Gravel road, almost a quarter mile of gravel drive, horses, all this means a lot of dust. Can't stop, just try to keep up with it. Hardest thing is a thorough cleaning after neglecting things for a while. Standard stuff: dust collector for woodworking tools, shop vac, and recirculating air filter on the ceiling (which is very effective). Still a PITA.

I have a cordless leaf blower that works well. Shop air works pretty good too. But like Al's method best!

Stop growing skin, read somewhere that 80% of dust is dead skin and we shed about 6 grams a day.

X3 for the French maid!

Air hose with a long snout. Gets in behind stuff and blows it out onto the middle of the floor. At that point you can either vac it up or blow it somewhere. If you blow it, it seems to find its way back. ;)

I find keeping things off the floor or on wheels so the occasional washdown with water and a sprinkle of Tide. Broom it off and rinse. Air just seems to make half of it airborn.

I hate the leafblower route. It's just taking dirt/dust and moving it from here to there.

Plus, if you have painted drywall, it's just going to stick to the walls.

+1 on leaf blower. My table saw and miter saw are portable so I move them outtside the garage door. When done I blow the tools and concrete off with the leaf blower.

Leaf blower works best if you have a building that you have doors across form each other so you can blow the dust out going in from one door and out the other. If the doors are all on one side it can not be done that way.Plus if you open the doors and its cold outside the cold air comes in at floor level and warm air going out cools and drops makes some small windstorm that blows all dust right back in that the leaf blower is pushing out.It will really piss you off when you close all the dust is just hanging in the air still in the shop. I would like to have two more doors that I could use just to open and blow it out and use wind to help buts that is not going to happen. So the shop vac is the next tool to use. This thing will clean really good till turn around and see the vac pushing the dust into the air giving everything a nice coat of dust that is amazingly even as lands on everything. You now go and get a hepa filter and now your blessed with a vac that stops up at the speed of light.Ok go old school get the broom out.It gets some dust up about 75% the other 25% lands on everything.Still dust everywhere.Does anybody know of anything I can build to go on my vacuum that would keep the filter from stopping up so fast?

I took an old squirrel cage from a CH&A furnace and put it in the area above the compressor. It blows air down on the compressor (it helps cool the compressor) but pulls from the outside. Add a couple of furnace filters and wallah instant dust collection from the air. When I start sweeping I turn it on and let it collect part of the dust...

I have run SpaceGard air filters in my print shop for the past 23 years. Blowers run 24/7. never a breakdown. Change the filters once a year... sometimes a little longer. The moving air helps keep dust suspended so it can pass through the filters.

I have a little cordless (Ryobi One+) blower that I got for next to nothing. I like it better than my regular blower for this purpose because being less powerful it's easier to blow the dust out without putting it into the air. I actually find that I use it a lot more than I thought I would for smaller tasks.

My maid doesn't do garages. :-/

From time to time I wash the floor. While it is wet, I use an air hose and/or leaf blower to get all the dust to become airborne or go out of the door. After it settles on the wet floor, I hose it down again.

I periodically wash the floor. While the floor is wet, I use an air hose and/or leaf blower to blow dust out the doors. Dust that settles on the wet floor gets washed away in a final rinse.

No, but I have a decent, simple method of dealing with the dust coming out of the shop vac's exhaust port. I take an old towel, wet it down thoroughly and drape it over the top of the shop vac, I leave it very loose so it doesn't cause any overheating issues and it traps 99% of that dust. I also use a paper sleeve over the filter that's easy to remove and either replace it or shake off well outside and reuse - I get them at HD 5 for $5.00. The just rince the towel out when you're done, or toss it in the laundry with your jeans and other work clothes.

I get a lot of leaves from my pin oak tree blowing into the garage, so the leaf blower is a natural for clearing them back out....if you use it on the lowest speed setting it still clears the floor without stirring it up so much, then once it's out the door I crank it up and blow it as far into the yard as I can.

I built this contraption. To say it works great would be an understatement. The blower blows straight up with enough CFM to filter all the air in my 32x24x10 garage.
Turn it on when you are making dust and it traps it. Turn it on and then get out you air hose and blow dust out of the corners tops of shelves... and this machine just gobbles it up.

If you're making dust inside you have to tackle that first...an old eccentric bloke at work had his house permanently pressurised with a small low pressure fan through a media filter. His house never needed frequent cleaning. I guess the skin stuff and clothing dust mostly went out the exhaust vent. I was originally impressed when I noticed that all the ornaments etc had no dust on them. This bloke was single and wouldn't do regular dusting or wipe stuff off, so the positive pressure method works.
