Need toolbox

New to this site and I would like suggestions on purchasing a new base cabinet for work. I currently install interiors in private jets so there is not alot of heavy tools, but need more room. We do move our boxes often so it would need good casters. Would like to buy american made but price is a factor as I would like to stay under $1500. Approx size 41" L X 20" D any information would be appreciated.

One of your best sources for a box that size, US made and for a reasonable price is Craigslist or Ebay. I just picked up this Snap on KRL663 that sold for $4400 plus tax ten years ago in very good condition for under a grand. Best bang for the buck I think. Just keep watching daily and when the right deal presents itself jump on it! The box weighs 535 pounds so I paid a local tow company to pick it up and flat bed it the 20 miles to my house for $75.

What he said, I am looking to replace my current box with a Snap, I have too many over loaded drawers and will be venturing into the auto tech trade in a year or so I am waiting for the right box to present itself..

I'm still watching CL, too. Good deals are few and far between in the st. louis area, though. A 10-year-old snap-on roller in these parts brings 2/3 of new. I was at an estate auction a few weeks ago and there was a 56" SO top and bottom there that was at least 20 years old - brought over $3k.

Yup there are a lot of guys out there that buy Snap just so they can say they have a snap on. Weather they use it or not. I know of 3 very nice SO boxes that are seldom used if ever. But what are you gonna do

The old style Husky Pros (cheapest if you can find them, ~$400 for just the bottom) and current Proto, Blackhawk, and MAC boxes are all the same, minus a couple different draw setups and are 41 X 18, made in Canada.

I would stay away from the Craftsman, Husky, and Waterloo boxes since you are going to be rolling it long distances. Their casters do not work that well and tend to get flat spots real easy. I would get a used SO, Matco, or Mac with their middle grade our higher (for caster quality). Also look at the Kennedy boxes, they have some that have HUGE casters that would roll real easy and have the most storage for the price (comparing new boxes) and are made for industrial use. Honestly, kovarkorner, in my opinion, based on the information you gave I think you should look at the Cornwell service carts (700 series)...they are well built (i have the 100 series service cart at work) and reasonably priced. The dimensions are 38.5" wide x 20" deep x 37.375" tall (without casters). The 700 series model sells for right at $1k, the 100 series cart which isnt as tall and doesnt have as many drawers is around $500

But all in all, they roll well, lock, are sturdy, and well priced for comparable boxes from snap on, mac, or matco

OR, you could buy the craftsman, save $2000, buy a $150 set of colson casters and have an extra $1850, and better casters than snap-on, matco, mac. I guarantee my $150 8" colson casters will roll better than your snap-on casters. My box weighs over 2500 lbs, and I can roll over 3/32" rivets, and they won't stick in the wheels, or damage them. In fact, you can't even feel them. I roll over air hoses and power cords all the time with no trouble.

I had a Kennedy box when I was a Tech in a test lab years ago. We had to roll those boxes all over the building to the job and they worked great. Not as heavy-duty as the Snap-on, Mac or Matco, but beefier than the Craftsman. I have one in the garage now. It has a modular drawer system where you can reposition the drawers and upgrade to roller slides because everything is interchangable.

The upgraded caster idea is a good one. Definately something to consider. Good idea nissan_crawler!

the prices arent on the website...i just know from talking to the Cornwell truck guy

oh, and the word from him is that they are coming out with a new service cart/single bay that will be a little bit bigger than that 700 series (6in longer, 5in deeper, 1 or 2 inches taller) that will be really affordable...so i am guessing that if its in line with the 700 and 100 series itll be somewhere in the $1500 range

I second the suggestion on the Waterloo TRX5213. I bought one (Black) about 6 months ago and it's everything I'll ever need (other than the top box that I'll buy this year).

I bought it from the asedeals.com who has the absolute lowest price you'll find and the free shipping is GREAT and the driver even put it in my garage and unpacked it so we could inspect for damage. 7 year warranty...made in the USA. I don't know about the quality of the casters as mentioned above as I don't move mine around but if it became a factor for me I would have no problem replacing the casters with better ones. Just my 2 cents.

I was at a swap meet today, and a guy had a brand new snap-on KLR756 for $600. I should've jumped on it, but instead waited until I was ready to leave to make him an offer - it was long gone.
