Time to retire my NAPA spark plug sockets they have seen better days the rubber is now swollen and it becoming difficult to take the socket out even with a little lube. Does anyone use any of the S/O plug sockets that uses retention, instead of the rubber boots? Anyone have any other plug sockets they like and always reach for?

I have the retention set from Snap on. It was on sale. They're ok but, it's like anything else when you want the socket to let go it won't. Sometimes it takes a little wiggling. I still find myself reaching for old SK, Mac and Snap on versions because they have more knurling for finger spining and let go of the spark plug easier but there's no rubber insert to lose, wearout, or get damaged. You might be able to get new neoprene inserts for your old plug sockets.

yes, it is happen to my tech friend with craftsman spark plug while he lost rubber insert inside so he just put rubber hose in. no problem since he use it...

I always use Matco tool extra deep spark plug because it had best knurling top of spark plug which good for me to do start plugs in....

Most of Chrysler and Jeeps are use deep well of spark plugs... I paid 20 dollars for matco tool extra deep spark plug socket while my matco tool guy mistype in wrong number that price for orignal spark plug socket... so i paid him a cash and walk out.... (it is really price is 42 dollars or little more while i bought it like 3 or 3 1/2 years ago.... i still had him stop by my work which is his local to sell matco tools...)

Most plugs are 5/8, so in that size I have 4....

Matco 6 inch Deep
Snap On deep swivel impact
Husky and Craftsman Regular plug socket

The deep socket is my go-to both at home and at work.

I've only ever owned craftsman spark plug sockets, as well as one chicom one that got in there. The cman is much better, but it's time to replace the rubber. I was thinking about getting the whole set of cmans, as I only have the 5/8 right now, and the whole set is only 20 bucks. Does anyone know if cman, or a place with comparable price/quality/made here have deep plug sockets? I could really use one on my familys pontiac transport, the thing is nearly impossible to work on.

Next time I see my Snapon guy I am getting one of these, FSX1226, its a 12" extension with a 13/16 swivel plug socket. Not made anymore I don't think, but turns up used often enough. More common is the FSX626 6" version.

You know I don't even use spark plug sockets; I just use regular deep sockets. I know that sounds boring, but I just break them loose and then spin them out by the knurled part of the extension in my finger tips. I'd get a spark plug socket if I needed one of those swivel jobs though.

Get the magnet plug sockets and you will never use anything else. The best set I have found (don't laugh) are the Duralast branded ones at autozone. The base magnet is much larger and a better design that tool truck ones I have seen.

I really like my matco's. The retention with the rubber insert is very positive but not excessive like C'mans. They feel much better then SKs too. As for snap on, never tried them but I don't think I'd care to with the matcos.

That only works if you're working on a v engine, and you can get to them with your hands. An inline 4 though, forget it, the plugs are way deep in the block. Though I can see that method being useful in some applications.

You have to go through deep tubes on my Intrepid to get to the plugs (oh yeah, its a V), so I just use a regular 5/8's deep socket with a small wad of duct tape in it. To get the duct tape out, I just blow through the drive hole. Works every time, and duct tape is always convenient as it can be used to fix damn near anything.
