I thought some of the Garage Journal members would be interested in an idea one of our customers had us put in place last week.

The customer wanted to know if we could convert the Garage Pals 6 Foot Storage Cabinet into a Closet. We hadn't done that before, but here is what the guys in the shop came up with.

The guys took the closet hanger rack design that we use on the bottom of the helmet bays and extended the rack to fit the full 4 foot width of the storage cabinet. Then they riveted the rack to the bottom of a cabinet shelf, installed the shelf, and there it was...a new storage closet.

The closet hangers were a new design also.

The idea for this diamond plate aluminum 6 Foot Storage Closet came from a snowmobiling customer who wanted a place to store his snowmobile suits / bibs, who was sick of hauling his snowmobiling gear into the house and who was also sick of the cheap, weak coat hangers he was using. You’ll notice this storage closet has heavy duty aluminum hangers that shouldn't break under the load of his heavy snowmobile gear.

Thanks.

I been thinking of building something like that for my cycle gear.
I was planning a set of cubbies down one side for helmets and a drawer about waist high in the middle of the cubbies for gloves/glasses/etc.

Is diamond plate cabinetry really all that popular for garages?
In all of the garages I have seen here on GJ, it seems pretty rare that they have any of this kind of cabinets in them.

Hi Steevo,

I'd say diamond plate cabinets are a niche.

We, Garage Pals, are a small team of 5 people, that builds diamond plate aluminum cabinets and also smooth aluminum products as well.

We like the diamond plate look, but it's not for everyone.

Best,

Hi Daveroy,

Sweet idea. That sounds like a handy storage unit.

We'd love to help you with it if you like...or maybe we can offer some ideas of things we've built in the past?

Just email me at [email protected].

Thanks!
