Testing Flourescent Bulbs

Wife has bunch of bulbs and temprary hanging fixtures for her plants. She hasn't used them in a couple years and I want to clean them up.

Is their a way to test flourecent bulbs without installing them in a fixture?

They do sell a tube tester, a battery powered unit that emits a hi frequency into the tube. Kinda pricey though...

only answers I can give are tube tester ( huge cost ), install in fixture, and then my smart *** answer, put on wool socks, shuffle feet of **** carpet all while holding the tube, when you are sure to give the shock of a life time, have the pins of the lamp digging into your palm, and touch the other end against something grounded, you should get a quick flash of light from the tube, so you know it works. and it does, the things you discover when bored at work.

wonder how many folks here are going to try this, and worse wonder how many are going to make Light sabre sounds doing it.
