Amongst the items I ordered for Christmas were two ratchets from Cripe Distributing via ebay, with payment from paypal. These were ordered and paid for on two separate orders on December 22nd. First time I've been through this and I didn't realize they could have been combined on one order.

Order #1: Napa stubby flex 3/8 ratchet.
Received at my home 12/27. Padded envelope in mailbox.

USPS tracking for this one:

At Boise ID facility December 23rd.

Delivered to my home December 27th.

Order #2 GearWrench 81209 3/8 drive stubby full polish ratchet. $11 plus 3.75 shipping. Have not received yet (1/6/12), so I checked status.

Ordered and paid (paypal) December 22nd.

USPS tracking shows it at the origin sort facility (Boise ID) on December 22nd.

Received to my P/O location and delivered to my home on December 24th.

We don't do much ebay or mail order and this is the first time I've had something like this happen.

Is there anything that can be done? Cripe says it's out of their hands and there is nothing they can do. Is it worth pursuing through ebay or the usps? How much of a pia are these type of claims/processes?

Or should I just order another $14 ratchet and be done with it?

Thanks

I'm confused. You have confirmed delivery to your home, but say you didn't receive them?

Did you get empty packages? Or nothing at all? :dunno:

If the tracking info says delivered you are SOL. Not even Paypal will refund you if it says delivered. You are either the victim of a postal error or someone stole it out of your mailbox.

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
Postal carriers need tools too.....

A few years back I ordered a Calphalon Professional wok, sure enough the on-line vendor I bought it from shipped in just the Calphalon box, which basically was a printed photo of the wok. According to the USPS it was delivered, I never received it, did I tell you that my postman is Chinese? Wonder what could of happened to it.....

The UPS man repeatedly does not get a signature, let alone ring the doorbell here.
Many a time there has been 1000's of rounds sitting on the porch in plain view of John Q. Public. Haven't 'lost' a package yet (very surprisingly)

Have you checked with your neighbors? It's common for USPS to misdeliver.

Also have you checked around your home. If packages won't fit in your mailbox the carrier can leave them in some interesting places. (like by a door that doesn't get used).

This is reportedly happening a lot lately.

Our local mail substation told us that lots of customers report tracking saying package delivered to house but it never was.

FWIW, Amazon.com was super nice about it and refunded/replaced with no hassle.

Sometimes my mailman would scan something the deliver it the next day. I would try to ask him directly or go to your local post office and inquire. I really doubt that the USPS delivery man would risk their job during this cutting back time...

here is how i would handle the situation:

if the package arrives torn open and missing contents then i would go after the seller.

if the package does not arrive but is seen at its last check in location, call the facility and ask for lost and found. they need to search because it could have fallen or kicked to a corner. at this point if the package is not found the USPS is at blame. if the package is found in the lost and found, have them mail it priority to you for no extra fee.

can't blame ebay unless the person never shipped anything at all (thats why you need to ask for delivery confirmation)

eBay and UCC both say that until it is delivered to your hands in the condition described, the seller is 100% responsible. Insurance has nothing to do with it, and insurance protects only the seller as he is the one who takes the risk.

File an INR (Item Not Received) with eBay with a request for money back. Until you do that your hands are tied.

Not true!! "Delivery" is defined as showing up in online tracking vs. "in your hands".

When DC says delivered and you don't have your item you're usually SOL unless the seller makes good for the sake of consumer goodwill. (they don't have to though)

I believe that is when no tracking number or delivery confirmation are available.

He need to file claim at USPS, not eBay seller or PayPal.

OP: Post link eBay seller, to see what it says on the seller's page.

I hate shippers. I got my last tool set from sears all knicked up, look like it had been through an industrial drier cycle. Check out this video on youtube

When they review the case the response will be "The tracking shows the item was delivered. Your claim is denied."

Been through it more than once.

I had the USPS lose a package for almost 3 months before it showed up. The tracking number showed it was shipped and in transit, but was nowhere to be found. They would not do anything helpful. I had given up on getting it when is suddenly showed up. It was postmarked just like the tracking info. said when it was shipped.

No package at all on order #2.

No locking mailbox. Rural area, mailbox is alongside road with no sidewalks, just a drainage ditch. Usually not any foot traffic on this road because of the speed, the limited sight-lines, and no place to actually walk without being in the road. But of course it's certainly not impossible for somebody to walk along the road and access the mailboxes.

Same here, many lead bullets delivered by the usps, and other reloading supplies by ups or fedex with no missing packages. The missing ratchet is really the only thing to come up missing in 26 years of package delivery at this house, so I consider ourselves pretty lucky.

I think I'll just order another one and be done with it.

Thanks for the replies.

Somewhat of a Hail Mary but have you tried contacting Cripe and see what they say?

I have order from Cripe numerous times and actually received a empty but still sealed package from them. I contacted and explained what happened and they resent the correct item.

IMO I would not accept that for an answer from Cripe. When I purchase a product from a company and pay shipping, I expect that it will be delivered to me as promised. I believe this is their responsibility, as long as I wasn't given the option to decline purchasing shipping insurance, or was given the option to purchase it but didn't choose it.

Tracking showed it "delivered", what more do you expect of Cripe?

What if it was stolen out of the mailbox? Cripe responsible for that?

Your expectations of Cripe offering or not offering insurance is not their responsibility.

Insurance doesn't even cover "delivered" packages.

Package theft was very common over the holiday period.

I have never had a problem with USPS. But i have had several UPS and FedEx packages show delivered and haven't seen them. I think my neighbor has a set of Dave Ramsey books and the same boots as my wife. After all she was in the newspaper for stealing flowers and other things from a cemetary.

USPS delivered 2 packages to me, that never made it or were stolen. The tracking #'s showed both were delivered on the same day hours apart. The ace up my sleeve was that I had a hold on my mail, and USPS still tried to deny responsibility. After several frustrating conversations with the local postmaster, they would not do anything, so I ended up calling USPS consumer affairs. Now the ball is starting to roll, but slowly.

Interesting incident concerning a USPS missing package. This was a number of years ago; sold via ebay a rather expensive gold coin to a collector in Calif.

Shipped via Priority mail. A week after shipping, I received an email from the buyer concerned because he hadn't received it. I scanned the USPS receipt and emailed it to him. A week later, still no package. He asked at his PO and was told to contact the originating PO. I went to my PO, and was told I was supposed to wait 30 days before filing a complaint. They did, however, put a trace on it.

Long story short, about 10 days after the trace, the buyer had to sign for a Priority mail delivery - the "missing" coin.

Of course it didn't hurt that I had insured it for a rather large amount, with delivery confirmation. Always wonder how far across the country it got before it disappeared and reappeared, and if that PO is now shorthanded.

Also wondering if insuring for a large amount sets off flags in the eyes of some postal workers.

Talk to your UPS driver maybe he recalls the delivery? It could have been a sub driver and ended up down the street. I've had several packages end up there.

Last Xmas my package ended up at the neighbors and I received the other neighbors all in the same delivery. My package showed delivered to. My neighbor ended up giving it to me.

Contact the shipper and UPS. UPS should have record of the delivery person on that day maybe he recalls the delivery or there are others missing packages on record to.

Yep. They said that they only have access to the same information that I do, i.e. tracking says it was delivered, and they said to contact the usps to find out who the carrier was on that day.

I guess I need to file a notice with usps and maybe ebay as well. I can't seem to find a way to file a claim online with the usps, and I dread having to go into town and deal with the local PO office.

Just had a second instance of a usps mailing not showing up this week. My gun club membership card did not show up. I'm confident the club mailed it out as the guy who handles the membership stuff is **** about the process. He was able to tell me the day he received my check, the day they cashed the check, the day the card was printed, and the day it was mailed out. He confirmed that they had my correct address (same address on file with them for the last 12 years), then he mailed a second card which arrived in two days.

That's not a good situation as the card does not have photo id and anybody who has it can use the club. The card has several special permission markings that allow the use of various parts of the club (long range precision rifle and others) some of which require proficiency testing before those permissions are granted.

Same here! According to the tracking, mine dropped off the face of the earth for a couple month, then magically showed up in GA. It was them promptly delivered! :headscrat

Pretty much in similar situation with a $30 purchase supposedly sent through USPS on 12-28-11. Paid via Paypal. No package received, seller sent message/confirmation number it was sent USPS on 1-4-12, the tracking number given by seller has some weird nomenclature attached from USPS that says something like on 1-4-12 shipper notified USPS electronically to expect a package for shipment but this does not confirm that any package was ever received or sent and there is no delivery confirmation receipt or proof of delivery, no other information is available by USPS. I sent USPS an email requesting further information but have not heard back from them. next step is to contact paypal and try to recover the money sent. At least it is only $30.

Filing a claim with eBay or PayPal is useless and a waste of everyone's time. If there's any kind of tracking or delivery confirmation showing the package was delivered, they're going to deny the claim.

Filing a claim with the seller is ridiculous, because they shipped the package and have the confirmation that it WAS delivered by the carrier - and, not to put to fine a point on it, Cripe Distributing isn't going to try to defraud anyone. They're not responsible for it not arriving at this point.

Filing a complaint (note I don't say "claim") with USPS is really your only recourse, but since the package shows as delivered, there's really nothing they can do. If it actually shows as delivered, then the last person to touch it was the route carrier, because they have to check it as delivered. You might try to get ahold of them to see if they know anything, but really, again, you're kinda SOL.

Any insurance on the package doesn't matter at the point that it's shown as delivered.

I'd definitely report it to the USPS, though, so it gets tallied with any other information (i.e. theft from mailboxes in a particular area, theft by carrier, etc.). The USPS keeps track of this info, and will initiate an investigation if a pattern is detected.

Ultimately, the only fix to this is vigilance in negotiating shipping, and it's going to cost you more: Ensure that everything is insured, has tracking/delivery confirmation, and is setup to require a signature. The last part is key, because if it's not your signature or the signature of someone living at the address, then you've got a valid claim.

Unfortunately, you're going to have a hard time with this, because not every seller is going to have these options available. In many cases, it's an added expense, and a lot of automated systems aren't setup to accommodate the service or the fee, and a lot of sellers aren't willing to deal with the hassle.

Such is the risk of mail order/online shopping.
