Tell me about my Blower

picked up a well used snow blower tonight. Mastercraft (Canadian Tire brand) . anyone know about what year it is? might need a carb kit before the snow really starts flying up here so id like to know more about the model of engine. the stickers claim its a 8hp briggs but the motor has been painted i think at one point.

so what do you all think?

I don't know what year it might be but, I'd say just by lookin' it's from the 60's or early 70's................ Built like tank and will last many more winters and this little mod will make it blow like brand new. http://smllengns.tripod.com/

I was looking to buy a new blower before I took a chance and installed this kit on my 25+ year old 10hp Noma .............Wow, what a difference, it at least doubled the throwing distance and has never plugged or burned a belt in 5 years of throwing wet heavy slush and whatever other type of snow that our winters throw at us...................we average anywhere from 10 to 20 feet of snow a year where I live.

Briggs motors last well as long as you check and change oil once in a while...

Most common issues are sheered keys on the flywheel throwing the timing off, (proper torque solves this) points (under the flywheel) and bad/old/dirty gas. Once I had one of the stick carbs get corrosion in the passages that feed fuel, I actually reamed that out and otherwise cleaned the carb and brought it back to life (This is about as primitive a carb there is...)

That looks like a tecumseh tank someone "retrofitted".

Other than that the body looks like a generic build from the 70s used by many other brands as well [Snapper, Simplicity, Craftsman-to name a few]. I think they were manufactured by Murray but am not certain. Really solid design.

make sure to grease the axles and temporarily remove the shear pins and make sure the auger spins freely and is well lubed as well.

also, get extra shear pins before the snow comes,

You're in luck as far as the engine goes, being a B&S parts are plentiful. You can get the correct tank and bracket without problems. Everything else is readily available. Given the age of the engine, I recommend retrofitting a Magnetron (transistorized) ignition for a stronger spark and no need for ignition tuneups in the future. With the 19xxxx engine part number, it is definitely an 8hp (19cu. in.).

I just looked online some and I was mistaken, however Ariens DID rebrand. They made them for IH (Cub Cadet) and Deere back in the day.

Nothing wrong with a breaker ignition system on a snow blower. The points/condesor kit runs ~$10 and would last through hundreds of hours of operation which on that snow blower probably means the rest of its life. If the spark is strong i wouldnt even touch it.
