Looks like a great build and some creative HVAC ideas.

A new garage and all the anticipation is always alot of fun. I agree with another poster's note that you will really like the utility & functionality of the attic area.

Have you decided on what you will do with the floor? Leave as bare concrete or another finish? I can provide some input to you from personal experience for VCT and epoxy if desired.

Will be watching the completion process ! Looks like you will beat the worst of the winter with your completion. :)

Thanks for the nice comments!

I have not decided what to do with the floor as of yet, but my intention is to have a coating of some type. My main goal is to facilitate an easy clean up, and secondarily I'd like an appealing finish. There will be lawn mowers, etc toward the back of the garage, and I expect to use the side utility door for most of that type of traffic. I plan to only park my suburban in the garage and use the deep side to the right for a work bench and project table. (It should be a great place to hang out with my three sons too!)

A clear coat finish would keep the dust down and make clean up easy, but I am open to a paint or epoxy. These are decisions that need to be made, but with winter coming on I am curious if the cold weather will make applying any floor coating difficult or impossible.

I also have to make some decisions on the interior walls. My contractor is recommending 1/2 inch plywood panels for ceiling and walls, which I would paint a light color for brightness and light reflection. (Although I haven't ruled out putting weathered barn wood on the left interior wall to provide a background for some signs, etc - I am from North Dakota after all) I had considered drywall, but the versatility and durability of the plywood makes sense. I'm also meeting with a heating and cooling contractor today to discuss gas heating options.

Here's an updated photo below. The garage door is on (Haas 600 series with flush finish to match existing garage door: http://www.haasdoor.com/residential/600/index.html). We also have power up in the garage as well.

If you decide to go for ply & paint, please give serious thought to using a fire retarding paint such as Timonox(Crown). You can also get a fire retardant varnish for the weathered timber too.

A great project but I can't help but think that the front elevation needs something to break it up a bit(even after the lights have been added).

Hi 51rider, the fire retarding paint is a great idea. I love this forum because you get the collective wisdom of everyone. Thanks!

I do agree with you about the front elevation. The architect's plan called for the gable on the front to be the same as the stucco and cedar to match the siding on the sides and back of the garage. I chose the full brick out of personal preference. I've promised my sons a basketball hoop mounted above the garage door, so will have that. And because of the basketball hoop, I decided to forgo a window on the attic level, as it would eventually be broken.

Now, with that all said, I'm still only 50-50 as to whether I will put up the basketball hoop. I'm open to suggestions to jazz up the front. I'm originally from North Dakota, and perhaps I can find some western accents for the front elevation....

Looks really good!

The top course of block in the foundation wasn't standard size, was it? Looks like they used 4" wide block for the front and 6" everywhere else so the block is flush with the interior walls? I don't think I've even seen that done before, and it's a great idea.

Also, was that a big LVL beam they stuck over the 12' door opening? Or just some 2x12s sistered together? Do you think I could get a picture of how they framed out that door?

Thanks for the nice words. The top course indeed was 4" and I'll try to get some photos of it and the header over the garage door. I believe it's a sistered board, but I'll confirm that.

With winter closing in fast, we got the front apron poured and the side door too.

I found a farm with some old barns and sheds that might have some available planks for the interior walls of the garage. Here's a picture of the boards I could see outside. We'll see if I can make a deal.

I've been looking closely at some great garages here on the GJ forums, and have gotten some great ideas.

Today I found a great deal on a Mr. Heater 45,000 btu gas heater for $399 plus $38 shipping. With my order they gave me a $25 gift certificate! Here's the link: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200307959_200307959

I'm also looking at this cool - and functional - ceiling mounted fan. It's kind of pricey at around $140, but I think it will come in very handy in the summer when things get hot in the garage. I haven't ordered it as I'm going to look around for a better price. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000QHFCNC/?tag=atomicindus08-20

For anyone checking in on the build, we've had some progress. The garage has been insulated and the plywood ceiling is in place. The siding has been going up this week and should be complete in the next day or two. The gutters were hung. Here are some updated pics:

The siding below is not complete yet as the cedar board trim needs to be placed.

Below is what the finished siding looks like on the other side of the garage.

My wife called me while out shopping with the girls yesterday and asked me if I'd like Gladiator storage cabinets. It seems she wanted to buy me a Christmas gift for the garage (she's a keeper). It turns out the local Anderson's stores are clearancing out its stock of selected Gladiator products! She came home with a NIB rolling storage cabinet for which she paid just $249 (MSRP $461.99/Store Price $429)

This morning I stopped at the Anderson's myself and picked up a second gearlocker and some more bargains with red clearance stickers!

These 24 inch cabinets have an MSRP of $197.99, but were regular store-priced $149; and I picked up four of them at $89 each.

The folding workstation (MSRP $247.49) was store-priced at $179, and marked down to $99. I bought one, but may go back and grab another as they are very well built. The fold out panel has a nice stainless steel surface.

The golf storage units (MSRP $142.99) were store-priced at $109, but clearanced at $49. I would have gotten two if they had them, but I had to settle for the floor model.

Looks good, I have to find the closest Andersons to Detroit. My Garage is due for a makeover.

Looks great, can you give us a little more info on what you are doing for your lighting?

There are four single bulbs in the garage level right now. I am planning for a separate fixture over the project table and another over the work bench. I'd like to see how bright it is when the walls and ceiling are painted, and go from there. I'm open to any recommendations!

Here's a link to the Andersons store locator page: http://www.andersonsstore.com/store-locations

If you're coming from Detroit you may want to call first to check stock, because they were running low on some clearance items. But their regular store prices seemed very reasonable too and it's certainly worth a call to check prices when you're ready to buy.

I think I would ditch those two other deer blinds and set yourself up a chair inside that back window in the attic. Just think you will have heat and any other comforts of home. One shot with a .223 and your next door neighbor won't know where its coming from.

It's funny you say that because in the 2010 deer season my wife called me to say there was the biggest buck (10 points) she'd ever seen in our back yard. Big bucks don't get that way by being stupid! :bounce:

Here are some updated pics of the progress on the interior.

On the left wall I decided on knotty pine tongue and groove planks for a decorative touch. I'll hang some western US signs and license plates, etc. The rest is all plywood.

Looking great! I put a coat of polyurethane on my pine T/G and it really looks good and keeps it clean.

Yup, that is what I'm going to do with this wall. Do you think I can wait until summer to do it?

I finally got to park my truck in the garage for the first time and I'm very happy with the room left over. Here's a couple of panoramic pics.

Here are the stairs in progress: The contractor set it out so I could see an "L" shaped and "U" shaped stair. I'm opting for the "L".

Winding up the project and getting ready to move into the garage. All that remains for the contractor is to install and hook up the gas heater. I really couldn't be happier with the new space and can't wait to get settled into it and start "making it mine." I did order a basketball hoop for the kids and that's up now. Here's a pic below:

Looks fantastic, that tounge and groove pine looks killer! I might have to steal that! I would go for the L shape stair, atleast for me it makes bring larger items up and down the stairs easier.

Today the 45,000 btu Mr. Heater natural gas heater was installed and hooked up! So now I have two sources of heat for the garage. First, I have the insulated heat run from the house. It has been up and running for a couple of weeks and has kept the garage above freezing and has melted the ice and snow off my truck overnight. I didn't take a temperature reading with just that, but I would say it's kept it around 35 degrees using just the heat run.

The gas heater will provide what I call "project heat" and should be capable of heating up the 22X30 garage in a relatively short time.

Below is the gas line into the garage. At the bottom you can see the box with the forced air heat vent which comes in from an underground insulated heat run. I was a bit disappointed in the location of the gas pipe as it runs up the wall directly in front of where I planned to hang the flat panel TV (see cable outlet on upper wall).

Ok, it's been a while since I've posted and so I thought I'd just post the photos of where things are about 6 months in. I still have no floor covering as of yet. I'm looking at simply applying a clear concrete sealer to keep the dust down. I'll get some exterior pics taken, but here's what the inside is looking like as of tonight:
