Not me, but my dad was W5EYU in Fort Worth nack in the 60s. His shack was a nice corner bench in the back of out 20x24 garage. Didn't take up a lot of space. It used to be in the house, in their bedroom on a gray bench probably 3x5 with a couple of shelves. We had a 70 or 80' three leg tower in the back yard, I think running a folded dipole. I do have his copy of the 1946 Edition of the Radio Amateurs Handbook. I also have a bunch of QSL cards. 73s to ya, hope lots of ideas come in. I'll look for a picture.

Dood, you really need to learn how to spell: it's "amateur".

I should think that you would know how to spell the name of your hobby, if you take it as seriously as you indicate that you do.

I've had my ham license since 1960. My current call is W6WBJ. I am involved in a license non-renewal case with the FCC right now, and I am very proud of the way I am kicking the Commission's ***.

KF4QVI here. I don't have one in the garage yet. It's still waiting on concrete to be poured. But I do have plans to install a dual banded and a HF rig to monitor when I'm out there.

I have a neighbor behind me that has 12 large antennas on his property. His helper was on mine the other day checking his listening wires. he told me he talks all around the world with his setup. I'll take some pics and post them up

Now I have to go find those QSL cards and see if you are in there. What state(s) would you have been in between 1960 and 1966ish? I'm pretty sure dad was a worked all 50.

I used to keep mine in a cabinenet in the garage and ran coax up to the roof to a 6M beam, a 2m j pole and a 70cm j pole. Right now, it's apart and being moved into the room my 21 YO vacated last year. Current call is KD6YCZ

I find this stuff fascinating but have never done it. What level operator are some of you guys? A friend and his dad used to compete in the operator contests to see how many foreign countries that they could contact.

I even have an old Hollicrafters radio if anyone is interested? Message me if you're interested.

I was a ham operator from 1967 - 1975. Had an "extra" class license while in high school (WA3JQU). Made most of my own equipment but I did eventually get some Collins S line stuff. Still have it, but I don't have any power cords for them. We had a tiny house, so I kept the equipment in the semi finished attic where I slept.

It was a great hobby when I was young, but I drifted away from it when I never lived anywhere where I could put up an antenna.

I taught my 11 year old daughter morse code. She loves to tap out messages to me when she doesn't want to disturb her mom.

I'm a hamster too. Have kept the license current but havn't used it in years, just not that talkative I guess.
I love restoring ancient receivers though. You've reminded me I need to get the Hallicrafters sx-28 out of the basement and into the garage, it'll look perfect in the man-cave, sound great, and keep it warm in there too.

WD9HRP. Still have my novice call I got in 1977.

Extra back when you still needed 20 WPM.

All my stuff is collecting dust, but there is a vertical antenna beside the shop-another on the Someday list.

My dad has been licensed since 1953 when he was WN3JXB, then he was K9KUV, WA9ZTN and he's now K9UV and on 75 meters every day.

AA8MF (Former N8SJH and KG8AD), Extra class. Worked all states with inverted dipole at 4', blasting my neighbors TV!

Haven't been on in a few. Lot of old guys talking about nothing. Would like to string up some wire and hoist some aluminum again, though.

When I got that call sign in the mail, with that "MF" ending, I told my wife I needed to send it back and get another one issued.........She said "Keep it..........It's you!"

If you're gonna talk like an 80's surfer it should be spelled "Dude". Glass houses.:)

Upgraded to Extra last year. Shack is out in a corner of the detached garage. Wife said I couldn't put the tower against the house like I wanted. Don't talk much but enjoy learning.

Not sure I'd have upgraded if there was still the code requirement. Learning the extra material was hard enough on it's own.

LOL-the guys who were in class with me had their licenses in the FAx Range. The guy who got WD9FAG instantly refused the call and the FCC replaced it.

Another guy who was licensed about the same time got WD9FUC. He had it changed the first time he got on CW and ended with the pro-sign "K".

Mine, how can you do better than Hot Rod Paul for HRP?

You might be right :shocking: The neighbors helper was in my back yard checking on these funny things and he said it was amateur. Told nme these were listing devices it has a small wire streched both ways about a 1000' each.

Heres a couple of pics look close at the one of the trees and you can see one of his towers :headscrat

I should up my license as I am a Tech. I have not used my stuff much as someone else said, it's often a bunch of old guys talking about a whole lot of nothing. I got started because my friends and I often go far out into the back country and wanted something better than CB. At the time you could get repeaters in a lot of places you couldn't get a cell signal. I was active with RACES for quiet a while and our local SAR. For the most part, I use my stuff for off road trips and on rare occasion, a road emergency in the middle of nowhere. Hitting up a local repeater can be good for getting some local information when you're somewhere new.

KN4**X when I was 15, which was back in '57! Didn't pursue it although always interested, and thanks to some interesting "stuff" in the day got up to 18WPM. Always enjoy seeing a personalized ham tag on the road. Great hobby. (Dang, where did I put that grid dip meter?)

N5ZRL since 1993. Been out of the game for a while, but once had an '80 Rohn tower in the back yard, topped by a 24' mast with VHF repeater for 2m & 70cm bands, plus a UHF TV station repeating the weather radar from our local National Weather Service feed.

Most of my installations since were mobile, so no real advice, though I did keep a fold down table in my bike shed with a multi band receiver and long wire set up on a shelf above it. I did a lot of late night listening while building a few motorcycles.

I really need to get another radio....
