Just got my roll cab. I am on a limited budget and was super excited just to get the box. however my imagination kept getting the best of me and I thought of how nice it would be to have a hutch on it. After not seeing any way feasible to acquire one. I thought about building my own. here are a couple photos. of it in progression. I used 2x2 wood and thin plywood sheeting and some pegboard that we had laying around the shop and added a power strip my digital picture frame and cables for my laptop to sit in the middle. I am no carpenter but I am pleased with the result and the total cost which was well under $100.00

Now that's being resourceful! Looks good! Also, the outsides make a great place to put your favorite race part stickers!

I think It came out good. it just site on top of the box as it is held in place by the lip going around the box.

I made it a little higher than i had planned on however i really like not hitting my head on it. It makes my junk on top a little more private. and really shows off the box. which kind of blended in being as short as it was. the clock in side is really nice.

I have a bar magnet up top to keep other commonly used tools.

I plan to find a nice piece of aluminum diamond plate or some toher material other then the crappy HF " mat" that comes glued to the top. granted it is a nicer touch then just a tinny metal top but it ***** plain and simple.

post up your comments, likes, criticisms etc. I welcome any and all feedback

That's being creative ! The fact you were able to increase the height to where it fits you is the really nice part of it. Look into IKEA for a Butcher block top. Best deal anywhere for a Hardwood top

Looks good! How is it secured?

Plans to put some sheet metal doors and a padlock? (or something of that nature)

thest is not really a big concern at our garage. There is only one other tech and he is about 55 with all his own snap on tools. I lock the roll cab at night and that keeps tools from walking off from the other employees but i loan my drill out probably the most. no one else at the shop really needs tools for anything they do.
I piled all my junk on the top so i could not fold a door up over the top. and swinging then out probably is not an option. i think it is about done. I have accomplished what I had set out to do .

as for how it is mounted. the tool box has a lip that runs around the sides and back. the bottom is built to hug tightly on the inside of that lip. it dows not move under its own weight. I have thought that i would have needed to secure it. but my box only moves when i pull it out to sweep or if i take the box and pack up and leave which I can not see happening . so all is good.

Looks great! Only constructive criticism is that I would have used a semi-gloss or an eggshell paint. The gloss looks a little to much...

when seeing the first pics, i was going to call you a "hack".
but after seeing it painted, it doesn't look bad, and kinda cool.

i, myself, started building a type of hutch for my krl761. right now it is just some angle iron and cardboard = mock up. i wanted to get a visual before building it out of metal. in 2 weeks we close on the sale of out home. then i will have some free time. i think this is when i will start construction.

I've ordered butcher block from them before. Their maple tops are all John Boos. I recently bought a 36"x30" piece from them, it came UPS. For a 60"x24" piece you'd need to cut down a bit, I suspect it'd be freight shipping. If you call them, they'll tell you. They answer the phones 7x24. If you have them invoice the freight shipping through them instead of having the shipping company contact you, it's very reasonable.

Motorhead Extraordinaire has a really large selection of USA made Bally Butcher Block as well. Industrial, kitchen, radiused, bullnosed, squared, pretty much anything you want. And I think they'll do custom sizes as well.

Looks pretty good to me! I like that it's functional, and not breaking the bank.

I would say maybe pick up a few pieces of aluminum and brush them. Them mount them around the front lip of it to tie back to the pulls on the box. I think that would tie it together. I am never the less impressed by how well the paint matches.

+1 for Ikea and butcher block...very reasonable prices for high-quality butcher block.

I think I've seen a couple of others buy butcher block tops for benches at Sears.

Came out good. A hutch you want at a price you can afford, what's not to like.

Looks good. The fact that it is wood means it will be easy to add hooks, paper towel roll, shop towel roll and other things to it.
