So i picked up a proto 3/4" ratchet today at a yard sale for five bucks.
The selector is rusted stuck I have never rebuilt a ratchet before but after opening it up it seems fairly straight forward. I have looked at ebay and grainger I just didnt know if a rebuild kit could be sourced any cheaper.

or

if i could source just some of the rebuild kit parts somewhere

If nothing is broke, soak the ratchet is ****** or hydrauilc fluid to loosen everything up. I found an 1/4" SK rusted tight, I soaked it for a while, got it apart and cleaned it up. It works great, no rebuild need.

I'm not sure what, if any 3/4" drive stuff HF sells, but I did repair a 1/2" Mac torque wrench (this wrench had the Proto style ratchet head) that Mac claimed to not make parts for any more by gutting a 1/2" HF torque wrench. It was the same exact design. Seems the Proto ratchet design is the defalt design to use. Tough, simple, and with long expired patents.;)

Might be worth a shot to check out what HF offers, although unless you can buy just the repair kit, it may be cheaper to go with Grainger.

post a picture. I used a proto challenger kit to fix an old sparta 3/4. Got it on ebay for $12 but if it is a pearhead then you will need to call proto and get a warranty kit I would guess.

Proto will send you a new rebuild kit free if you can free up and fix it up with the parts you have.

Last time I when to a local Proto dealer for a rebuild kit they didn't have one so I ended up leaving the store with a brand new shiny ratchet. I liked my old one but couldn't argue with fresh chrome. see if you can locate a local dealer online then go with Grainger if you can't find one.

I'd start by soaking that in a cup of transmission fluid or Evaporust. Shouldn't be a problem to bring that back to life.

that will be no problem, just soak it in solvent and it will be fine. If not call proto and they will send you a kit for free
They only send kits for free for 1/2" drive and under. The 3/4" stuff is not covered and proto told me on the phone to go to grainger and gave me the part number to buy the kit when I called them.

i need a kit for my proto, from what i saw on proto's website the newer ratchets are female drive, with an insert.
they dont say if the kit also fits older ratchets

Posting on this thread reminded me I have a non working proto 3/4 ratchet! I went to my local acme tool, they did not have a kit in stock, but they ordered me one and said they would put it when when it got here! Calling proto was a waste of time. They gave me a couple names of hydraulic supply stores for warranty. Calling those stores was a bigger waste of time. They didnt even stock any tools. Acme tools has always treated me good. I had this and some other stuff warrantied no problem.

I bought a 3/4 drive rebuild kit from Grainger last year, to repair a Proto (not Plumb) pebble grain handle model. The only kits they have are the black industrial finish. Most of what was wrong with mine was the selector, but I got a whole kit. They also make a selector kit but mine, while it was OK, did have a couple of buggered teeth so I did the whole kit.

The repair kit is J5649RK (might leave the J off the number). While Grainger shows the 5649RK as being female square drive, it IS NOT. I went to the store and they ordered it for me and when it came in we looked and it indeed was the MALE SQUARE DRIVE.
