i believe at one time they had a date of manufacture stamp and a date of sale stamp to determine warranty before they had a lifetime warranty. i have seen wrenches with two date codes also.......so i doubt if it was factory reconditioned.

The date code stamp at the time of sale was a 1920's practice. By the 1950's, the warranty was lifetime. I dont believe that the drivers had date stamps on the truck in the 50's (if they did, I'd love to find some!), and these round head ratchets were impossible to repair on the truck if the teeth were stripped.

I'll post some 1920's tools with 2 date code stamps when I get home tonight.

I'm 90% sure this was a factory reconditioned ratchet. Perhaps dissassebling it will show evidence of a new ring of teeth having been pressed into the head.

Here is a shot of the "Exchange" stamping on Elroy's 1/4" drive TM70B. Look close just above the glare spot on the "grip" portion just below the ID band. Only the three horizontal strikes are present, the verticle "leg" is not there. This ratchet was obtained as a warranty "exchange" off a Snappy truck along a dirt road in Muhlenburg County, Kentucky in 1983.

This is the original kit purchase new in 1971 or '72. The flex has been added and the 1/4" to 3/8 adapter and one extension are Craftsman.

What does the exchange mark mean? Can the ratchet still be warrantied? Why do they stamp this into the tool?

It means it was Exchanged

Elroy has no idea if it could be warranted and Elroy would hope that it is quite obvious as to why they maked this tool.

Because it was Exchanged

What isn't clear here?

i wonder when the exchange program was stopped? it was common in the 80's but no longer used. IIRC the last E stamped ratcht i owned was replaced with a new one years ago, it seemed at the time they were trying to get them out of circulation.

I understand what EXCHANGED means, I'm not a total idiot. I just wondered why it was put on the tool.

Thanks Krusty for sort of answering the question by saying there was an "exchange program", but I had no idea what the exchange program involves and what its purpose was. I guess it means a reconditioned tool as opposed to a new tool.

Here are four 12 point 9/32 drive snap on sockets that were re-stamped at the time of sale. The first was made in 1931, and re-stamped in 1932. The 3 on the right were made in 1930, and then a 1931 date code (*) was stamped directly over the 1930 date code (0).

Heres an earlier re-dated tool, this rare screw socket driver was originaly dates 1927 (the first year for Snap on date coding), and then re-stamped with a "9" at the time of sale.

This "No-Name" 1/2" drive speeder came from Elroy's Grandfather. Elroy received it before Grand Dad passed in 1980. Would someone be able to identify this speeder ?

The knurl had a few flat spots in it so Elroy painted it his favorite color. Yep that would be Chevrolet Orange. It was rather crusty when Elroy received it and the spin handle was stuck. That's all fixed now. Any brand guesses would be much appreciated.

Elroy would be very pleased to identify the OEM manufacturer. Thanks in advance for your post.

In the UK we call the Speeder a "speed brace".
But I have never seen one of those like in Elroy's first post, with the bent T shape handle. Seems to me thay'd be very good in places where I would use a spinner.
...and guess what? I want one... or more...

Perhaps a close up shot of the socket end of that speeder might contain a hint. I noticed the rather abrupt ring that encircles the drive end of the speeder which strikes me as rather uncommon.

You want a long T Snap-on Spinner? I have plenty of them. They made them into the 1930's, and not they offer a Blue Point series of them from 14/-1/2 drive, with abll braring spinners.

Elroy appreciates the help. So lets hear your input on the OEM manufacturer of this 1/2 inch drive "speed brace"

Some old Blackhawks had a similar end.
Sorry about the bigness of the pic (alloy artifacts)

Actually I'm going through the site now and Bonney also had drive ends like that. I'll pobably find a few others too.

That's damn close and much appreciated. Elroy thanks you for the effort on postings this photo lead to a nagging question. Elroy can't say it's a 100% match just yet.

That's a good clue. Thanks!!

That's the plan. Elroy will be sure to post a few detailed pictures when done. Plan on about 6 weeks because Elroy has a few other projects to do first.

Well the 6 weeks ran a little long but Elroy has it done

If ya think the snappy turned out nice, you should see the Browning.
This little ratchet blue was done in preparation for this:
