I like the sliding door, sweet.

BTW, when you copy/paste the image code from PB, you don't need to click the tag when posting pictures.

What color did you paint the Bridgeport ?[/QUOTE]

The bridgeport was painted with Rustoleom hammered paint, light blue.

I'm still learning with the pics. I'll give it a try next time I have new pics. Might be picking up some display cabinets this week. Would be a good time to play around with it.

Thanks for the comments guys. You guys have given me so many ideas I just wish I had more time to work out here.

The wife painted the door this week. I think its going to work fine. My beagles can already open it to get at there training toys.

We woke up Thursday to 3in of snow. So I built this quick to keep painting. Its all 1in pvc just dry fit together. Keeps the overspray off the floor and the dogs away from wet paint.

Here are all the parts out of a brigdeport M head spindle. Not to many. The coil spring is the only difficult one. I'm still looking for the lower spindle nut. Just for reference. The more I look at it, I think a cat or bt30 is going to fit. Need to make a new spindle, lower nut, and a drawbar. I'll probably wait to do that. I'd like to get most of this back together then get the drill press done.

Here's where I'm at on the mill. I think I'm going to polish the pulley housing next.

The display cabinets I mentioned earlier were dropped off today. Not a big fan of the color. The glass door are sweet. I need to go pick up the 3rd one. The price was right I couldn't pass them up.

One of the dogs came out to check out the new arrivals.

Built the bench on the other wall this weekend. Its 16in deep, no supports to the floor. One of the metal cabinets is finished and hung up.

Here's the blank wall

Top framing lag bolted to the wall

Bottom plate and legs.

Finished cabinet. 2 more to go

The workhorse of the garage. Used the bandsaw to cut the notches in the bench legs. Set the table saw up to make new hangers for the big pictures.

Kind of rough, more work to do. Picture hangers

2011-11-20_17-50-25_55.jpg

What a mess. Need to do some cleaning after I get the the bench done.

Got a teaser pic, still have molding work to do. Waiting for paint to dry.

Brought some stuff home from work. Trying to figure out how to store, hang, or organize.:headscrat This stuff really doesn't fit in a tool box drawer that well.

Pics of the trim. Had to put molding on the top of the new cabinets. I might have went crazy if they didn't match everything else. So with some scrap pieces I made a frame to put the crown on.

2011-11-24_07-57-47_569.jpg

One of them up. Thought it looked pretty good, now its in the paint booth.

2011-11-24_07-56-37_957.jpg

Finished hanger on the wall. Now there is no way the frame can come off the wall.

Trying to get a few things done before the family stuff starts. Have a lot of stuff waiting to be painted. Would also like to get that Bridgeport pully housing polished. And there's always cleaning to do.:)

Tripp,

After your comment about your drill press I had to come check out what you've been up to recently. Garage looks fantastic! I agree with others, floor choice and colors look great.

Some very nice old tools there!

Wow! Great job, Tripp!

Not much to add to a kool shop but this tiny tidbit. Have you painted the underside of your bech cabinets where the lights are? You might get more light bounce if that is gloss white...

The blue bench is in the to do list. I put it in the rendering to play around with the size. Having a mobile work table is always handy. Its going to be made out of 2x2 square tube with the skirt cut out of .125 plate.

No I haven't... yet. The screwdriver pics gave it away. Gloss white would work or I could do aluminum flashing like Red Leader. Not sure what I want to do yet.

Nice details, Tripp. Do you mind sharing your source on the 'explosion proof' lighting fixture?

The light cages are homemade. I cut out a suitable size circle, found a piece of pipe that would go around a standard light fixture. Then very carefully welded the cage bars around it. I really wanted the cages around those two lights but they cost too much. So I decided just to make them.

Hey, really like what you've done so far!

I'd like to bring back up how much I like the color you picked for the mill. I have a surface grinder I'd like to paint that color. I looked at the store and could not find the hammered paint in what they call a "light blue". Is that what it says on your can exactly?

Also, another thing, the boom hoist you have in the corner by the mill. Where did you get that? Not the chain hoist itself, but the actual boom and upright with the flange on it for bolting it to the floor.

Since you are doing this project fairly cheap, I was hoping you found that for cheap somewhere as well.

Thanks

The whole crane was homemade. Back when I was in high school my dad and I made about 20 of them for where he was working. When the economy tanked and they went under he took this one home. It sat behind his shed for a couple of years. Then he gave it to me.
These were simply built. The crane sits on a 24in sq piece of .25 plate. There are 8 3/4 concrete anchors bolting it to the floor. The O.D. and the I.D. of the pipes fit real close. I'm guessing .05 of play when new. Mine is well used thats why the arm droops a little. When new the arm was flipped over so you could use the hoist right to the base. The support beam was about 2ft longer forming a bigger triangulated area. There are grease zirks on the arm top and bottom. It moves very easy. The beam is a piece of 3in I-beam capped at the end.

The Rustoleum is part# 7212 light blue.

Everything looks great! Really like that screwdriver rack also. Lot of talent and thought put into this one.

Thanks:bounce:

Almost finished on the other side. Went to Menards today, wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Got the few odds and ends to finish some stuff. So the lights I bought for the cabinets are all hooked up. But the plug is dead. The light are low voltage so there is something wrong with the transformer in it. I unplugged the lights in the cabinets around the window (same lights) plugged the in the new ones. Worked. Such a bummer I don't know if I can get just the plug.:headscrat Try tomorrow.

I read that, and immediately thought: my garage and Shopnut's place are really in two entirely separate categories. Mine is like a little Leatherman, and his is like the full set of tools in a Snap-On Mr. Big roller.

I like this shop because it's somewhere in between the two.

On your C-clamp question, I agree that there isn't a good way to put them in drawers or on shelves. They're one of the only things I hang out in the open. But I put the hooks out of my usual sight-lines so there isn't the visual clutter in front of me when I'm working. At the same time, they're easy to grab.

I also put some of them flat on the wall behind my fold-up welding bench. But I don't think it would make sense to put all of them away like that, since you don't want to have to go through any extra steps when you just need a clamp.

In any case, his place is really looking great. I'm impressed.

Can you make another Screwdriver rack for those T-handles ?

For the C-clamps, how about another thin cabinet. Maybe on the side of tall cabinet (by your garage door track) Put a door on it using drawer slides like you did the tall cabinet ?

Thanks Jack, I thinking of building a thin cabinet with the sliding doors under the bench where the Gerstner is. They will be out of sight but easy to get at.

Another rack....would love to, got some ideas for you. I'm leaning toward the second one. Let me know what you think.

Nice transformation. I (like others) like what you've done with the space. Nice clean and detailed. I'd love to do something like this yet if you get into restoring cars with welding in new sheet metal and body and paint, well the dust...If you've done it you know what I mean. I'm happy to have a devoted 30X40 shop with drywall and heat along with compressed air. As far as tooling goes, It is kinda dead-pay wise. Been in it for over 20 years and goes in waves. Depends where your at (what shop)I guess. Good luck with your build, looks great! Mike

Yep, I'd say the second one. It looks like something Van Helsing would carry for vampire slaying. Instead of T-handles they would be wooden throwing crosses.

Hey Nuttsgt,
You can purchase T-handle racks like the one you have designed at Motionpro.com They are very common in motocross riders tool boxes.

Thanks, this is my 1st garage. I rebuilt my car about 12years ago now and your right makes a heck of a mess. I keep looking at it think its about time to do it all over again. Everything was done at my dads house, he has since filled his barn with a mill, couple of lathes, even a surface grinder. If only he would give up the tig welder:D. As for the tooling I've been in 10 years now been up, knocked back a couple of times. Jumped into cnc been no stop, more work than we can handle.

Checked out that site very cool stuff:thumbup: Wouldn't work for my wenches there to big. Standard set go up to 3/8 and thats one of my smallest. I'll just waterjet the pieces out. It only takes a few minutes.

You wouldn't by chance be running a Hurco VMX42?

Thanks for all the feed back.

Really haven't had much time to get stuff done lately. Went out of town for work. Came home and got sick. That put me out for a couple of weeks. Almost back to 100%. I did manage to tinker a bit. Got the lights under the new cabinets to work. They needed a new transformer. I also had the hanger part of the allen wench rack cut out. Trying to find a good location for them before I cut the backs out.

Thought I would show you guys a couple of things I built. Most of it is for work. Its the old saying more time than money when I made alot of this stuff. Now I just get to say I made that. The 1st pic is a tool presetter for a cnc and one of my angle plates. CMM guy at work said the angle plate is within .0002. Not bad for something thats 8x7x6.

2011-12-20_17-59-09_336.jpg

This one is a set of 1x2x3 blocks that I'm making. To the machinist out there, I do know that I can buy a pair for like $8.00 but those would be drilled and tapped. Those holes collect a lot of chips. There's less cleaning if there no holes in them. The engraving is so I'll know there mine. I also did a set of parallels with a different pin-up on them.

2011-12-20_17-58-52_299.jpg

I made these light units for one of my wifes aquariums. The end pieces are giving me some ideas for the garage. I have some drawings in the works right now.

Here it is, the C-Clamp Cabinet. Found the little C channel at the big box store. It keeps with the look of the other cabinets above them. I like this one it doesn't take up a ton of room under the bench. Might have to make two more. Its going to get stained black like the drill press stand.

The very important bits. The tape was an attempt to keep the drill somewhat on center. It kinda worked. I'm bringing home my transfer punches next time.

New stuff!!! Went out and got a motorcycle lift. The wife even gave me permission:lol:. Been scoping them out for a while. Its is from HF and I do plan on taking care of the minor irks. Which all have to do with the front tire clamp. Bonus is it already matches the garage.

Also been moving along on the wench rack. Will be welding them together tomorrow. I'm kind of torn between leaving them "in the raw" with just a clear coat. Or going all out with the paint and pinstripping. The machining on the looks really cool. Let me know what you guys think.

The garage looks great! Love the cabinets with full glass fronts, great for displaying diecast!

Thanks, the diecasts are getting harder to find around here. I have a lot of the Bigtime Muscle cars.

The wench racks are done.:) Looking for a place to hang them up. I added a signature to them before welding them up. Here's the pic of the metric one.

Nice cabinet work, looks like milk paint in the pictures. Regardless of if your wife makes a mess when painting, treasure a lady who will help with the overall project!
