Ramset cartridge disposal

I helped the BIL clean out his garage, and he found a package of Ramset .22 cartridges. Since he wasn't comfortable with handling things like this, I took them off his hands. It made my sister happy to get them out of her home, too.

I have .22 rifles, but I don't want to foul them or do something that's not safe. I have no use for them and would like to dispose of them. Is there a good way to get rid of these things?

Put them in a bucket of water. Eventually, some will leak into them, neutralize them, and they can go in the trash.

Or, just throw them in the trash.

If you are THAT worried about it.. take them to a gun store, I am sure they could dispose of them.

I'm not sure what the worry is, all they are is blanks....

It won't take long in the water. All they have over the powder is a little plastic thing folded into the casing. If they are purple, they have the most power, about that of regular ammunition. After that, it goes down to a lower charge: red, then yellow, green, brown, etc.

Its probably smokeless powder, most likely the same thing used in regular .22 ammo. I have a .22 single shot, hand cocked Winchester model 60. I would not hesitate to fire them in that, would be fun.

Fire a regular round or two after them to clean out most of the crud they leave.

If they have paper wads, this could be bad. If the paper wad becomes stuck in the barrel, it could cause the barrel to burst or "ring".

Yeah, a piece of paper will really do this much damage. I saw a shotgun barrel a kid stuck a candy wrapper down. Ruined a VERY nice trap gun.

Put them on craigslist. Have the buyer bring their ramset and a chunk of wood to test it on.

They don't have paper wads in them and you can fire them through your gun. If your gun is a semi-auto they will not charge the bolt, you'll have to fire single shot. They will likely leave more crud than a standard .22 round will though.

If you have a police station near by you can take it to them. I know because I recently found some live 22 rounds in the bottom of some cabinets we bought.

Is this what we have come to?
They are .22 blanks!
About as dangerious as a 4 inch pocket knife.
(Remember those?)

Either use them or give them to the first carpenter that walks by.

If they were dangerous to have around they wouldn't be on the shelf at home depot. I use them all the time in a .22 revolver for making noise, I don't notice anymore fouling that shooting bullets.

Wow, I didn't know they were simply .22 blanks. In fact, I don't think I've seen blanks of any caliber.

I think there's only one proper solution here--add a .22 revolver to my collection! :D

Thanks to all for your info.

They even have "Super X" stamped on the back of the cartridge, this is Winchester's brand of .22 ammo, even though it says nothing about super X or Winchester on the box. Obviously winchester is making them for ramset. After the end is uncrimped, they are the exact same length as spent .22 shells. (because that's all they are)

More info I never knew. BTW, they have the green tips. Thanks, Zeke.

Put them in a nice heavy pair of linemens pliers like kleins, sneak up on somebody working on a jobsite, and drop the pliers nose down with the shot into the concrete floor, never ever gets old. Don't do it when their on a ladder unless you really don't like the person.

Heehee! In my younger jackarse days, I might have done it.

(I'm a much older jackarse now. :D)

Just for the record--I've been shot with a 22 caliber blank, and there was blood... (OK, not a lot, but some.) Had it been an eye, it would have been serious, but my leg survived just fine.

And, a 4 inch pocket knife will kill easily. That's long enough to reach the heart, or many other vital organs.

Now after critizing your post, the final paragraph is right on, just hand them to a carpenter or contractor, and you'll be doing fine.

My goodness! No wonder you all are losing your Liberty. You have to ask the school teacher when its time for you to pee. Pathetic to say. If you cannot think for yourself, what you gonna do when you get to the edge of the cliff? I don't think common sense will tell you to jump. But then again, some people lick their fingers and grab onto energized Buss bars. I wasted my time reading this one. The best one, "Take them to the Police Station":bounce:

AND.....let us not forget to never fire them inside a garage that has that dangerous OSB on the walls as a fire is just around the corner AND if the insurance companies find out you will not be covered!

Keep digging in that garage until you find the ramset gun that they go in!

Everyone loves free tools especially ones that go bang!
