Wish one was closer to me. Nearest is 50 miles. Best one for bargains is 75 miles.
Since there is no point in going without a truck, that means I have to budget 30 bucks for gas to go see if they have anything I want... Mostly they don't.
When they do, killer deals.
Lots of new stuff. Example, I put new pedestals with drawers under my wife's washer/dryer, exactly the same as the factory ones, but for 10 cents on the dollar Best Buy's price.

Never had a problem and they really appreciate all donations, small or large, its their life blood.

Not necessarily.

Long story short, I was the personal representative for a the mother of a friend of mine. I was also her guardian prior to her death.

She gave her estate to four charities. Three of them sent me letters thanking me for managing her estate and thanks for the $.

Habitat for Humanity sued me for actions I took as the guardian prior to her death-one of which was making a donation to the staff of the home where the old lady lived-you know, the people who took care of her, and deserved far more than their wages.

As a result of this lawsuit, they caused the value of the estate to fall by almost 20%, between my inability to make security transfers and the legal fees that were incurred.

This "charity" was not happy with the more than $100K they received from a woman who had no contact with HFH other than thinking it was a worthy recipient of her money after her death. Apparently, they didn't think it was enough and sued me to try to make me give money back to the estate that I had spent on her behalf before she had even died-before they had a claim to anything, before they even knew she had given it to them.

It was quite fun last year when HFH called me and asked for a Christmas donation.

Yes, Just ask and they will give you a receipt for your taxes, just like GoodWill & others. Never had a problem and they really appreciate all donations, small or large, its their life blood.

Owch... This certainly paints a different color on the HFH alternative.. sorry you had such a bad experience....

If you only knew. I became her guardian because my friend (her son) shot himself and left me in charge of that mess (literally, I had to hire a crew to clean up his remains). As he expected to be her Personal Representative, there was no clause in the will for the PR to be paid and when the judge did approve my being paid, the attorney screwed it up costing me almost $3500.

I managed investments worth just shy of $480K for five years and was paid less than 5% of that amount. Had a bank or similar managed it, it probably wouldn't have profited as much and they would have taken HUGE amounts for admin fees.

Note to all, get your affairs in order, name your estate as beneficiary to everything and make sure your will has a provision to pay the PR and limit what the attorneys can earn on it.

This was my second estate and I've learned a lot and tried to teach a lot to a lot of people.
