I couldn't figure out how to edit the title on the original post so I thought I would start a new thread. I did some more work on the vise yesterday and got pretty frustrated. I would like to know what to do about my most current problem. The front of the vise has been messed with so much that it is hard to decide what to do. There is a serious gap in the front so the keeper wont sit flat and looks terrible. The vise works well, but thats about it. One thought is to weld on the front and reshape that it, I even have some cast rod. I just hate to weld on it. I guess I could file it down flat and make make another shim?

I ended up making the keeper out of a piece of 1/4 aluminum I had. I used a hole saw to cut the center out. It worked great. I cut the sides with a jig saw and they look so so. I just don't know what to do next.

Any Ideas Welcome.

I'm confused... you've already got two washers acting as spacers. Why can't you add another one or two?

You could drop it in the mail and I'll face it and re-bore the counterbore for the screw thrust flange. I can also saw out and finish a keeper from steel plate.

It is really hard to see in the pictures, but the front of the vise where the washers sit is really un even. I tried adding washers but then it sticks out to far. It is like putting something flat on a ball.

Thats what I am trying to figure out should I file it down or build it up somehow. Thanks for the help.

I am curious how would you do these things. I am new to metal working and would like to know.

Thanks

I'd use my 1947 Doall V-36 vertical band saw to cut out the keeper and machine your movable jaw and the keeper recess on my Bridgeport milling machine, shown here:

The piece that you made is missing the feet that sit on the casting beside the slide screw's flange. You can see them in the pictures of the original part in your other thread. The piece should have 3 contact points, with the retaining screw between them. Only the top of the retainer should touch the area above the screw. The jaw casting can be tapered away from the retainer so only the top contacts.

I'm working on one, too. I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow.

Here's are some pictures of the 272 I'm working on. There was a lot of wear in the area the screw pushes on, so it was remachined. The through hole was bored for a bushing.
