If we knew what this was in laymans terms, you might get some more responses. There are others on this board who are "search wonders". They love a good challenge, just need a bit more to work with.

I think that's about the best you're going to get. I think we pay between $70 and $80 from our jobber. Gives us a little break if we buy 5 boxes at a time.

At my work we where paying $75 for 50 and where going thru about 15-20 a day so we ended up ditching them and putting the reg cup back on and havent had any probs the last 6 months. Takes a bit longer to clean the gun after but with the cost saveings it works out cheaper.

When the liners came out... heck, it must be all of 10 years ago isn't it??

I asked how this is going to save money.

Labor they told us. My techs didn't like it but I said "they are on commission!"

Now that I am self employed, I still haven't re-ordered my "intro pack". 10 minutes cleaning my gun is priceless. (unless someone else is footing the bill)

koditten, they are quick connect cups/liners for spray guns. Great for a quick fender/door/etc paint, but useless for anything more than that.

Sure they save some time, but who is paying for the liners??? As a commission tech not paying for them it makes sense. For the owner buying the liners I don't see the savings.

If you are painting 4-5 cars a day you are saving 20 minutes.

Kinda winging the math here but if you are at 30% commission at $45.00 hour rate you are making $13.50 an hour. 20 minutes of time is $5.40.

4 liners at $1.55 each is $6.20 (based on $77.50 a box of 50)

I was in the booth taping up a car and thought about this some more.

I forgot to factor in paint thinner for clean up, but since you have to wash the gun anyway, what does it really take to wipe down a cup???

My paint jobber was just here and 3M is running a "special" right now. (the special is buy 10 cases and get 1 free... ya, great deal....)

16000 Std lids and liners (50 in a case) for 98.76
16024 Lrg lids and liners (25 in a case) for 65.79

Going back to my previous math, that means that they are $1.98 each or $7.92 if you spray 4 cars a day. Your salary didn't increase :lol_hitti

For what im doing i like the ease of it , ill spend more time just cleaning the gun and not having to do the cup is a plus in my book, just like at home why grab a good plate and have to unload more dishs from the washer when i can just use a paper plate and toss it and only have to clean the fork:)

ok so i got the 3m pps sytem today. the 16000 kit. Now i am spraying for the first time with a devibiss flg4. I thought i had ran out of paint so i went back over to remove the cap and fill it back up and there was an ounce of paint left in the gun when i poured it back into a measuring cup.
So i tried it again this time when i thought i was out of paint i removed the air hose and let the liner open up a little and then i was able to spray some more paint. did this a few times and still had some paint left in the cup.....

Any ideas. Also anyone familiar with materpro Red oxide laquire?

I got a trial 3m pps with my gun, but it was cheaper to buy the adapter and go with the devilbiss setup.

I can't really see an advantage of one over the other. As a complete hobby painter it saved me a lot of time. No way I can clean a gun in 10 minutes - it was taking 20-30 and always made a big mess.

With the paint system it now takes 5 minutes to clean the gun, plus I can spray upside down.

I am paying about 97$ for 50 lids and liners for the 25 oz kit. I think 25 or 24 oz. I also have the zip lock bag type kit that I am going to try also. A friend bought it but never used it so I thought I might give it a try. I have heard alot of people say it works very well. And with the cost being about 70 cents vs about 2$ per liner and lid now I'd be willing. What kind of cost you have on the devilbiss system?

There are few places where cost savings comes in, the time it takes to clean the cup and then amount of thinner you use when you are doing said cleaning, the thinner isnt that expensive but it is the cost of the hazardous waste removal that is expensive. Last time we checked here having a 53 gallon drum removed was over 700 dollars and that was over five years ago.

as far as the commision goes, around here if you are not a 200% tech you probably want to find different line of work all together, if all your bosses havent fired you yet, so you should look at that number and probably double it

Body shops are production businesses, you want to keep your techs moving on work.

Also when a boss/manager figures that cost equation, its not about what the shop makes or the tech makes, it is what the value is to the shop. The PPS cups arent "cheap" but they often make sense in the long run, for a production shop.

I work for a bodyshop jobber and actually thinner costs and waste, as Ronny stated is where you save money with PPS. We sell them to probably 95% of the legitimate shops that we service. When they first came out, 3M had a disc and would record the guys in the shop and the amount of thinner, time and product waste in their actual shop. A quart of thinner, extra product mixed and thrown out, time, waste disposal added up to more than the cost of the lid and liner. They have other benefits as some mentioned, being able to spray upside down, eliminating the use of mixing cups (less product waste), not having to strain (less product waste) being able to cap and save product for an amount of time , etc. The less you have to transfer product from mixing cup to strainer to gun cup, out of the gun cup, the less product you have to mix up and you have the potential to save on product usage also.

That being said, there is not a lot of markup made on supplies. $70.00 is probably the best price you will find.

This is an interesting old thread, have things changed since the last post? Is the 3M PPS 2.0 system the best in terms of efficiency/versus cost or is there a better option now?
