Estate sale find

Just snagged this little guy at an estate sale this morning. It's a Union toolbox and looks like it was for a specific tool, but makes for a nice general toolbox. It's got a removable tray in it as well.

Not bad for $5!

Also found some interesting bits of stuff in it. Most of it looks pretty useful.

A refresh of a Craftsman I found at a swap meet. Paid too much ($10) but I wanted to try my hand at it. Some before and afters.

I even put a little glaze putty on some of the dents. Still plenty of others as can been seen in the "after" photos but I got the bad ones.

All original parts, latches and handle, but the badge is a spare-- it was hiding under the one seen in the first photos. Was that typical for Craftsman?

VERY nice job, and no that was a QC issue that you were able to take good advantage of!

Larryq, Very nice job.

WOW. It looks better than brand new!!

Thanks guys, appreciate the kind words. It was fun, though a lot of work.

Hard to sand out the nooks and crannies, and I kept getting pinholes in the glaze and having to sand and redo. (Bodywork is not my forte.)

The sheetmetal on this particular box is (nearly) as thin as anything China makes today, which made bumping out the dents nearly impossible. Like hitting a tape measure at times. I have a slightly larger Craftsman from the same era that I'll do eventually and the sheetmetal on it is noticeably stronger. The badge on that one is in sad shape too, but I don't think I'll find a brother beneath it...

Just a thought on badges:

There's nothing written in stone that says you can't take the original badge off, use it as a template to make another & then take that & have it anodized/engraved with whatever you desire...

Picked up this SK box a couple weeks ago. It needs some tweaking as one side is bent in. The tray is also missing, but I may have one that would fit.
I've been considering blasting and repainting it but am getting some flak to leave it as it is.

Here's my vintage Craftsman upper and lower boxes when I brought them home.
Friend bought them new in early 70's. Also a pic of the top box repainted.
How do I find their vintage? Can keys be made for the old locks?
Last picture is my 1st toolbox I got as a kid in the early 70's. Anyone know who manufactured it? Thanks.

I have found the build date stamped in the smaller drawers (top box) on my (same vintage) Craftsman box. Look at all the drawers you will find a build date.

I bought the same top box about 73, so your friend gave you the right time frame. they were made for a number of years from the late 60's and well into the 70's at least.

I have the same style of boxes with less drawers.
For the date codes on the roller bottom look just below the Craftsman emblem on the grey bottom rail. Should be something like 10 73
For the top box lift up your top lid, remove your tray and look on the left side. That's where mine is at.

What color and brand of paint did you use for the re-paint?

Nice! What'd you do to refinish? Strip and repaint?

Nope, no repainting here! It has taken me hours, but I used a swirl/haze removed (think automotive products), then carefully used a razor blade (had to be the right dullness) to scrape off little dots of foreign paint and other debris.

After that I touched up with very fine steel wool if needed (didn't need that much) and gave it a few coats of paint polish.

So far I only have the fronts of the drawers and a little around the top box. It will take quite a while to do the rest...but it will be worth it!

I've got this same box, and am turning it into a welding cart.

-Brad

Pics?

Mine (also the same box) is already a welding cart, when the weather breaks, I'll try to pull it out and get some pics of it.

It has a tilt up shelf on the left side, (now braced permanently up) with a small 3" lakeside vise (extra long throw though) and a lightweight grinder/wire wheel on that, and a hanging cabinet that my Lincoln fits on top of perfectly on the right.

The top has a 1/2" steel plate cut to fit, and that is tied to the vise so the magnetic ground of the welder rarely leaves th plate. I also have a copper wire and clamp on one of the vise bolts as a ground for when I need to weld something loose.
