swear by it. I am EXTREMELY not interesting in buying one, but if y'all are interested, here's the manufacturer:

Yup... 10,000 rpm chainsaw blade. :3gears: Made in USA. (****, like anybody else would think of something like this. A "Hey y'all, look at this!" invention if I ever saw one)

It looks like it would be great for...

...very skinny trees?

I guess it's good for chainsaw carvers.

I think one of the doofuses on extreme home screw-up once tangled with that critter on a show. He had guard removed or was using it holding with one hand only. something really stupid -- and it bit him. That kind of tool has a very high mangle factor and should not be used by anyone whose knuckles drag on the ground. Unfortunately, those are the very types attracted to said tools.

That tool looks absolutely good for notching!

When I was building log houses I always wanted one of those with a gang head that had 5 or 6 of them together that fit on the end of a chain saw bar.

One thing I don't like is there is no way to tighten the chain as it stretches.

The Arbortech head would would great for notching. The cutting teeth are replaceable too.

They have them at Harbor Freight. My buddy put one on his air grinder. It's pretty sweet, and really tears through wood, but definitely a little sketchy.

I used one for a hollowing job, believe me it is scary. But it worked like a charm. We wore welding gloves, but it felt as safe as the router with 3" of spiral bit sticking out we were using before the carver showed up.

porphyre; Congratulations for finding the only device in the world that would make me PUT THE GUARDS BACK ON MY GRINDERS!!:D

As Jack said, I can't see who'd need one of those except for the wood carving folks.

Um, you do realize a lot of chainsaws are 2stroke and rev in this range or higher, right?

That's the engine revs, not the chain revs. A grinder is direct drive. If a standard 15" bar saw has a chain with an overall length of 20", 10,000 chain revs/minute would result in a saw speed of over 16,000 fpm.

I've got the one that was pictured above, and those teeth are sharpenable with a chainsaw file.
They make a better one which takes indexable carbide teeth for those who are really serious about it.

I can't wait for this thing to make an appearance in a horror movie!

It reminds me of the blades you can get for your weed trimmers, they are basically a circular saw attached to your weed whacker. Never ever feel safe using one.

If that thing had a handle like a chainsaw I'd buy one. You need to be able to bear down on the cutting action so your hand should almost be over and behind the cutter. The trigger should be on the bottom at the back like a chain saw too. Then you could stabilize it.

However If you really work it in hardwood or dirty wood the chain will stretch. Without a means to tighten the chain you will have to discard it before the teeth are wore out. If the chain is too slack it can buckle up and the chisel cutting tooth will be too high above the raker tooth in front of it in that buckled up position. It will then grab too deep a bite and kick back making it difficult to do nice smooth work (and hold).

I had a 280 husky chain saw that used to wind out to 11,000 rpms. Most others would only pull up to the 8 - 9000 range at the time. That saw just screamed and it lasted a long time too.

I watched a woodcarver use one of these. Far more controlled than a chainsaw even with a dime bar, and fast. I could see it used in timber framing for hogging out dadoes and notches. For the record, the carver did NOT have a guard on the grinder. He did have leather gloves on, though.:shocking:
