What a warm day today. Had to break out the rubber boots. +12 degrees Celcius. Worked up in my rood on adding the sub sheething blocking. I am about 1/10th done.

I also pulled up some more of the concrete forms. Only a little more to go there.

The boys worked on their work benches. 1-2 more weekends they might be done (they loose interest fast)

Hung up a few more things on the walls. That is about it. will post some pictures later.

Wow for as busy as I was when I type it up sure doesn't seem like much does it.

I have gotten a little more of the blocking completed in the roof.

Hopefully I can set up my delivery for the roof metal early next week.

Started working on my electrical permit and service upgrade paperwork.

Might have found 18 x 2 tube 4' florecent fixtures w/ bulbs for $200 will see if that comes together.

And I might have my first job lined up to help pay for this beast of a project. Just need to get a couple of things done and hope for a nice week...
timing belt on a later model Chrysler 300 we will see how that goes.

Talk later.

Just checking in and your still making me cold !

There is no cold today. + 20 Celcius today and currently +10. What a nice day and I never did anything on the shop.

Volunteered to take some air cadets on a tour at work and that took all day. It was lots of fun. Got home and the florecent lights panned out. Got 18 servicable units and a couple extra balasts for $200. I will get some pictures tomorrow. The price was right even if they are not new.

timing belt 300 it is a 3.5 motor. do the water pump also..cake walk ! nice easy job

That is good to hear. A nice easy, paying job to begin with sounds awesome. Hopefully I can get that going come next month.

Thanks for you coments Vernmotor.

You just like hanging out up there, don't ya? You might as well build a little observation deck up there so you have a place to drink your beers (or beverage of your choice)! :)

BTW - I have my logging chains hung just like that. Sure beats a bucket!

I do like the view. I don't think the deck is in the works though. Hanging the chains allows a person to quickly and easily find the one they want. I hate trying to find stuff.

For those of you have been following along getting the chills as I build it is over... I hope... <knock on wood>

The weather was again unseasonably warm +20 . The snow is almost gone but the humidity today has condensated on my concrete. The floor of the shop is soaked.

103_7401.jpg

You can kind of make out the moisture in the picture above. I also removed the top row of forming boards in front of the garage door and raked the gravel up to the entrance.

Here are a some pictures of the T-12 fixtures I got yesterday. They might not be the most efficient but the price was right.

103_7400.jpg

103_7399.jpg

and lastly some pictures showing how little snow we have left.

103_7397.jpg

The little pile of snow in the background of this picture was about 6-7 feet tall last weekend.

Let me tell you. This weather is wild. Again over 20 celcius and we are currently having our first thunder storm. This is March in Manitoba if anything we should be seeing our last blizzard. I am sure the shop is flooded as I still hove no roof per say.

I am thinking about starting a tread on electrical service. I am figuring I will need to upgrade to 400 amp service. The house has a 200 amp panel we are running electric forced air inside. Everyone at work says that I should be looking for 200 Amp for the shop. I am going to get some pictures of my service pole tomorrow but I would like to see some 400 amp farm service distribution panels.

I wonder how much that is going to set me back???

Nice to see a Manitoba build, looking good.

Don't have any farm service pictures but most 400 amp servies we install now for homes use a JS4 cabinet and provide two 200 amp feeds on the load side which saves you from buying a single 400 amp panel like in the past.

I live just north of Winnipeg.

So for an application like mine I would read this as I would install (or if I have to have it instaled) a JS4 Meter base then I would feed 2 x 200 amp outdoor fused disconnects from that. The buildings would be supplied from the disconnects?

I am about half an hour north of Winnipeg as well.

As far as a shop update I finished 1/2 of the blocking on the main portion of the shop last night.

Welcome back. Was the course a learning experience?

I should have my roofing this week, so everyone should start seeing some visual progress soon. I picked up some more 2x4's for blocking. 30 x 8' and 6 x 10' so I will be working on that again today.

I also intend to get some clean up done around the property. The piles of lumber are getting a litle much. I might get my little work bench moved from the "garage" into the shop.

Never got much done the last 2 days my oldest had a judo tourney yesterday so I helped with set up and teardown. It felt good to do some community service again.

So today I celabrate. 50,000 views of my thread and it was 8 months 2 days ago that I actually broke ground. It is hard to believe that all that time has gone by. To celabrate I decided to add a picture of ther shop as my avitar (probably long overdue)

I got some more blocking done today... almost 1/2 done the second side. Paid for over half of my roofing yesterday. And got some more OSB added under the eaves... only 2 more pieces to go.

Should get back out and do more work... 2.5 more days till framing inspection.

Talk later.

The weather here today *****!!!!

Rain, Snow, Wind... Just above freezing.

It is raining inside the shop which is putting a crimp on work. I hate water dripping into my eyes and running up my arms when working above my head. I am avoiding work at almost all costs, which ***** with inspector coming tomorrow.

Well no rain or snow today. It is just above freezing.

I rescheduled the inspector for Friday morning. Lots left to do before then.

Finished paying for my roofing and it is being delivered tomorrow morning.

Going running again tomorrow morning. I am getting ready for the RCAF run 1/2 Marathon at the end of May.

Should have a good update later today.

I got the bottom cord diagnal bracing installed on the main shop trusses... (Still have 4 nails to install once I move my saw horses)

Finished the north and west wall blocking @ 8'

Installed the last 2 pieces of OSB under the eaves on the north wall if the main shop.

Pre inspection to do list:

- install 8' blocking on south and east walls of main shop
- finish tightening wedge anchor bolts on walls
- screw partition walls to blocking
- start installing sub sheathing blocking on lean-to
- finish installing diagnal bracing on lean-to trusses.

I think that is it.

I cannot put into words the amount of respect I have for you for doing this. Truly, my hat goes off to you.

I've often contemplated simply biting the bullet and building my own barn instead of paying out to a contractor or local barn company to do it. The downside is that I'd like to have a 2nd floor living space and I'm not sure (beyond attic truss) what goes into supporting the weight load. Then I try and convince myself to build a smaller portion off the main building for a living area, but at the end of the day my heart wants it over the garage area. Anyway- just another mental argument for me, myself, & I.

Congratulations again. Hope the little guys get to spend some quality time out there with you.

Thank you for commenting.

I must say if you are tempted to do it yourself, go for it. Use the resources you have available:
- the internet
- your local lumber yard
- your local building inspector
- and a recomended building designer/ engineer
- your local library

Ask lots of questions. It is a huge undertaking but very rewarding... heck I am amazed at what has risen from the earth mostly by my own 2 hands. As far as a second floor living space you could use an attic truss or build an entire second story with a standard truss roof. There are a million different ways of doing a build to make the building your own.

Please let me know if you decide to take the plunge.

Are you gonna get it all done before your inspection?

Just finished what I knew had to be done

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pre inspection to do list:
- finish tightening wedge anchor bolts on walls(done)
- start installing sub sheathing blocking on lean-to (Will do after inspection and before installing roof metal on lean-to)
- finish installing diagnal bracing on lean-to trusses. (done)

now the waiting game begins... might do some sub blocking while I wait... or maybe not.

 Well I am pissed. I waited here all day to get my framing inspection. Called the planning office and was told the inspector had an emergency pop up and was at the far end of the jurisdiction and would not be able to make my "Scheduled Appointment".

What could necessitate an "Emergency Inspection"?

Why is my time of so little value that I am not even worthy of a phone call?

I don't get this and I am writing a letter to hopefully get to the bottom of it. What else can a guy do... %@$?ing bureaucracy.

Share your 'disappointment' with just the inspector for non-notification of a missed appointment; it might buy you an easy sign off.

Your hard work is evident and the shop is coming together nicely! Keep us posted.

Or not-if it turns out that the inspector had a life or death emergency situation, they might not take kindly to getting grilled. I'd probably want to know more about the inspector's excuse before dropping the hammer on someone who could decide to be extra picky on the inspection.

But I understand the frustration, especially when most of us have to take time away from work to meet inspectors or contractors. Very frustrating when they don't show or call.

I'm impressed that you've done all of this work without outside help, and also impressed with how nice it's turning out. Good luck with the inspection and the rest of the work.

So after my last post and a politically worded email to the planning commission, I recieved a phone call saying the inspector was coming but later.

He showed up at about 5:00.

So he had some concerns:
1) No Shingles
2) no man doors
3) no building wrap
... I thought it was a framing inspection??????
4) I need to nail or screw corner studs to blocking (I will get some pictures later)
5) not enough nails into headers in south wall
6) problems with the framing of the south wall...

Qoute from inspection report:

"South wall is a long "hinge" wall with only 2 continuous studs thru 30 ft of wall. Not ideal - but may work? SIPD will not be held liable if it fails - Should review with your designer. *If sheathed inside with OSB 7/16 ensuring the full 4x8 sheet bridges across the hinge then it should be sound."

stay tuned for more discussion.

I also got stuck on the roof today...
went up to start plotting out how much sheathing I have to remove for my ridge vent

I also took up my first piece of drip edge and as I was walking over to pit it in place the safety line knocked down the ladder. Had to wait for the wife to come home... sat there for 20 min, oh well I guess it wasn't my day.

103_7465.jpg

I think this picture pretty much shows how it would have looked while I was on the roof. The wind blew the ladder down once I came down.

here is the one piece of drip edge installed

103_7466.jpg

I have to cut 1.5" of sheathing off each side of the peak to install the ridge vent.

I will post pictures of the corrections that I have to make after supper.

All of the wall joints like pictured below require screws or nails as indicated by the red dots... I can't believe I forgot them.

103_7459-1.jpg

The ends of the headers on the south wall need more nails, 9 per

103_7463.jpg

and I need to re-enforce the king studs in between the headers as pictured here

103_7462.jpg

The inspector said he would be satisfied with the wall being sheathed with 7/16 OSB on the interior but I think I might try something more creative. Will render it in scetch-up and get some opinions. As I have said before this build is a learning/re-learning experience.

I never got a reason as to why he wasn't coming but from what I gather I think he got ******* in the office this morning. He did seem a little perterbed but was very professional. I really wish I had know that the framing inspection included roofing, man doors and building wrap. I was a little embarassed / confused when those were the first words out of his mouth :headscrat

And honestly there was no hammer dropping but I was quite upset... (now I know that was for no good reason). The email I sent was as follows:

"To whom it may concern,

I am writing this e-mail to express my disappointment with SIPD regarding my scheduled appointment on 30 March 2012.

I have taken time off work to ensure that I was going to be present during the framing inspection of my shop. It is now 2:40 pm on the day my appointment was scheduled. I called to enquire as to when I could expect the inspector to be arriving and was told that he would be unable to make the appointment today as some emergency had come up and he was at the other end of the jurisdiction.

My concerns are as follows:

- What type of inspection emergency is there?
- Why is my time considered so unimportant that no effort was made to contact me to reschedule?

I do believe that the work your office does is important and I understand that you have manpower issues but I do believe that a scheduled inspection should have priority over a last minute call in.

I first scheduled the inspection for this week about one month ago. When I realized that I would be unable to have everything completed by my originally scheduled appointment on Wed I immediately contacted your office to reschedule. I did this because I realize that SIPD is very busy and would hate to be responsible for wasting the inspectors valuable time. I was informed there was only one other appointment scheduled on Friday and my inspection would be the only other one booked.

I would very much appreciate a response as to why all of this occurred. Bottom line is customer service should have called and informed any customer with a scheduled appointment for today that wasn't going to be seen. Why wasn't this done?"

I tried to maintain a professional tone even though I was pretty upset.
