I want to buy some impact sockets and S&K seem to be cheap compared to other USA made sockets. How do they compare to the imported impact sockets from Ingersoll Rand?

They seem to be priced about twice as high as the IR and 1/2 to 1/3 of Snap-On.

I know Advance Auto has them as well only available online. Haven't bought SK from them yet but I've always had good luck with their service and parts.

SK makes top notch tools. There is nothing a snap on impact socket will do that a SK won't. I own several sets and have never broken one. I am so personally torn. I want to support the new SK so much, but am kinda hand tooled out. I'm to the point, I have three healthly sets of tools and would never need another basic hand tool. I own a pretty hefty chunk of SK already and the few hand tools I could see buying, I would like to sneak a little more wright in.

Also check thetoolwarehouse.net

Yep, if you're buying more, prices are cheaper even with shipping, and customer service is superb. One of the few "discount stores" that actually bothers to answer the phone, and doesn't act like you're bothering them when you want help.

Though tooltopia is my typical source for sk, I've recently been buying it from advance auto. I was using a coupon code to get $50 off of each $150 purchase. It was still working as recently as maybe last October...

I have yet to use an Ideal inc. s-k tool. I grew up using these tools and always loved them, though I am leary to buy anything from Ideal.

What does that mean? Is "Ideal" like their "Father" company? Did SK Tools go out of business and "Ideal" bought the name? (I'm only guessing - tried to find some info, but came up with nothing)

In your opinion, has the quality changed? I'm about to pull the trigger on some decent hand tools, and I have this older SK wrench (Can anyone tell me what era it's from? second from the bottom), and it looks like the chrome is all "pitted". Here, let me post a picture of it:

Are the newer SK wrenches better finished?

(sorry about the bad pics) I've been told the flare-nut Craftsman is made by SK, and the top Craftsman Professional is made by Armstrong, while that Harley Davidson at the bottom is supposedly made by Snap-On?

EDIT: Attempted MACRO pic:

Since I buy tools, well, almost everything except food used, I kind of like a tool that doesn't have a perfect finish. I think there's a funny, long 7/16 Proto in the garage that's my favorite of that size.

Isn't a perfect, smooth chrome finish more slippery, and therefore a bit less useful, but better looking when showing others?

To answer GS's question, SK went under, looked like for good. Ideal products bought the rights to SK. From my understanding new the SK is different from the old company. Ideal built a new factory wit new tooling. That said, the products are the same, even the the part numbers. New SK will honnor warranty on old products. The product line did get trimed up, but it was mostly the imported ratcheting wrenchs and stuff like that.

I just bought the 25mm through 32mm set to round out my metric wrench set and the 8 piece 3/8" drive extension set from thetoolwarehouse.net. I've bought a lot of stuff from them and had only good experiences.
