I wasn't really looking to buy a new box to replace my old Craftsman, but this deal fell into my lap. A Tech wants to sell his 7 year old MAC Tech 1000, 11-drawer base and 10-drawer top with a 7-drawer side cabinet and full length side cabinet. It has a small dent/scratch in the large base drawer. He wants $3500 for it all, but said he would negotiate lower... I've priced it out new and it adds up to near $11,000!! It's really more box (and money) than I need, but I really like it. Is this a deal I shouldn't pass up or should I wait until I'm really in the market for a box???

I'm really at a loss for what to do. The wife says I can get it, but I know she really doesn't want me to spend the money...

I don't see how you could lose. You could sell that for much more than $3500 on Ebay!!

I would negotiate him to the bottom then buy it ASAP!

Thanks guys. That's making it a little easier for me to take the plunge.

Anyone else have some encouraging or discouraging feed back????

I just need some support on this purchase. As soon as I think "No I'm not going to buy it", all I have to do is look at the pictures and I'm right back with money in hand!

I'm probably over thinking this....

You really have to watch buying big boxes like that. I got a really good deal on a Snap On KRL1003 but after I bought it I realized it is really too big for me. Now it is a pain in my *** to have to move it. Little boxes are nice if you move around a lot like me. If you plan on being in the same place for years buy it and fill it up. Don't buy it though if your going to resell it, big boxes are really hard to sell if you don't live in a big area. Trust me from personal experience in this matter.

I would buy it. I bough a tool box that was too small for me, and now I am in the process of buying another one. It's a very good price on a really nice tool box. You would be surprised how quickly they fill up. I wouldn't hesitate.

It is a pretty sweet box, isn't it!

Do you think I should worry about it being 7 years old and being used every day in a shop environment? Would that put a lot of wear on it?

If you've got the room for it and can afford it, you can't beat that setup for$3500. At 7 years old, it's just getting broken in. Put a coat of wax on it, put your tools in it, and call it done.

The things are made to last a lifetime - just check it out and see what you think.

Personally, I'd be on it faster than Oprah on a glazed ham.

I never cared much for the Tech 1000 series MAC boxes; they just seem so plain and boring to me. I'd much rather have a MACSIMIZER series box. It is a screamin' deal if you like the box though.

the best advise I've gotten on tools is to "grow into them, not out of them". Whenever something like this comes up I look at it as a purchase I hadn't planned on but honestly it's a deal that you won't regret. I got my snap on rolling base top and side cabinet at an auction I went to last summer. Thought "I'd stop and look". Wound up having to call in a favor of a flat bed truck that a buddy of mine owns to get it home. I've never regretted the purchase, although I hadn't planned on it for sure. Do it. You won't be sorry.

FWIW, my 2 cents.

Deals like this don't fall in your lap for the reason to pass! Great box, great price and one that brings a smile every time you use it.

Go get it.... its actually cheaper than $3500 since you can sell your current box, right?

run don't walk away.... it's too much box... it's too much money,... you won't like it... it'll probably make you sick... you'll get a hernia pushing it around.... just give ME his phone number and I"LL call him and give him the bad news ...just Leave it to me... TRUST ME !!!!

really... it's a good deal ... do it or regret it forever.. I'd start with 2500 cash in my hand and work up from there. But, keep the rest in your pocket... green paper in hand is very attractive when negotiating. Saying I'll pay you next payday doesn't have the same magnetism

If the wife says "no", you'd better heed her advice, or else you will be in the dog house..

Personally,I'd wait for a deal on a maximizer; a lot better box..

Looks like a heck of a deal, but if the wife doesnt approve then I'd say dont do it.

Ditto, Wive's are like the genie in the bottle, you only get so many wishes granted, not sure I would use one up on a toolbox I know I don't really need.

heavier guage sheet metal and better casters

I'm thinking the Tech 1000 is a box that MAC makes themselves; and therefore being the same sheet metal thickness as a MACSIMIZER. If I'm wrong, please let me know because I'm curious.

For a few years, Waterloo was supplying some low end boxes to MAC; those boxes definitely had thinner sheet metal.

The Tech 1000 boxes are made in Canada by Stanley, along with the old Husky Pros and the Protos. Some have a couple shallower drawers, but they are the same box.

I've said it a bunch of times, but thats why I think the old Husky Pros are a hell of a deal, $400 for a box someone else is charging $3500 for. I would rather a much deeper box, but some deals are too good to pass.

Got the box in my garage! It's awesome and looks much bigger in my 2-car than it did in the Ford service shop....

The dear wife is also happy with the purchase and with your alls help, has a good appreciation of the deal "WE" got.

He helped me load it, hauled it home and the wife help unload, all without incident. Had to haul it 70 miles to get home and the whole deal took all day, but it was a great day and one I'll always remember.

I'll post some pictures once I get it cleaned up and a good coat of wax on her.

Thanks for all the encouraging replies!
