Excuse me while I wax nostalgic...

This is me and my first box setup, circa 1975

Meandcraftsmanboxcirca1975.jpg

Same box today.

IMAG0704.jpg

I've kept it because it still functions as it should and I've been planning on refurbishing it for a while now. Also always thought I'd give it to one of my sons, but they've got their own now so who knows. They love it when I point out a tool they're using or borrowing has been a part of my life longer than they have. (They're adults and dads themselves).

I've had several boxes since, some still, others gone. It's currently tasked with holding basic non-woodworking hand tools in the wood shop. Not sure what I'll use it for in the future, but after all this time, I'm sure I'll have it till I'm gone. (BTW, I expect that to be a while, I'm making myself sound older than I am, I'm only 18 in the pic)

PS: The vega was fitted with a small block, muncie w/lakewood scatter shield and a narrowed 12 bolt. Wish I'd have know someone like Hotchkis back then, cause the wheel hop was a *****. Still popped the front wheels though. :rocker:

Is it too late to join the party? Just snagged a 1979 SO KR-537A this afternoon, complete and unrestored. I'm not sure if it's worth the bother to clean it up or just use it as-is. Probably not a "you ****" deal but I am pleased with it!

Pardon the emergency clutter in the background. I had to scramble to make a little room for this thing.

A couple Craigslist finds, the first is a Huot early to mid 60's combo, the intermediate chest is actually a base unit without the casters. Belonged to a jeweler. The other is an older Sears/Craftsman box that I couldn't resist. If anyone has any information on the Huot combo, I'm all ears.

Found it here: http://eugene.craigslist.org/tls/2641390913.html

Seems like a good deal on a cool box, nice score
From the pics I'd leave it as is

The only thing I know about that Huot is that is one cool looking stack

I think I'll just pull off the decals, polish it up, and call it good. Slides and liners are all in great shape, so I'm happy. The local SO rep just had a KR557 last week but thinks the buyer may trade it in next spring. Know when to say when...

Here's mine, inherited them from my grandfather, full of tools, and will never sell them. Craftsman top and bottom, Remline top and bottom with a craftsman intermediate chest. These boxes have a special place in my heart, Two new boxes later and I still would prefer to use these over new ones.

I've shown some of these separately elsewhere, but this seems like their home.

I don't actually have a lot of use for all these, but they seem to follow me home!

The PowerKraft stack came filled with tools. It's in need of some TLC, but is (mostly) square and solid. The top box is noticeably heavier than a 1983-vintage Waterloo of similar configuration I have. The bottom box is in worse shape, but I think I can make it at least functional again. If I keep it, the set will likely end up in the basement.

The Park is a cantilever box I picked up at an estate sale for about $5 filled with household electrical materials. It works great and I think needs only a good cleaning. Was brown the original color for these?

Finally, I couldn't resist this Williams. It's in decent shape-will probably need painting at some point to prevent rusting, and the tray will need some straightening. I thought the socket slots in the bottom were an interesting touch. I noticed that both this and the Park have their handles riveted to the undersides of their respective lids-I can see where it would strengthen the boxes at a manufacturing cost penalty.

The Huot stack is what they called a Converta-Chest, Model 285. It was a modular design intended to be used with or without the casters. I have a catalog sheet for them, never saw one before though, very nice.

Howdy,

Here is mine, I found it on a street corner when I was 19. It has recessed casters and doesn't roll that well but I still use it everyday at work. It was originally made by the "Shelley Manufacturing Company" and if I had to guess I think it's of 50's or 60's manufacture. I took this crappy pic at my work the other day but enjoy.

Just picked up this Craftsman combo at an estate sale for $125. They are in great shape!

So anyways the 3 drawer roller box is model number 65033 with a date of 10 1974 and the top is 65272. As far as condition they are as I said super nice. One small drawer in the top has rust from what appears to be a corrosive chemical spill. The casters are the wrong ones and smaller than original. It came with all the keys and two owners manuals. The keys have the Craftsman Crown logo. All the drawers work great, no signs of overloading. The emblems are in gorgeous shape. This should be a fairly simple clean, treat the rust in the one drawer and wax it.

I had forgotten all about this thread. Picked up this Proto box a couple weeks ago on CL for $50 :bounce:
SAM_0326.jpg

Need to get a pic of it in the garage with my Craftsman top and mid boxes on top of it at some point. Not too pretty and the slides ****, but they'll definitely get the job done for years to come. Now just need to find a decent side box...

Wow... that is in great shape, even the manuals (and vintage wiring book). Congrats on a great score

Here is the newest addition to the 1950s Craftsman Garage family:

pc100784.jpg
pc100790.jpg

See bottom left tool chest, 1957 catalog:

1957toolbox2.jpg

And

pc100786g.jpg

See right rolling cart, 1957 catalog:

1957toolbox1.jpg

And together:

pc100783.jpg
pc100787.jpg
pc100788.jpg
pc100791.jpg
pc100792.jpg

Apparently this was the top of the line model, as noted in the Craftsman catalog. You can tell the different by the size of the casters - their 'best quality' ones as they say had the 4" casters, whereas others they made had 3".

Too be honest, I'm just super glad to have found one, any one:)

Feel free to read up more about this find here:

My Snap-On box...

attachment.php

I believe it is from sometime in the 80's due to the PO saying he bought it when he entered the field as a diesel mechanic... the guy is about 45 or so now, so assume about 20-25 years ago as the purchase year range...

It's got a very distinctive gash in the lower portion of the right side of the box from a guy at his work dropping something real heavy (probably a transmission) onto it. The wood top is a huge bonus... got it and the box for 600 bucks. Talk about a deal. Ad in the paper, of all places...

It's already loaded full of my tools. And there are still toolboxes and tools laying all over the place... :willy_nil

Two (no, more like ten :lol_hitti) more boxes like this one would probably take care of that minor issue...

I've got some more old boxes around here. Will have to remember to get some pics of them up here sometime.
