Another House to Building SER and MHF

I'm already over-budget on the garage, so I want safe power but it does not need to be Cadillac wire. Code is fine. If I want to redo later when funds replenish I have no problem digging the trench out again to add Conduit and other wire. I just want power without having to move the generator out there.

Hey guys, Where do you find such wire? I don't need 500' of each. I need 90' of SER and 150' of mhf (or could I use URD?). Need 2-2-2-4 al, Where do I buy?

And to double check. 60 amp breaker inside house at main panel, ser inside (no conduit), transition to MHF in box outside (conduit to 24 deep) then 24 deep to garage direct burial (no conduit), conduit up and into back of Panel with 60 amp breaker? Wire size is 2-2-2-4 al the whole way, 210 feet. Additional 8' ground rods, 6' apart. Is that good? Thanks again all!!!

If you need details. Lighting- Eight 8 foot T8's , 12A 240 compressor , a little 240 welder , and some hand tool outlets. Maybe a lift later, much later. Just me working.

URD cannot enter the building, you don't want that.

All the box stores have spools of mobile home feeder, direct burial stuff, here they have 2-2-2-4 no problem. They will measure it out and cut it and roll it up for you. Don't forget to measure the down in the ground and back up out of the ground distances, and add enough for mistakes change in plans, etc.

Thanks Charles, I'll stop by your favorite box, Agent Orange, and see what they can do for me. You should get a commission on your internet sales. I was just shocked at the spool prices. My plan was to buy a spool of thhn/thwn and pull separate wires until I saw the prices. By the time I got the conduit and pulled the wire I would be in the dark and cold for a year. It sure is easy to under-estimate the cost of a building, isn't it?

Do not forget the antioxide compound. Noalox by Ideal is a great product. completely cover your bare portion of the conductor and use a torque wrench to when terminating.

Do a price comparison at a electrical supply house. I find the prices are always cheaper than HD or Lowes. The last time I purchased some 2-2-2-4 mobile home feeder it was around $1.50 ft at HD and about $1 at Eck Supply. I think Tristate Electrical Supply is in your area.

In the Atlanta area the electrical supply places keep a gun behind the counter, every time you come in, they hold you up for everything you've got. Highest prices around here are the supply houses.

If you do find one cheaper, and I haven't, just have HD call, they will match the supply houses.

I should clarify the supply house lower price. The lower price has been typical for me when buying service/feeder wire. I have found Lowes and HD to be cheaper on breakers, panels, conduit, etc, in most cases.

This is a bad time to be buying spools of wire, it is very high right now with no end in sight. Same thing happened several years ago.

2-2-2-4 USE-2 was $1.69 /ft last time I checked at HD. I got lucky when I bought because the reel they pulled off the shelf had 1.47 on the tag.
