I don't have near the room to have a true staircase so I built one that I can raise onto the ceiling when not is use.

The scuttle hole has a hinged door to fit against the knee wall in the attic. It is held up by magnets for easily getting up there. I built out some insulation so that my heat doesn't sneak up through there.

All the stairs are dadoes in and there is a garage door opener spring to help lift it and keep people from dying if it gets dropped as it's pretty heavy. I just carabiner it to the ceiling when not in use.

Has your buddy looked at this type of opener (side mount) model 3800 by liftmaster. It mounts to the side of the door and turns the tube for operation. Just an idea...

I like the spiral stair case idea. My stairs force me to tweak the boat towards the car side of the garage. I was thinking of making the stairs thinner to the landing.

If I had it to do over, I would put it on the outside of the garage. Stairs eat up alot a valuable space.

Thats what I did. At 24x32 I didn't want to lose any space, and the upstairs will be an apartment someday. I have also extended the roof out over the stairs and upper landing.
