I have been looking to grab one of the 13 drawer units to add more tool storage and as a workbench in the garage. Been waiting on an opportunity to have a vehicle and help moving it with a 349 coupon good till feb. I see the gloss is coming out. I hadn't cared about the wrinkle finish before, now I wonder about the pros/cons of the wrinkle vs gloss finish. Is one more durable than the other against garage bumps/scratches? Other reasons to pick one over the other?

Thanks, Russ

I think anything right now would be speculation as nobody has actually seen or posted a pic or review of the new gloss finish. Thooks, I believe, posted a link to HF's website with the new gloss box, though no pic as of yet:

I am in the same boat, just waiting to decide what to do, and to make things more complicated I am also looking into Montezuma boxes. Saw a couple at sears for a decent price and some 56" online for like 300 more than the HF one.

In my opinion the greatest advantage of the gloss box is the looks, the crinkle red finish looks more pink than anything and I supposed it will collect more dirt and will be harder to clean. I am happy to see that the description for the gloss box states it is powder-coat finished as well.

Time to decide. tick tock

I'm thinking the wrinkle would be more durable against scratches and bumps, but then again, its powder coated gloss red so while it may get scuffed (noticeable in light) it may not "scratch". Thats where I see the wrinkle finish won't even scuff, or scratch. I'm thinking it would be more durable because the wrinkle finish adds some thickness and texture to the box as well, making the steel a bit stronger too.

This is just my opinion of course.

I do not think it will make any difference for dents or dings, but the old crinkle finish may be a little more resistant to scratches and even if it isn't, at least it should be less noticeable. I am just happy to see it is powder-coated, but then again shipping weight is only 1 lb, go figure what is right.... :bounce:

I have the HF 5dwr cart in the same maroon crinkle finish. The powder coat holds up just fine and no more or less than any other smooth finish pc'd box.

Touch up is more difficult because of color match and any touch up paint will lack the textured finish.

The major drawback of the crinkle coat is if you work in a dusty environment like a paint shop, media blasting area or high volume grinding shop.

The dust gets into the nooks and crannnies of the finish to the point that it is near impossible to remove -and everything from 3m adhesive remover to MEK was used . I had a co-worker that had that problem so bad on his 42" roller, when I got my 5 dwr cart, I sanded the top crinkle coat on the whole cart lighltly and then sprayed with two coats of clear.
Problem solved, but added $$$.

Just something to think about as to the were's and how's you'll store and use your box.

Just buy the wrinkle, chances are they will keep the gloss priced higher for a good while anyway. The wrinkle actually holds up dam good IMO, far better then other gloss boxes I have.

I would get the crinkle finish because you have the coupon for it. The posted link to the gloss cabinet has a diffetent item number so your coupon will more than likely not work on the new style.

FYI Utah store has the gloss top box on display already.... Kind of bummed, usually means the lower is coming.... I bought a wrinkle, and need 3 more to do what I need, and will now have to paint it gloss :)

I'm content with my wrinkled up tool holder. Its easy to wipe it off every once in a while to knock the dust off...

Again, above, was stating my opinion.

What you experienced is not at all an anomally as the dirt and dust does indeed get trapped in the texture no different than dust stuck in a stucco wall.

Unlike std. dust tho, dried bondo dust, paint overspray, etc. cures and hardends over time so getting it out, even with solvents, is a *****. Add in metal grinding shavings or sand grit and there ya go. Do work with a lot of Sika Flex , black silicone caulks or anything else that is not water based or is solvent resistant and the texture tends to eat that ^%$ up and hold it but nothing will remove it without scraping or major scrubbing. But razor blades are not an option on a textured finish.

Unlike a smooth finish, no razor blade or even scrub brush will work in many cases.

Buy what you want folks, I just am suggesting from experience.

For a basement or garage box, no biggie. For industrial or shop use, it's not so much what you do but the environment that it is exposed to that fubars it.

I've had the hf toolbox longer Than most and been impressed with how well it holds up. I think th gloss would scratch and fade more easily over time. Just my to cents
