Anybody ever heard of these? I know someone who had these- he said they were basically 2 magnets- one on door and one on track that were hooked up to thermostat. When the door was closed the circuit was complete- when the door opened the circuit was broken.
Anybody heard of such a thing? Sounds like a great idea.

Never heard of it but I don't see why security system door position sensors could not be used. If necessary, a relay could be used to do whatever you want. I would not shut down a hot heater without letting its fan run out to use the heat.

That shouldn't be too tough to work out... I would put the relay on the control / thermostat side of the heater. That way, when the door is open it's like you turned off the heat at the thermostat (and the fan will still run until the unit cools down).

That's what I'm talking about- thanks. Can you give me an idea as to the switches and how to wire them. I'm not very good on the electrical side. If you could give me a quick lesson I'd appreciate it.

I would just get any magnetic reed switches from an electronics store. I think radioshack has them. Numerous other places on line. I used fairly large commercial door style switch/magnet because it didn't need close proximity and tolerances (powerful magnet). I actually have two garage doors so its just a series loop with the thermostat line. If either door goes up its magnet moves away from the switch and the switch goes open circuit. If there is a call for heat it is stopped and the burner goes out. Now the blower fan may run a bit longer because it is on a thermal switch on the heat exchanger. If your situation is you need to blower to stop right away you'll need something different.

I did it because we had a dog and it was let out through the garage many times a day but other family members often wouldn't close garage door upon the mutts return. I got tired of heating the planet....
