Won a ManCave Contest...overwhelmed by needs/wants

I have been a long time lurker/planner.

This week I won a ManCave contest put on by a local news station.

The prizes are a 47" Flat Screen, Surround Sound, and Theatre/Recliner seating. The plan is for the news station to throw me and 26 friends a superbowl party in the new "ManCave".

This is a pic of the garage of my recently purchased house. (it actually has a lot more stuff in it now to include a car with a transmission I rebuilt on a work bench)

I have quite a few hobbies mostly automotive/motorcycle that require a lot of space in the garage but i'd also like to get the mancave in there.

Less than 2mths to have the garage ManCaved while maintaining space for my hobbies has me pretty overwhelmed.

I was hoping GJ could show me pics of dual purpose garages. In the end I hope to have half of the garage ready for a superbowl party and the other half to drop/rebuild a motor.....am I expecting too much in this space?

thanks for any pics/recomendations/comments.

Nick

Just spend a few weeks looking at garage gallery...there are probably hundreds of garages you could get ideas from...

I have been going through the gallery thread for years and years. Now that I have to make decisions I just want to toss my hands up in the air and say "f it".

I started saving pictures of wants/needs/must haves last night. Hoping to sort it into groups of "doable" with limited time/money/space.

Give me the dimensions of your garage and a few things you want to keep in there (along with pics) and I'll be more than happy to come up with some layouts using Google Sketchup.

that would be soo awesome. I can post pics/dimension this evening as I dont have them off hand.

I keep coming back to Scotts thread as what would be my Ideal garage. It's more garage than ManCave

My main wants are the sliding storage across the top and the cabinets. Pulling the car (in my case) motorcycles/car/engine lift would leave me enough open floor to host a party.

First-off, YES - Scott's garage rules - for a 2-car attached space, it's perfect. I'd still need a shop in back though!

As for winning a "ManCave" contest and only getting a TV and chairs - that's the worst! ;) I'd have them Epoxy the floor and leave that **** in their boxes so I could SELL it for REAL man-cave stuff (tools).

I am with you e-tek. Winning this thing has been a nice kick in the rump to get things done (like my floors). A buddy and I will be moving the car I am working on to his shop and I will try to get the floors done and walls painted. All things I should of done before the wife turned it into a storage.. i told myself i wouldnt let this happen.. now I have to move **** just to get to my toolboxes.

Can't help. I do not understand the 47" TV, surround sound and reclining seating in a garage. Seems like a terrible waste of valuable shop area to me.
Put that stuff in your house, call the room a "man-cave", and have a helluva party. Then go back to your garage and do work.

It's the part that's gonna fall in the ocean when
Plus One

What Steevo said.

IMHO the garage is for working not watching TV. (I know, I know lot of you guys have TVs in the shop but I can't get anything done if I'm watching TV).

Plus when I saw the headline I was thinking, "Cool, he won a shop full of tools."

Congrats anyway, you're gonna make wayyyy.. more progress on your garage than you would under any other circumstances. Nothing like a deadline to focus your attention. :)

Congratulations on your win. That looks like a pretty good sized house. Is there already a rec room? If so, why not make it the mancave to receive the prize and then move the desired items to the garage when you have more time to decide what you want?

CONGRATS!

Is part of the contest the fact that it has to be in the garage? If that's not what you want and you don't need to, definitely put it in the house. If you need to but don't want to, set it up temporarily and then take it out and have your garage for real garage space.

I would love a TV in my garage, and surround sound wouldn't be bad either, but comfy chairs and sofas belong in the house.

Congrats! I echo what the others have said, while the TV can stay, recliners can not. Put that in your theater/pool room/basement what-have-you.

I submitted the photo of the garage. The rules stated that mancave would be put in that space, and aired on the News.

I do have a 2 spare bedroom and there is an open loft area upstairs

I am hoping when they come out to install they'll see one of these other rooms as a better option but I wont know until they do.

Until then, I am taking advantage of this whole thing to get my garage cleaned up and If I can get a TV/Surround sound wired in I'll take it.
