Lol...that guys been pricing SO stuff like that for ages. If you check his feedback it seems he's gotten his asking price a few times. He's just preying on the lazy and the stupid.

Or Australians where prices are far higher then US MSRP.

I guess Australians can be lazy and stupid as well. So can the Japanese where the retail prices are crazy also. There are far better (and fair) deals on those type items all over eBay by sellers that will ship worldwide. His listings are quick and easy as they're BIN. Hey, more power to the guy if he's pulling it off!

they're on sale. But I agree: buyer beware. I've seen ratchets go for $50 over the truck price (plus shipping). I don't get it.

Better yet, buy the Sears prybar sets. Exact same Mayhew prybars that SO sells with somewhat different grips on them. Sears has a 5 pc set with striking caps on the hard/soft handles for anywhere from $50 on sale up to regular price, which is way under a hundred, brown box, internet orders only, not in the store. Why would you buy the Snap-On?

I just sent the seller a kind email saying I was interested but curious as to the differences between these and the ones on my local truck.

I cant wait to see what BS the seller comes up with..

I don't really see the big deal. He ships for free, and some people prefer buying off eBay with PayPal.

What's sleazy about that?.. he isn't lieing. He probably isnt really that motivated to sell.
There's a "make an offer" type auction, so he's probably going to sell for less if he does move it.
And as others have pointed out, you can get it for less if you shop around.

I guess some people think making a profit is sleazy.

You should go hang out at your local incarnation of Occupy Wall Street. You will find a lot of like minded clueless people that will agree with you.

I think some people here are too worried that some fraud is getting past them on eBay/CL. This isn't the first time someone has been up in arms with a seller overpricing on both, and there are some armchair CL flaggers here.

Yes we are lazy and stupid. We will pay $300 (around $320US) for a glorifed Stanley made in taiwan socket set,

That said my snap on bloke is one of the few retailers that don't charge me for my left testicle ontop of whatever the product sells for in America (probably because its already overpriced in America). I could find out next week but I should be able to get that prybar set for less than $255. A few of his things have actually been cheaper than what I could find an equivalent product for at the shops, like my snap on soldering torch. I bet that never happens in America, where its cheaper to buy from the snap on truck

BigGus, it's time to stop and ask yourself a few questions.
1. is he deceiving or misrepresenting anything?
2. does he give a **** about a nasty gram?
3. is it really anyone elses business except the buyers?

More power to him. He isn't hurting me or anyone else for that matter.

With the internet, surprise people don't check or compare price. Isn't Snap On doing the same thing. Selling other brand tools for way over listed price.

Sleezebag Ebayer selling Snap-On pry bar set for $255. MSRP is only $170.

Some (apparently) other guy doing the same thing was a total dirtbag and douchebag. I was looking at an item a few weeks ago, and I couldn't believe the price was higher than the SO Web site. (My dealer often gives me better prices than the site!) So I messaged him real quick: "The price of the item is higher than the Snap-On Web site." Well, guess what? That one sentence wound up his ******* so tight he wrote me a 200 word response that called me an ignorant a-hole.

I also noticed in his feedback that one customer had the bad experience of receiving counterfeit tools.

When on Ebay, check Web prices before buying, and beware of the rip-off artists.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if someone calls someone else an "ignorant a-hole" because they didn't like the price and felt the need to email about it....they might just be right.

There is the option of "offer" and that is the correct way to assert your opinion of value.

Kind of like if I see you have a for sale ad for your house, and come over just to tell you your price is too high or a rip-off w/o any intention of purchasing. Yes, the assertion of "ignorant *******" is well deserved at that point.

How is this sale any different than those who purchased the Knipex plier sets for discount at Lowe's than sold them here for a profit

having looked at the auction, it appears to me that everything is legit.

so if someone pays that amount, the seller is a douche?

does this not fall under the category of "capitalism"?

if the actual product was a fake, then yeah, i'd agree.

if i had a nickel for every "look at what i scored on craigslist/garage sale/estate sale for 20 bucks!", only to see it later posted in a for sale section for 10 times that.

That is a very good point. If you are going to resell, don't brag about how cheap you got it. Profit is not a dirty word.

My apologies if you thought I was calling all australians lazy and stupid. That wasn't my intent. My point was that there are people all over the world that fall for these high prices simply because of convenience and because they don't check what the retail of the items are. I kow a couple guys that have shipped Snappy stuff to Australia, Japan, europe, etc for the same price as someone in North america would expect to pay for it on Ebay. The shipping was a little higher but the total cost for the item was bearable. But the fact is, no matter how good of a deal you think you got on an item, there'll always be someone that will tell you that you got ripped off and that they got the same item for $3 at a pawn shop or swap meet. the trick is to get the best bang for your buck and there's a lot better bang for the buck to be had in many different places on the internet.
I never agreed that this guy was a scumbag. I simply stated (maybe worded it wrong) that his business seems to be based on people not doing their homework and not being aware that they're paying way more than they should for a given item. But, I suppose one could argue that buying from the tool truck or SO's website is the same. Anyways, those were the points I was trying to make. as I stated before, if he can get people to buy his goods for those prices, more power to him!

BTW I'm in Canada and we pay on average 10-15% more than the US people pay off the truck for a lot of items and i've never seen any such thing as a $99 deal on a set of prybars here either so I feel your pain on the high retail.

That^ about sums it up for me.

So, Snap On buys the same basic prybar from Mayhew? adds slightly different plastic grips and a HUGE amount onto the pricetag.

Then the Ebay seller adds a bit onto the price as well and he's the one in the wrong?

I believe its called Capitalism and even the Russians are doing it now.

Perhaps is some people weren't so damned obsessive compulsive about having a particular brand of tools (no matter what company actually makes them in the first place) they wouldn't throw as much money away needlessly.

A little off topic, but those prybars looks like the ones the sell at Harbor Freight for $7

The only difference I see are the red handles. Maybe that's why they cost 2400% more? :headscrat

I have both and the Snap On handles to me are worth the extra money as they look and feel great.

Ebay has always had its own value for items that don't reflect what the item sells for elsewhere. There was a time where the Yankee bits for the old push drills would routinely sell for $45 while you could get the drills with bits for $20.

By all means go buy one. If the purpose is to use it, you will report back about them sucking. If the intended purpose is to prove the "tool snobs" wrong, you will come back with a highly positive review.

I have one (HF) modified for a specialty purpose. It is not suitable for the actual kind of prying I typically do, but serves it's specialty purpose well enough. It has a groove cut out in the middle, to form a "fork". I did that with the sole intention of repairing HD truck breaks. I smack the prybar which pops off the brake shoe springs, use it to pry off the shoes, and then use it to stretch the new springs.

As far as actual prying, it certainly is not worth a ****. Definitely not worth it if it requires some hammering. Bends real easy, too much flex, tip is easily damaged.

Then there is a certain comfort or ergonomic factor, definitely lacking there.

Luckily, I do not need to use it for more than a few minutes at a time, and for relatively low stress use.

That^ about sums it up for me.

So, Snap On buys the same basic prybar from Mayhew? adds slightly different plastic grips and a HUGE amount onto the pricetag.

Actually, it hasn't been confirmed yet. The only thing that has been confirmed is they both sell prybars. It HAS been speculated, and IS quite possible.

I used to do this on remote control trucks most were listed as discontinued, but they were still readily available on the open market. It was before Christmas and I listed one at $625 the original list price was $399 my price was $300. During the auction I had someone ask me to sell it at $500 but I said I would like to wait the auction out and see what the market would bring. Well he emailed back that his final offer was $525. I politely declined saying I was trying this auction no matter what. Well, he went off the deep end. He told me he was turning me into Ebay and that he had offered a more than fair price and I was trying to screw him over. I told him he was no longer allowed to bid on my items, he replied back that he would ruin all my future auctions unless I accepted the $525. Ebay gave him a warning and I sold the RC truck for $625. So what if I a making money, it is up to the buyer, it isn't like ebay was spamming them trying to trick them to buy something. The buyer searches this item out or stumbles on it, the seller is doing nothing wrong so I say drop it.

I might have to send this A-hole a nasty-gram.

Here's a novel idea: if you don't like the asking price of an item then don't buy it.

The last sentence of your post says more about you as a person than it does about the guy with the overpriced items.
