Picked up my completed work bench from my buddy and I bought a 48" dual fluorescent fixture to mount underneath the riser. This is a plug in style light but I was wondering if it's possible to put a switch on the light?

Would it be ok to cut off the plug, wire to switch, then wire a plug from the switch to the wall outlet?

Open up the fixture, and install a pull chain, turn type or push button type canopy switch.

Would a normal flip type switch be bad mounted to the side of the bench?

You can use a home type switch inline to the plug. Just mount a box to the side of the bench, route the wire through it, and clip one side of the wire to make the connection through the switch to the light.

Would you guys "make" a new cord to plug into the wall and run to the switch box or just cut the factory cord in half and work with that?

I would probably cut it in half, but another option would be to use a metal box with the switch, and just cut an extension cord off and wire it into the switch. Then near the light put a receptacle and connect the two. That way your light just plugs in. :)

Probably going to end up adding some outlets as well here soon. I already have one on the bench that my buddy put in when he built it so I'm trying to decide if I want to just get a power strip to plug into it or put in actual outlets on it.
