I am cleaning out an old craftsman Wall mounted tool holder. It was in my brothers "Dump" pile so I rescued it. I have not figured out what is going in it yet. Anyone have any ideas, would you paint it or leave it? It has a little rust, but not too bad. I was thinking it would be nice to hold electrical tools and test leeds. Not sure yet.

Couldn't find the exact same one, but those catalogs are pretty cool. I wish I had a wayback machine. I would fill it with tools!

Well, the trick is figuring out of the configuration of the cabinet is also a useful configuration for your tools. I had some smaller metal cabinets that were similar to that. I ended up putting in pegbard to make tool arrangement more flexible and (with one of them) cutting out a shelf and adding a little door since the shelf height was too short.

Taking out the spot welded pieces is tricky with thin steel. For me, pegboard hid my impatient workmanship.

With this one, I put old wood planks on the back and used screws as pegs.

Here's my .02
I like Jack's example of the pegboard. You could relocate the Craftsman logo to the front door (it's too cool), remove the unuseable brackets, and put the pegboard on the inside.
Hammertone gray paint is available at most big box stores. It's not a match, but sufficient if the restoration bug bites you.

I like the pegboard idea Jack had. I saw in the old sears catalogs that some models came that way. I think I will move the logo, but it is going to be painted or powder coated blue. I will update slowly. Money is tight as I am sure a lot of you are feeling the same squeeze.

Strouty , that's one nifty cabinet. Nice score !

Jack Olsen , how and I mean HOW do you come up with all these slick ideas ? Is it a right side of the brain thing ? I look at your place and think it will never happen for me.

I have the exact same one. It is a Carpenter Style tool Cabinet instead of the Mechanics Tool Cabinet.
But, after thinking about selling it or restoring it...I like Jacks Idea about carefully removing the Tabs and adding Peg board on raised posts inside.
A Little more User Friendly!
Nice score for sure!

I have one of these that I don't use (Father's Day seemed like a good time to go through some of dad's old tools etc.) and the attachment shows what it was designed to hold.

It's in good shape. Is anyone interested in putting it to good use?

Cool!!! I was looking for one, but honestly I'm not sure I knew they had a carpenter's model. Sweet. I was primarily looking for the mechanic's one so I think if you still have it, it should go to smschriefer since he is so giddy about it:D

Mickey o Is that your cabinet and if so is it for sale also? Rich...

It is my cabinet, it's not currently for sale, if I find the year that I want it will be for sale but it took me years to find this one so who knows how long to find the one I want. I'm looking for the '57 - '6? mechanics tools version I want to keep my old mans ratchets in it and I have most of the other tools in NOS just waiting to jump into the right cabinet.

OK, my apologies for not being the swiftest with handling responses. I'm in South Florida and I've had a few requests. As I don't know shipping costs I think I should box it up and get an estimate. I'd like it do go to someone that would have it on display, not a reseller.

So let me find a box and see where we end up. Perhaps I can get a few actual images of it. -- Steven

Gentlemen, It was much simpler to mount the cabinet on a wall in the garage than to box it up for shipping. Thank you for your kind forbearance and appreciation of vintage garage items. It resulted in a reminder of dear dad in a place that he would have enjoyed. --Steven

Thanks for asking Richard. I started to prepare it for shipping and found a spot on a garage wall where it fits perfectly. As I mentioned in my last post, that was much easier than boxing it up so I'm going to leave it there for the time being. In the future however...if I move...it probably goes. Sorry for changing my mind, but it felt right!

Any of you who removed the tool holders happen to have them still lying around?
I just picked up one of these cabinets; it’s in great shape but missing a few of the mechanics tool holders and the small bottom drawers. I’d like to return it to original, I have most of the vintage Craftsman tools to fill it.
Thanks!

I'm glad this post was brought back from the dead. I have the carpenters cabinet like the one Wall Type posted and until now was just guessing at tool layout in the cabinet. Printed off the post with the pictures of the cabinet with tools in it. It is at least a place to start.

And there is this for illustrating the tool arrangement.

Hi Rich. No worries, thanks for getting back to me. I can't say it's fair but let me check with Zeke because he lives just a couple of towns away and that would be so much easier for me than boxing and shipping it...
